I’ve always thought that Rimmer and Lister would have made a great comedy double act, a bit like The Two Ronnies or The Chuckle Brothers, with Rimmer being the more dominant but less intelligent of the two and Lister being the fall guy. Would you watch a series with just the two of them, and if so, how would you want it to be?

    LISTER AND RIMMER (DECEASED)

Craig Charles and Chris Barrie are badly miscast in an unsatisfying supernatural detective series remake.

    ²ME²YOU

Craig Charles and Chris Barrie present a children’s game show set on a desert island even though that has nothing to do with their established double act, but at least the theme song’s more appropriate now.

THE SMELL OF LISTER AND RIMMER

Wacky and surreal sketch show involving the lowly JMC technicians.

As I love the Rimmer / Lister dynamic of the first two series, I’d say yes.

    LISTER AND RIMMER UNPLANNED

New name for Red Dwarf Unplugged after half the cast drop out.

I think the real question is whether we’d watch a solo Cat spinoff. I reckon we can get another thread out of that.

Would you watch an episode where there are no characters and it’s just the sets?

Yes. I watch the raw FX reels on YouTube for soothing background visuals when listening to audiobooks/podcasts sometimes, so an atmospheric tour of the ship would be nice.

I was worried that someone would say yes to that.

And you wouldn’t get a tour of the ship, per se. You’d get shots of the bunkroom for 4 minutes. Shots of the science room for 3 minutes. 1 minute of a camera going down a corridor. Shots of interior starbug mixed in with model shots for 2 minutes. 3 minutes of location shots. 4 minutes guest set one. 1 minute location shots. 2 minutes guest set two. 1 minute guest set one from a different angle to make it look like a guest set three. 2 minutes guest corridor. 4 minutes guest set one. Model shot. 1 minute bunk room.

So it would be as if they shot a proper episode of Red Dwarf but forgot to put actors in it?

What if they also forgot to put the sets in it. And the model footage. And the theme tune.

Would you watch a blank screen for half an hour if the words ‘Red Dwarf’ appeared in front of it?

(While answering this question, bear in mind that you have sat through all of series VIII, so the question isn’t as silly as it sounds.)

I would watch a series with just Rimmer and Lister but only if it’s nothing like the Chuckle Brothers or the Two Ronnies. Those aren’t terrible shows, but there are tonally far away from what I want Dwarf to be.
It would have to be akin to the Derek & Clive album , only with every swear word replaced. “This Goit Came Up to Me”, “You Smegging Goit” and of course the classic “Winkie Smeggy Woo.” It can be called Dave & Arnold (Smegged).

I am not a professional comedy writer.

    WHY THE HELL NOT!??!

I avoided making the obligatory Series VIII reference because, even though they are tonally equal, Chuckle Vision is the far superior show at that point.

There’s really not any similarity between Lister and Rimmer’s pranks in VIII and the Chuckle Brothers. It just seems like a lazy and inaccurate diss.

Of course I would, I do ship them after all

I think it just means broad slapstick that feels better aimed at children than adults.

my main memory of VIII is shopping with my Dad in Sainsburys and wanting him to rush home because Back in the Red part 1 was going to be on. Then being excited at Lister being put in the bunkroom, and the rat bum scene. After that, there’s so much going on that my memory becomes fuzzy.

i agree with warbofrog about nofro’s suggestion of just the sets. the article about the wall with the three pipes really made it feel like a character to me. the thread about the bbc2 ident reminded me that adam curtis films were the other thing that blew my mind on that channel growing up. he uses all the off cuts from the bbc film archives which include a lot of empty interiors, combining them with hypnotic paranoid monologues and music. snacky and the vending machines are kind of sets and people at the same time.

the only problem i can see with just having sets is if conditions are too sandy
