I kind of assume Smeg Ups and/or Smeg Outs was the sales peak for the series, but maybe not? But will he go off to No Doubt About It by Hot Chocolate or is that not cool enough? February 8, 2023 at 10:45 am in reply to: Red Dwarf on Teletext #282185 NeverLeavingFredParticipant It’s not really true that Britcom films flopped is it? Granted, most of them weren’t great, but they were often in the Top 10 or 20 for the year at the UK Box Office; famously the On the Buses movie made about as much as Diamonds are Forever! Sort it out, early 90s Teletext. February 1, 2023 at 9:19 pm in reply to: Novel material that overlaps with the show #282007 NeverLeavingFredParticipant In terms of stuff going the other way (i.e. material from the novels being adapted in the show) am I right in thinking Ouroborous essentially makes the implication that Kryten inadvertently killed the crew of the Nova 5 (as happens in the first novel) “cannon”, whereas in the original episode (and the following episodes) the cause of their accident went unexplained? January 26, 2023 at 12:16 am in reply to: Rob Grant’s Colony #281807 NeverLeavingFredParticipant I have fond memories of the paperback release, as I saw Rob at a reading/Q&A/signing at my local Ottakar’s that summer, which for a generally rather housebound 14 year-old, whose only gig had been John Shuttleworth a couple of months earlier, was quite the event. I read the book prior to the signing too, and I enjoyed it, more than I had enjoyed Dark Ages, The Strangerers or even Backwards (or Red Dwarf VIII for that matter). Can scarcely remember a thing about it some two decades later though. January 19, 2023 at 10:40 am in reply to: Refresh For The Memory: Series XII Byte 2 #281699 NeverLeavingFredParticipant Thanks, and you’re welcome Is the Dave era part of general awareness of the show now? My brother grew up watching the show and will quote the classics online sometimes, but he’s got no interest in any of the Dave era. I was certainly aware of them, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself typical or representative. I did watch X when it was new(ish). I also seem to recall there was a poster just outside my flat advertising either XI or XII when it was airing. I think I didn’t have access to Dave at the time; I took me a while to get the discs for no particular reason, It does seem there is a date stamp on entertainment for a lot of people, especially Film and TV. Once something is “old” they’re no longer interested. This isn’t a great comparison but a lot of people in my office were excited for those Live Action/”Live Action” remakes of Disney films as if it were a band doing a reunion concert; the idea of just watching the old versions simply wouldn’t occur to them. Nostalgia is big business, but it doesn’t necessarily extend to actually watching the things. (I believe Thrift Stores are the US equivalent of Charity Shops). I think it’s quite out of character for Rimmer to not like Glen Miller. Too raucous for him maybe? Perhaps that’s unfair, I haven’t heard how funky Funking Up Wagner gets. January 18, 2023 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Refresh For The Memory: Series XII Byte 2 #281685 NeverLeavingFredParticipant Believe it or not, I only just caught up with Series XI, Series XII and The Promised Land over the Xmas/New Year’s Eve period. I don’t know why you wouldn’t believe me, because you’ve no idea who I am and it would be a weird thing to come in here and claim if it wasn’t true. But it is anyway. I enjoyed it all, and Skipper was one of the best episodes… but yes the thing mentioned in this thread that I am to believe has been discussed ad nauseum since it first aired is indeed pretty distracting.
