I think this is possibly the only forum on the internet where the idea of a thread entirely dedicated to discussing two female YouTubers doesn’t fill me with dread so there’s that.

If only Josh on After Work Reactions was a pair of women…he would get a thread too

eh, I watch both. And I love both channels’ RD reactions. I like Cyborcat’s recaps too.

You did make a thread about those, and people discussed them?: https://www.ganymede.tv/forums/topic/people-who-react-to-rd-on-youtube/

Josh AWR – “I’m here, can’t you see me, can’t you feel me?”
    G&T – “we’re getting some buffeting!”

The G Gals seem to be a bigger deal than any previous RD “reacter” though. Maybe because they’re already known in the sci fi world (they mostly did Dr Who and mainly do sci fi in general, AWR does comedy) or just are more emotionally demonstrative and entertaining?

There’s also two of them. I can enjoy single-person reaction videos fine but it’s fun to hear thoughts and ideas bounced around off two people and some of the pre-show nattering.

Another American reactor I like is King Boomer, he’s done lots of classic British comedy and I think he’s reacted to a clip or two from RD but it’d be fun if he did the whole show.

So, uh, has anybody watched any of GGs’ other series? Worth it or does the novelty drop when they’re not doing RD?

Either the novelty of them covering the show you like the most, the novelty of them covering a show which is the most niche for a modern US audience, or the novelty of the of them covering an audience sitcom.

I think the thing that hooked me onto watching the Gallifrey Gals reaction series more so than any others was just how little they knew about the show beforehand. It’s rare to find people that are into sci-fi (especially British sci-fi) who aren’t at least slightly aware of Red Dwarf, but they didn’t even know it was a sitcom before they watched The End. Then just as they were getting used to the idea of watching a workplace sitcom in space, they were completely blown away by the crew being wiped out. It’s the purity of the reactions, for me, it gives me a new perspective on a show that I couldn’t be more familiar with, which is a rare thing indeed.

I’d never gotten anything out of reaction videos til I watched the GGs getting Dwarfed but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. It’s great to see newbies’ unalloyed joy at the best bits of your favourite show and I’ve loved hearing their predictions, some bang on and some brimming over with wrongability. Kinda dreading Series VIII for them though.

I can imagine them being flummoxed initially by the shift in tone, before becoming incensed by the Rimmer/Kochanski stuff in ‘Cassandra’ and the entirety of ‘Krytie TV’. With good cause. I’ll be impressed if they don’t give up before the end.

I mean you never know. When I posted my most recent anti-Series VIII meme to Escape Pod, I got a whopping 7 commenters turning up to defend it (one of whom even called me a prick, essentially). Clearly there’s a consistent faction of Series VIII Likers in the fanbase. Maybe by chance the Gals will be among them.

Obviously it would cooler if they validated our extremely correct opinions, but they have spent most of their Series VII reactions being confused about why so many people told them it would be a downturn (with Kat even saying she’s been preferring it to Series VI), so there are no guarantees.

I’ve found similar joy sharing the show with my kids. Because they don’t always enjoy the same parts of it that I enjoy, or in the same way.

For example, my daughter (especially when she was younger) loved the Cat more than anyone else in the show, because he’s so cartoonishly funny and stupid and likeable and endearing. And my son adores Backwards and will ask for it over every other episode whenever we watch, because all the backwards jokes are still fresh and funny and inventive for him, and spark off his imagination.

I dunno, I think so far they’ve been very even-handed about the few things that arguably haven’t aged well, but VIII is a totally different beast and some of it will just be beyond the pale for them, completely understandably.

As for VII, I was pleased that they loved the first two episodes but they’ve seemed less enthusiastic about the rest of it.

They’re kind of dimly aware of it as a sort of proto-Simpsons. But I think they get the joke from the context of the discussion more than anything.

there’s a guy in After Work’s comments who fiercely defends S8 as universally loved at the time (by everyone except miserable PC whiners) and only recently having it’s reputation retroactively besmirched by the “woke”.

Maybe I’m the only one, but there were definitely a lot of moments to VIII that were funny the first time or two but faded quickly – well more than previous series did. (Also more elements that were shit instantly.) The point to that just being that they could enjoy it more than we expect just because the weaker jokes haven’t worn off yet – even though I do still expect to see them uncomfortable with the poorly-aged/always-poor elements.

I definitely liked 8 more at the time of airing, though I was only about 16. I could always tell the vibe was different though.

GG’s comments threads are also full of 8 apologists, TBF. I’ve seen more than one claim it’s the best series!

VIII was clearly crap on arrival, but I do think it’s true that any glimmers of positivity within it fail to hold up to repeat viewing and so your first watch is likely to be the point where you get the most out of it. I always suspect that a lot of the defenders you see online are people who haven’t actually watched any of it since broadcast and so are trading off rose tinted memories of the best way to experience that show – once.

Which is also where something like the Gal’s reaction series is always going to be a tough way for them to get a rounded experience of the quality of a show overall. Watching every series back to back with no gaps and having no opportunities to revisit episodes and appreciate those that stand up to repeated viewing and those that are diminished by it is always going to result in a somewhat skewed appreciation of which episodes are the best. Something like a Waiting for God is easy to allow to slide past you in the rush of other episodes as “oh that was the episode with the Cat priest and not a lot else going on right? Yeah it was fine I guess” where as a more high concept or “bombastic” episode might make more of an initial impression and become inflated in your mind following that first watch – I can easily understand why they really enjoyed Tikka for example, it’s a big idea that’s executed in a way that the show hasn’t attempted before.

I used to prefer VIII over VII generally for its superficial “return to form” (a claim that doesn’t stand up to analysis), but they don’t seem to have that complaint about VII’s “drama” development and even seemed a bit disappointed by VI’s stock gags aspect already.

Jamie (young guy who reacted to all of RD and then deleted his channel) disliked S7 and kept saying he was enjoying 8 a lot more. He hated the loss of Rimmer I think, and he liked the faster paced humour.

Honestly part of the issue with VIII is that it ends weaker than it starts (well, Only the Good… is better than Pete, but…). At least VII improves as it goes along.

Epideme is brills but Nanarchy is not as good as Tikka to Ride. Let’s call it even.
