True. But I don’t buy it from Rimmer’s POV.
Throughout the ep his reasons for wanting to be on the Enlightenment are all about career and status. Not once do you get the impression that he’s doing it to be with her. Even when he thinks he’s failed, it’s all about him not achieving his dream, it’s not about losing her. That’s why I don’t buy it.

Holoship always left me really cold, I just don?t feel it, and that?s plain sad. I kind of know its good, and can see why I should like it, but it just doesn?t move me on any level.

I really like Holoship.
But not for the whole Rimmer/Nirvanah aspect – the “romantic” aspect is irrelevant. That’s not even what the ep is about.

I like it because it explores Rimmer’s character in much the same way it did in Marooned: his response to somone else’s self-sacrifice – or perceived self-sacrifice in Marooned.
In essence it’s the same story, except for Rimmer the stakes are bigger in Holoship as in the end he’s losing far more.
In that way it’s up there with Thanks.

Lurve don’t enter into it. I never bought that anyway.
To put it all down to love is actually trivialising what they’re showing us about the character, which is that there is actually something more to him under all that crap.

I disagree. I think it would work very well. The only obstacle is an ageing cast (or the 3/4 of the cast that aren’t wearing a rubber head), which Who can conveniently sidestep. Not that I have a problem with the guys looking older, but I imagine a lot of people would. Particularly a new audience in our endearingly youth-obsessed society.

When did Den of Geek interview Danny? Middle of July? He denied all knowledge of new Dwarf at that point. Surely they all would have been aware of it then for Bobby to be able to announce it in August???

I’m just not convinced about the whole animation thing.

They did a less than wonderful job with the CGI for Starbug/RD – it could have been *so* much better – although that was obviously down to budgetary constraints, and as for the Rimmer coffins in SMAC *shudders*. It gives me nightmares just to think about them doing a whole ep to that standard.

It could be done much better, regardless of the style of animation, but it never will be because they’ll never have the budget to do it justice.

Psirens isn’t *that* bad. Everything up to (and not including) Pete Tranter’s sister is OK.
Rimmerworld just bugs me for it’s rather gaping plot hole (Clone yourself from your DNA, eh? What DNA would that be, then?)
VI has it’s weak moments, but even the worst of VI surpasses most of VIII.
Possible exception of Cassandra. Maybe BITR #1 at a push.
Of course, that’s only IMO

Not that I know anything about these things, of course, but wouldn’t an animated series work out just as expensive as live action?
I mean, depending on the style of animation, there’s a whole lot of labour/time/CGI involved, which doesn’t come cheap, and you’ve still got to write the script and pay the cast – so what’s the point? Why not just make it live action in the first place?
I know which I’d prefer.

I have the software, so I had a go at this last night – just a *very* rough cut of the extended BITR.
If I cut out all the take-me-outside-and-shoot-me-through-the-head moments (blue midget dance, claymation, and so on) then it comes in at just over an hour. If I then went on to cut all the bits that simply aren’t funny, I suspect I would have just about enough for a half hour ep.

Which, when you think about it, is quite depressing.
Esp as it’s one of the better offerings from VIII.

BTW – it’s not possible to cut the Dibbley scene completely, as it’s required to show Kryten breaking his programming.

I have a lot of problems with the way Rimmer was written in VIII.

He’s not the Rimmer of series I, nor that of VI or VII, but some ghastly inconsistent hybrid. I suppose you could argue that the nano-bots resurrected a different version of Rimmer (much in the way that they resurrected a different version of RD), but I still have issues with it.

I’ve always found it a little too sweet for this.
I’d go for good ol’ Branston (other chutneys are avaiable), the sandwich variety for ease of spreading.

Similarly with the chilli sauce – a sweet chilli sauce doesn’t work.
And you need something with a decent kick to it.

The chilli sauce is important, though. I go for West Indian Hot Pepper Sauce, although Tabasco can be substituted at a push. And plenty of it.

But I agree with what you’re saying. I watched Spitting Image avidly as a teenager, and at the time it had a real impact on my political awareness. I recently spent a whole evening watching old clips on youtube, and it does take you back: you do remember what was going on at the time, and it was still relevant and funny. So I definitely think there’s a market for NTNON. It’s nonsense to say that people won’t get the gags.

BTW, I can name more of the ministers on Spitting Image that I can of the current cabinet. That can’t be right can it?

The problem with the Midget dance scene (as well as it being over-long) is that it just isn’t funny.

Whereas Tongue Tied *is* – and not because the song/dance is terribly funny, but because it’s character-based: it’s R & L doing the routine in those costumes that makes you laugh the most. Tongue Tied isn’t funny at all if you have no knowledge of character.

The Midget routine is a fantastic vehicle for Danny, but it doesn’t serve the show as a whole. And it
a) slows down the action
b) goes on for ever
c) just isn’t funny
