I think the major factor is having a savvy RD fan in charge of the DVD production. You don’t really get that with other releases…

I’d always thought a tribute to why the DVDs are so fantastic would be great as well.

I could jabber on and on and on about how awesome the DVDs are and how well stocked they are, how much effort and love went into finding all the archive material that ended up in the documentaries and the photo galleries and the promo stuff. How they bothered to go above and SO far beyond the call of duty when it came to the extras on the DVDs, like the music cues and the such like. I remember getting those first DVDs and the “Launching Red Dwarf” with the cast and crews’ MASSIVE FACES talking about the early days of Red Dwarf, and watching it over and over again because it was people on Dwarf talking about Dwarf about stuff I never knew before.

To me there are some very different ideas and joke types in that episode. It’s brilliant.

Eddie: ‘What are these black bits all over the place?”
Richie: “it’s just a couple of greenfly for heaven’s sake, they’re dead now, they’ve been under the grill for ages… really! i watched them pop…”

Eddie: “Hey, I’ve just had a FANTASTIC idea…” *downs his pint*
    Richie: “………….Well?”
    Eddie: “………….What?”
Richie: “What was the fantastic idea?”
    Eddie: “To drink *that*”

Eddie: “Well, I shall leave you ‘Mabel’, but I feel it right to warn you that if your nephew reads anymore “art magazines”. you very well may go blind.”

    Fucking awesome

I can’t possibly rate them, other than noticing that Contest for me has some fucking cracking performances, but the ones that stand out for me are the kind of setting pieces like ‘Hole’ and ‘S Out where they can interact with different things other than the flat.

Hmm, you’ve got to remember this is the FIRST TIME they’ve seen these. Before you formed your opinions on what is the best episodes you’ve had maybe 10 years or more to mull it over and think about it. I certainly didn’t have a defining opinion on first viewings, it was the subsequent years that followed that shaped my true opinions.

I know it’s massively trivial but all these monitors on arms and wall mounts just aren’t doing it for me, especially as very little has been done to dress them up.
I find myself very much missing the more industrial look of the old CRTs built solidly into the walls and consoles, just felt a bit more mining ship-ey to me…

It bothered me a bit as if it was like they were trying to hard to make the sets look high-tech, but my rationale for it is since Holly is broken, they had to move a lot of the diagnostic stuff of the ship up to the sleeping quarters and cockpit in order to keep a closer eye on things, and because Lister couldn’t be arsed to walk to the drive room to sort something. If anything though it gives me something to try and recreate for wallpaper/video type shenanigans :)

How does that work? Would that mean then that on a DVD a commentary could contain the phrase “Norman Lovett is a cunthorn’ and it would still be passed as a U if the show itself was U rated?

That’s what I’m thinking. it seems the BBFC have a hard time keeping track of all the extra stuff that appears on discs now, and some stuff could theoretically slip through the net.

in reply to: More extras passed at the BBFC #201649

Andrew has tweeted me and I thought it was relephant to the conversation:

Andrew said “Not saying it relates to RDX one way or the other, but the BBFC don’t, to my knowledge, rate commentaries.”

“(I know it’s happened with deleted scenes, but that’s a delivery anomaly, not the norm.) Read zero into this. Just a factoid.”

So, if there are any commentaries they wouldn’t be mentioned on BBFC anyways.

Is there anything to say that all the extras have been passed?

I’m assuming that the commentaries would have needed to have been cleared before now though, right? I don’t think it would make a ton of sense to keep something like that under wraps. Has anyone asked Bobbyllew or Danny whether they’ve done any commentaries. I’m sure they would have made a thing about it had they done some, surely.

I’m just hoping that we get a lovely full DVD set with all the trimmings that, not us, but that Red Dwarf, deserves.

Is it me, or does this release seem really rushed in order to get it out after transmission? How long was it after BTE did we get the DVD for comparison?

We’re getting a massive documentary, so i’m not complaining, but I can’t help feeling a little disappointed after all the awesome DVDs we’ve had in the past.

Weirdly enough, i’m hoping that Dave re-release this as a 2-Disc down the line. I’d be more than happy to buy a fuller special edition set later on with commentaries and cues and stuff.

What really annoys me is that this ship’s purpose has a massive tangential shift in VIII. It’s not a mining ship anymore, more a ship with a secret FUCKING MASSIVE PENAL COLONY within it. which has another 1/4 number of people previously thought. (if you count Justice’s figure of 1,167, 400 PERCENT more if you count ‘The End’!)

I dunno, it just changed the feel of the show just too much for me.

The problem is, doing commentaries on a show that’s FRESHLY aired, is kinda difficult to do. it takes a while for you to get your opinions together (well, it does me, anyways) and to collate the information about episodes, things you notice in set, dialogue points and all that. So i reckon at least 4 – 6 months between airing and commentary is fine if not still too quick!

I thought it would have been really self indulgent for me to do this, but then I realised I’m not responsible for all the ideas of the banners.
Some are going to be more relevant to certain eras and will go ‘out of date’ like the BTE paparazzi shot stuff, that kind of thing. SO it’d be nice to have somwehere for them to go, and it’s an interesting timeline of G&T’s past.

Because the site’s being redesigned, the banner style is going to shift slightly too, and because i’m an idiot I didn’t make the banners in any larger resolution than what we have, so I’d have to make them all again in theory. So the style and possibly the logo may change, still working on that.

In short the 55 (61) Banner project will happen, eventually

This is what I thought about. I try to avoid the last 2 live shows.

I saw the movie in the cinema. I quite like it, but the pacing is horribly slow. Some awesome set pieces though…

Correct me if i’m wrong, but you only ever see the ‘right’ side of the ‘clenched-fist’ ship (if the ship is heading away from you), yeah?

We only ever saw the left side in BTE when the ship was heading ‘home’.
