No, the fact that a spin-off to Britains most popular show gets beat by a show that hasn’t been on for 10 years and was denied a new series by the BBC makes me happy.
I actually didn’t mind Torchwood Series 1 (though orgasm alien was just cringe worthy), I think it got much better with Series 2 though, I’m going off topic.

Now, the article reads a bit like they’re combining all airings of the episodes together; if that isn’t the case, and they mean to refer solely to the first airing, the first three places are now all BtE…

Besides, the correct comeback is supposed to be “Back to Earth wasn’t meant to make you laugh. Red Dwarf is a comedy drama now”. In which case, saying that a gag-heavy (if slightly wearisome) sitcom like “Not Going Out” is funnier than it, shouldn’t annoy anyone.

But I guess that’s the way fandom works. Say something unpopular is shit, no one cares. Say something popular is shit, everyone get annoyed.

Of course my “negative points” are right. I’m hardly going to say they’re wrong, am I? It’s called an opinion. It really shouldn’t rankle so much. Would you get offended if I said:

Thing is, I didn’t stop watching 15 years ago. Far from it. I watched Thanks for the Memory last night. Laughed like a drain. Read the first two novels after BTE aired. Loved them just as much as ever.

Let’s rewind. Ben said he bought two DVDs; Back to Earth and Not Going Out. Seb said that Not Going Out “was utter gash”. I replied that it was funnier than the other thing Ben bought.

The really funny thing is that before BTE even aired, I had a good idea that there would be people who would like it simply BECAUSE IT’S RED DWARF SO IT MUST BE GOOD. You didn?t disappoint either.

Although I’m puzzled as to why you’re still watching the programme since you probably still hold the opinion that it’s aimed for people aged 15 and under.

Nobody cares who does and doesn’t like Back To Earth. But when you call something that a lot of people like shit out of nowhere, when there’s no place in the conversation thus far for such a remark to go, and as such it totally derails a thread, and you do it just to annoy people and get a reaction, then it borders on trolling.

If you went around saying “Series VIII was shit” in a load of threads that aren’t about Series VIII, it would be equally fucking tedious.

A comedy drama is meant to make you laugh, hence the comedy half of the description. A comedy drama can make somebody laugh more than a gag-heavy sitcom based on the quality of the humour (and of course the taste of the viewer).

I’ve laughed more at Life On Mars than I ever have at Gimme Gimme Gimme, as one example from the top of my head. Jonathan Creek has given me bigger laughs than My Family ever has. And Red Dwarf: Back To Earth was a hell of a lot funnier, to me, than The Green Green Grass.

And Not Going Out.

This thread is making me understand just how tedious my life is. I really should be devouring series sets of Not Going Out, Gimme Gimme Gimme and The Green Green Grass and comparing them with both BtE and VIII, taking extensive notes along the way. The fact that I’m not doing that right this second suggests my material existence is a huge fucking wasteful joke – a sick one at that.

There’s a pack of honey & lemon Strepsils (36 lozenges) sitting on my shelf in front of me and I now have the urge to ram let’s say, for argument’s sake, 11 (because odd numbers are funny and even numbers aren’t, depending on which sitcom commentary you listen to) of them into the slot of my Darth Maul electronic moneybox, setting all three of the fucking things off (Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon) in the process and probably waking my other half up resulting in a bollocking because she’ll see the redtube tab I forgot to close in this mother fucking stupour brought on by attempting to read Pete’s posts. Just listen to the new Torchwood audio or read a book or something.

“It could have been a number of things to explain away and restore the fourth wall, I felt because it was kind of a 21st anniversary show there was a sort of coolness in sort of in, in using one of our most loved shows and revisiting it. But as explained above, this thread is ABOUT BTE. I didn’t bring up Not Going Out and I wasn’t the one who labelled it “gash”.

If Ben had bought a My Family DVD along with Not Going Out, then calling Not Going Out “funnier than Back to Earth” would have come out of nowhere, fair enough. But he didn’t buy a My Family DVD, he bought Back to Earth so comparing the two seems completely justified and on-topic.

I’m not going to get into the whole “BTE isn’t a comedy drama, actually” thing again. What I will say is, what its meant to and what it does are two different things.
