I don’t want red dwarf V again since that could never happen but I want the show to return to be as good as red dwarf V

Series 10 felt like it had a couple of writing pains in each episode as well as a coupl of not great decisions on doubts part

for me the problem wasn’t that there was no audience it was that the material just wasn’t very good and i know if you asked the cast they would say the problem was that there was no audience but reallt would that really have made the material more funny? or should it really depend on the cast to make something more funny if the material just isn’t very good?

and when people say the cast looked tired… was it that or was it the material was just kinda dull?

i actually remember in SFX magazine doug said he felt it was the best story they had ever done… but lets be honest it doesn’t top back to reality

I assume Doug wants to direct the show but I’d argue he shouldn’t try and do everything for the same of the show

What would Improve the show for me

#1. no more surprise reveals about the characters or their pasts

We know lister is his own dad, we know rimmers dad isn’t his real dad, we know his brother howard is basically just the same as rimmer, we have some backstory with kryten and Professor Mamet in beyond a joke.

for me i’d rather just have good stand alone stories that put the characters into interesting situations, i don’t want need anymore dissected backstories

#2. don’t turn computers and dispensing machines into guest characters

the way it was done in series 1 was pretty subtle while with 10 it was like doug struggled to write for 4 characters so used it as a way to add more personalities but for me it took away from the atmosphere of lonelyness

i personally think they need to be fleshed out and be kept consistent because the Kryten and Cat Entangled logic seemed to be all over the place and i really couldn’t follow it, first it was like they made coincidence happen and then when the BEGGS choked it wasn’t that cat and kryten made it happen it was just that they were aware it was gonna happen… or something like that and that may have been done because doug didn’t want the cat and kryten to be responsible for the deaths but come on be consistent with it

also them all choking at once without an excuse is kinda over the top and silly

>#4. Bring On the Bunkroom

i’d rather have bunkroom scenes that fit naturally rather then just add more bunkroom scenes because they never feel natural and often the quality of the material doesn’t hold up

personally id take small doses of good quality then large doses of mixed quality

>#7. The Universe Needs To Be A Little More Serious

i agree that its always nice to have a good villain in this show, they don’t need to be funny or goofy as it was never an issue for the early shows

Really there is a difference between rob saying stuff about series 7 and 8 considering he was co-creator and red dwarf was his baby also but for doug to say stuff about robs solo work is abit harsh or even childish

the only thing i can remember rob ever saying is series 7 was like watching an ex wifes honeymoon video and that there was nothing in it for him and that he had to be drunk in order to like it

but of course doug is the main writer of red dwarf and fans are loyal to the show and everyone involved so everyone doesn’t wanna see doug in a bad light, which is understandable

if you nikpik about series 8 and logic problems then you could be here all day as i dont think doug was taking the show seriously at that point.

series 8 didnt feel like red dwarf it felt more like it could of been set in a school with rimmer and lister being the pranksters, the captain being the headmaster and cat,kryten and kochanski being the side friends that sometimes appeared.

i really do think doug was going through some ego trip at that point during the remastered series and series 8.

its just over 25 min episode and u gotta get the coronation street stuff out the way which could last 10 min from what i can tell by the behind the scenes clips, and then u got the chase scene with the gunman, and then u got that stuff with them walking on the road away from carbug, and shots of them in what looks like a bedroom

id be suprised if u have anough time to include a hell lot about kochanski along with the other plotholes that need resolving
