If he writes a new Red Dwarf novel or even series of novels I almost guarantee you the show will have to be irreversibly dead first. Same for releasing a script book for the unmade film. Nothing’s stopping Rob Grant, though. I’d almost rather he do more novels than reboot the show or whatever the hell he’s up to behind the scenes. I’d almost rather he do more novels than reboot the show or whatever the hell he’s up to behind the scenes. I think the truth is we don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes and what the current barriers to new Dwarf (in whatever form) might be, especially given the ongoing legal mess. Rob seems enthusiastic for more, and I wouldn’t bet against another novel eventually, but currently his buttski-oriented content plans seem somewhat constipated. Last Human reads like contractual obligation, so I think that’s more why we haven’t seen anything from Doug. I would agree that we might see another novel from him if the TV show is pronounced dead, but more so because he just wants to continue Red Dwarf rather than he wants to make sure his unused episode ideas reach an audience. It’s not like books are the easy alternative though, it was hard enough getting the third one out of them and there didn’t seem to be any more enthusiasm once they were out of that contract.
