Do you just mean your faith in his being part of any future series of Dwarf, or have you not liked his work on other projects?

    > Thinking about it, this is starting to make me sound like a sociopath.

Yes, a more thoughtful and gentler breed of sociopath.

It would actually be a very sensible way for me to shift my perspective, at least on repeated viewings of the first two series. For series three, it being brand new and my having not read the novel, I need to immerse myself in the world and the emotions first. But certainly it would help me feel more sympathy for Jaime, and I suspect that’s what the writers are going for now.

Being mostly clueless about how TV programmes get made (learned everything I know from the bts doccos and what I’ve read on this site), I’d love for Pete or whoever else has criticized Doug’s direction to give a specific example, and how better direction would have improved it. Thanks!

The crew travel to a city called Birmingham in the year 2013. They land in a small hotel room with 17 people spouting bollocks and recording themselves. Kryten whips out his sci-scan and hilarity ensues.

About Jaime, I work with kids every day. My list of forgivable offenses is pretty long, but pushing a kid out a tower window is not on it.

I’m happy he stuck up for Brienne, though.

Ian – I was able to keep a straight face right up until the Dragonstone towers grew up during the sexy sax solo. Then I had to snigger.

Ann, Fluxx is a card game and there are multiple versions of it including Monty Python Fluxx (though I believe the BTTF one is just called BTTF: the Card Game, but it’s the same game as Fluxx). We played it at Gally and Karl was just asking why we didn’t play it at DJ. Don’t worry hon, you didn’t miss anything. :)

I’ve seen the Game of Thrones card game and almost bought it, but… only two players? Come on.

I watched “Bear and the Maiden Fair” having missed the previous one. Luckily for me, it was almost entirely character development rather than action. The slower pace was just what I needed. I love the character of Osha and was especially grateful for more of her back story.

And I didn’t lose a single plot line, thank you very much Renata.

Hi Ben, you would have been in your element. DJ had the same energy buzz as Gallifrey, the same closeness both among the fan community and to the actors, and more music. (Somebody at Gallifrey came up to us during our Monty Python Fluxx game and said there was a piano, but I never saw it!) Also it was more intimate. Close to 400 people, but plenty of time to make a few lifelong friends, especially if you’re willing to forgo sleep.

Gallifrey’s clearest advantage, that I could see, is the transgender community was much better represented there.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat as your friend because some of my friends have read all the books and I’m 2/3 through the first one. It’s weird that there are two subsets of fans who experience the show in completely different ways, and it sometimes makes discussion frustrating on my end. Also, next week I will have to start taking notes because I’m starting to lose track of all the plotlines.

Last night they sniggered when I said, “I guess there won’t be a Mormont reunion like I was hoping.”

    > The only thing I’m worried that they might’ve fucked up is the reveal of Barristan Selmy at the end – there was absolutely no room to adequately explain exactly *why* he sought out Dany, because in the show it was only ever very briefly mentioned in season 1 that he used to serve the Targaryens before Robert’s rebellion.

Jaime Lannister also mentioned in season two that he squired for Selmy, confusing things even more.

I think for those who don’t remember who he is, it still works as a reveal to Dany that someone on Westeros does indeed remember the Targaryens and wants them back in power, which answers one of her fears.

Hmm. I wasn’t really expecting much of a resolution there because the ending felt too huge and awesome to be the type of cliffhanger that gets resolved in the next episode. If the dead guy on the horse had actually attacked Sam, then yes. But it just felt more like, check out the sheer expanse and grotesqueness of this army of zombies.

I feel your pain, I really do, but if George Martin kills a character, I can’t really fault Weiss/Benioff for sticking to the books and killing him too. However, I read an article in which they said they may decide to kill off someone that Martin didn’t, because it serves the arc of the show. If they do this, and especially if it is a major character, it had better be masterfully written or they will make a lot of people very angry.

I’m hooked. I had too little time to read through the books first, but I binged on the first two series and DVD extras for the past 10 days, and am now indulging in the first book.

My only mild regret about watching the show first is I get jolted out of the world of the book every time I’m reminded that the kids are younger in the books than in the show, especially Robb. The other differences don’t have that effect on me. But it’s worth it to be able to enjoy season three with you all.

And still going strong. Many happy returns!

I already shared how I was introduced to Red Dwarf, but if you’ll allow a bit of self-indulgence, here is how I was re-introduced to a decade later (and introduced to G&T):

    1. I was chronically depressed after failing to earn a degree at a music conservatory. All my friends were musicians and suddenly I couldn’t bring myself to spend time with them. Finding that I cheered up listening to Bonzo Dog Band and Rutles albums I had enjoyed as a kid, I looked for and found a friendly group of people online in a Neil Innes forum.

    2. Here I read that some of the Bonzos reunited and toured around England. I wished I could have seen this. Some months later, I looked for reviews of these concerts and found a particularly good one written by a Tanya Jones.

    3. Meanwhile, realizing I felt much better revisiting things from childhood, I went YouTube trawling for Red Dwarf episodes. Why had I given up on my favorite show? I think because I hadn’t liked Series VIII very much, because the movie was dead in the water, and because in the conservatory there was no time for TV. But now I thought I would watch some of VIII again to see if it improved with age.

    4. What I found instead: srmcd1’s music videos. These I watched over and over again, because they reminded me of how in love with the show I’d been. Then, one day, something called “Back to Earth” came up in my suggested videos. Oh my God, when was this made and how did I miss it?

    5. I went to TOS and got caught up. Then I peeked into the TOS forum… and quickly ran away. There was major vitriol being flung in every direction.

    6. It must have been from TOS that I first linked to “Ganymede and Titan: Ain’t no place in the whole of cyberspace.” Hey, that’s clever. Hey, these guys write *very* well. Hey, is that the same Tanya Jones who wrote that awesome concert review? That’s a weird coincidence; I think I know what I’ll call myself…

    7. I joined up… and got lambasted (not really, but it felt that way). I lurked for a while, figured out that we do that to everybody around here, developed a backbone, and rejoined.

    8. (Epilogue) Over the next two years, I went back to college, finished off my credits, reconnected with my friends and made new ones. Some of them like Red Dwarf, but not well enough to join up here. It’s their loss.

So, Happy birthday, Red Dwarf… and thank you for leading me to my people.

Marooned: Lister and Rimmer wait for Lister to die. They can’t hide how happy they are.

I can’t believe the Introcasters are already on Terrorform! I haven’t listened in a while due to a sudden lack of free time.

Oops, I meant to delete that myself. Embarrassing.

    >Keep them Dwarf-centric if you can please.

So, at some point you’ll be sharing your “Chilly Down” chords with us, right?

Thanks Jo! I’m going to introduce myself to this show as a reward for finally mastering the ‘pre’ tag.

Here are chords for the fugal theme from “Kryten.” This one sounds good if the right hand plays the chords while the left hand plays the bass notes in the rhythm of four crotchets per bar.

That’s another problem – I’m on a public computer and I’ve got Word and Notepad, but not TextEdit or TextPad. I’ll just tinker with it until the spacing is halfway decent.

Also, being contrapuntal music, its form is not periodic or “four-square” the way, say, the theme from “Androids” is. That makes it a bit trickier to line up the barlines.

And it is back on network TV, not just Hulu! Makes it much easier for me to watch, not having internet at home. Yet another show that G&T turned me on to.

Point of clarification: when I wrote, “a black Sherlock Holmes or Poirot,” I meant, “a brilliant, freelance detective-for-hire, like those two I mentioned, who is black.” I was trying to use… synecdoche? Metonymy? Something like that. :)

I finally got to watch it last night. Danny was very good, though he may have been gritting his teeth (as I was) that even in Paradise, once again we have a show where the white dude is “chief.” The UK and US are both mad for detective dramas, yet where are all the black DCIs? Or has there ever been a black Sherlock Holmes or Poirot?

Anyhow, must send a few extra shekels to KCET for airing it. Maybe with a note saying, “That John-Jules guy is talented. Could you pick up more shows with him?”

Those are the very tags I used. I’m at a different computer now, so…

    This

    is only

    a

    test.

It only did one line break between each line, although I put in three. And it didn’t transfer the extra space between “is” and “only” and before “test.”

Maybe I should use both pre and code tags.

    Wide open spaces.
