Back to Earth is massively underrated.
On a recent marathon rewatch, it was such a palate cleanse after VIII.
Like coming home after an abnoxiously raucous party full of people you hate.

You open the door to peace and quiet.

The lack of studio audience just adds to the serenity.

Also, I always want to reply to the title of this thread with “Was it all fossilised and stuff?”
Which is also a very good joke from Red Dwarf and part of a very good scene in an episode of the same.

I think we can all agree that it was a rare sequel that improves on the original, and is generally a high point for the entire show.

Anyone who experienced that as their first exposure was very lucky indeed.

    Good, moving on.

My older brother recorded Series I and II and we’d get up early to watch it before school.
Only hazy memories of that as I would’ve been 4 or 5.

Next encounter was the repeat of V (or the back end of it). Watched because friends at school (among their number Ryan Gage / Hitler) were big fans and I needed to know what the hell was going on when they’d reenact scenes in the playground.

I set the video for The Inquisitor but we had a power cut after the first five minutes.  There was no episode the following week cos of football or snooker or something, so for a fortnight I watched that opening five mins over and over.
Then finally it was the remainder of V followed by purchase of all the videos.
I remember us playing Terrorform in the playground and running away from an imaginary Lust Monster.

I wrote an essay at university on how the changing style of Red Dwarf mirrored the shifting trends in broader UK television and culture.

THAT WAS IN 2002, THIS IS ONLY COMING OUT NOW IN 2026.

Battlestar Galactica (’03) had a much-criticised but perfect ending.

Also – Game of Thrones.  The writing went to shit in the final season but I didn’t have an issue with the plot choices.

Any ideas what this could mean if it doesn’t mean wanking? Since that’s one of the few things Rimmer doesn’t need help with and that Lister can’t help with anyway, so one of the worst examples he could have gone with, but maybe he didn’t realise or care?

I think it includes wanking but is more a non-specific implication that “Rimmer is a creep and likes doing creepy things”.

Why would a fried egg sandwich with chilli sauce and chutney make you throw up?
Aside from the fact I’ve had one and it’s delicious, there’s nothing in the ingredients list that sounds particularly vomity even in a jokey sense
It is definitely the mess it makes, because it’s impossible to hold it all together and is filled with wet, sloppy, drippy ingredients. Citation – the gif I posted above on 4th Dec

Because they’re very drunk and eating something so adventurous at that point means a high likelihood of barfing.

It’s 100% vomiting.  It’s also a funny gag if it’s throwing up and not funny if it’s about dripping sandwich contents.

I will also die on this hill and kill if I must.

I hadn’t watched any new Simpsons in about 20 years.  On a whim stuck on the first couple of episodes of the latest season and was pleasantly surprised.

Seems to be getting out of the rut I hear it’s been in for a very long time, unless it’s always been good and people have just been morning excessively.  A fandom wouldn’t do that though, would it?

Also – big fan of Season One.  It’s a different but beautiful beast in its own right

“Smeg Outs” has always seemed an odd title for the follow-up to “Smeg Ups”.

“Smeg Ups” works…with “Smeg” taking the place of a naughtier word.

But “Smeg Outs”?  Are they playing on “Outtakes”, in which case “Smegtakes” or “Outsmegs” would’ve been better options.  Still not very good.

Maybe  “Smegabyte Two”, “Smegpocalypse Now”, “The Alpha and Oh-Smega!”

    Maybe not.

I searched to see if this had been mentioned previously, seems not.  “Samsara” is a play on “Samskara” – the Hindu philosophy of actions and thoughts leaving impressions that influence future suffering or reward, i.e. the basis of Karma.

The Oregon is THE Oregon, so it’s fair enough to assume other ships would be  referred to similarly at times.
Titanic / The Titanic… it’s interchangeable, even though “The Red Dwarf” hits the ear wrong.
Especially if it’s the ramscoop end.

I know Ed Bye complained about someone raising that one…but when you have the means to immediately travel anywhere and anywhen, it does rather wreck the whole premise of the show.

This may be a pipe dream, but is there any possibility that one day, someone will discover some clever way to combine the audio from these new soundtracks with the video from the Smega-Drive GIFs, in order to allow us to watch Red Dwarf with both video and audio together?

Sorry in advance if such a feat is technically impossible. :(

I think Ian Levine is working on his own animated recons.

At least they’ll start on some big laughs with the 14F joke and Lister not being allowed to speak.

Holoship also starts with the now inexplicable laughter at the various facial reactions to the film.

First gag of the series and they blow it like a biggun.

As part of a beginning to end rewatch, I’ve recently sat through VIII again.

Cassandra is such an anomolous upwards blip in writing quality from everything surrounding it that I’m now of the opinion that a ghostwriter was involved – either the entire script or a significant polish of a draft.

The mercenoid in Can of Worms was from The Rings of Akhaten, wasn’t it? They’ll know that Doctor Who fans will notice that sort of thing if anyone does, so they’re not really concerned. Especially after Doug’s experience with the movie and Back to Earth, just getting Red Dwarf on screen is enough.

For the last 5 mins I was thinking that The Rings of Akhaten was the recent Lord of the Rings animated film and wondering how Red Dwarf could’ve repurposed a prop from that.

Making it solid with some weird space ray, presumably.
