    > Oh, and the VHS releases of the original unremastered series are labelled ‘Red Dwarf I’ etc., although not ‘Red Dwarf Series I’.

But is that an ‘I’ or a ‘1’ ?? grrr

I remember Doug or one of the cast mentioning ‘series nine’ so that’s good enough for me. :p

Also it IS ‘1’ and ‘2’ because they never had an official title, as opposed to the proceeding series’ which were actually known as ‘Red Dwarf III’ etc. technically all of them are ‘3’ ‘4’ etc. but people use the numerals for III onwards cause it was the actual title. Video releases MAY retcon that but whatever it’s still….a bone of contention (i.e. WRONG :p).

New Doctor Who is officially classed as a different show to the classic series (granted, this is probably solely due to boring stuff like rights renegotiations etc.), so it is and always will be wrong to call it ‘season 27’ and on, despite the fact people continue to do so.

The Holly scene works in Skipper because it’s very much a back-to-basics Holly/Rimmer. Once you have him in a scene with the full cast you’re stuck with the same situation from III-V, struggling for lines to give the character.

Cured was fine to open the series. I just wish it was a little better. A twist of the professor being the real Hitler would have done it for me.

    1. Cured
    2. M-Corp
    3. Siliconia
    4. Mechocracy
    5. Timewave
    6. Skipper

M-Corp was placed weirdly at episode 5, though we have had some great episode 5’s over the years! That being said, it should definitely have either opened the series or been episode 2. Definitely not in the back 3.

As for Timewave… a little editing and it wouldn’t be THAT bad. The main scene with Johnny Vegas is pretty funny until the Cat lines at the end. In fact, if it was just ‘Lieutenant Asshole’ I don’t think anyone would have cared. Cut out the two shittiest lines from the episode and it’s immediately more acceptable. Of course, you can’t cut the costumes… Though this and Siliconia are definitely the ones with most wasted opportunity. Siliconia is weird because you’re expecting for it to be a decent episode and….it’s just not.

    The actual twat is happening??????

    ANAL-MEAD & HYMEN

Lister and the crew become trapped in a VR simulation of a deranged message board from the early 21st Century, brought to life, where the posters’ every whim (and, indeed, quim) are met, not unlike a certain total-immersion videogame from a previous encounter. However, this time, instead of his own warped psyche putting the Dwarfers in danger, Rimmer finds himself at the mercy of the deeply depraved Doom-mongers while Lister wonders why everyone suddenly needs a slash…meanwhile, the Cat rolls around in his own doings to avoid passing the smell test and Kryten manages to break out of the board only to find himself in a place where the horrors multiply tenfold…mumsnet. :o

The first classic episodes I ever watched were Tomb of the Cybermen (Troughton) and The Green Death (Pertwee) and I’d totally recommend those as a starting point. The Mind Robber is another classic Troughton story which everyone should check out if they haven’t.

As for Tom Baker, I would recommend watching his entire run from start to finish (yeah it gets a little ropey toward the end of his 7-year tenure, but still…).

I’m REALLY glad Dwarf won’t be ‘binge’-released. Each episode deserves it’s own individual attention, and several viewings without the others getting in the way.

In fact, I don’t like the idea full stop. Whether it’s Netflix shows or otherwise. You simply don’t appreciate a show enough, or the ‘experience’ surrounding the show, if you binge the whole thing over a day or two.

Also, calling someone out for being outright offensive isn’t having a whine, it’s just…not being a dick. I have heard not being a dick is actually quite a fulfilling pastime, one which I may take up as a post-retirement hobby.

Oh wow it seems Cured could turn out pretty controversial as well as ‘Timewave’……..

As for Mechocracy, it sounds straight-up fun and we’re all up for that, surely? :) Skipper is the kind of thing you would be sure the show had done before, seeing as it’s such a Dwarf-y idea, but nope they’ve never quite been there (the appearance of Ace is the closest, I guess), so I’m picking this, Siliconia and Mechocracy as the ones to look forward to. The others…..we’ll have to see! :o

Yeah the constant slating of BtE pisses me off no end.

    – Sophie Winkleman, fucking brilliant
    – Some of the best effects the show has ever seen (especially the epic cargo bay)
    – Craig’s finest hour?
    – Carbug
    – the Corrie stuff, which IS good IMO
    – Noddy and that whole shop scene
    – Chloe’s appearance
    – Richard O’Callaghan as the Creator, again it’s nothing but great stuff
    – The scene with the kids on the bus, is genius
    – The last scene with Craig and Chloe makes me wanna cry, every single time…
    – The chase and glass stunt!! I mean, come on.

There’s shitloads to like about BtE and I genuinely would have loved the show to have carried on in this vein. It WAS the right decision to switch it up for X; but still….

It would only have taken a couple of extra lines to remove the irksome feeling surrounding Irene’s death. If she was causing some kind of danger to the crew, no-one would care that she gets flushed out into space.

Like with Pree, it doesn’t feel wrong that she’s been shut down because she’s been…somewhat threatening to Lister and the others and also the fact she’s a computer and has a computer-like personality. She’s sold to us as a villain. If she had basically been a new female Holly, likeable and done nothing but mildly annoy Lister and he then told her to shut herself down, or he accidentally fires her mainframe off into space… then you’ve got a similar issue.

That is seriously one of the most interesting articles, and I’m not sure why I didn’t read it originally. Yeah, it’s been 99% positive I’d say. I think part of that is the general dismay over what we’ve seen, thus far, from ST:Discovery and how refreshing the Orville seems in comparison.

The slating the McFarlane ‘brand’ comes mostly from pseudo-snobbery or jealousy. Though IMO the very best comedies/comedians are the ones who aren’t ‘got’ by everyone. You know they are taking enough risks to take the step up to the next level, in the process becoming fucking awesome at what they do and not caring for the opinions of the beige set.

Don’t know if there are any Oasis fans here, but, to me, VII & VIII are essentially what Be Here Now was for Oasis – the overblown ‘bloated’ 3rd album that came off the back of the huge popularity they had acquired by that stage.

Things were starting to go this way in VI… but VII is also where the following mantra was fully embraced – ‘ohhh we’re just a silly sitcom, so let’s be a silly sitcom!’ I believe the main reason VII doesn’t work is due to how this attitude totally flies in the face of the more ‘filmic’ look and feel. It’s such a clash!

Kryten’s character change epitomises the whole thing. Suddenly he’s being written and played like he’s ‘that silly mechanoid from that sitcom who whines, moans and cleans’, instead of simply BEING Kryten and letting the audience come to that conclusion naturally. VII is the series where they all should have been at their LEAST ‘sitcom’y’ stereotypical selves… It’s fine for them to be like that in a series like VIII (which has its own failings, for sure…..) but in VII it’s plain weird.

    AH WELL…

I see Dwarf as split 5 ways, and in theory you could like only one of these, and/or treat each of them as separate canon.

    1 & 2 – it’s own thing

III to VI & X to XII – the heyday and ‘proper’ Red Dwarf

The novels – totally their own thing

VII – a neat comedy adventure series with slightly dodgy execution

VIII – the ‘I took Prozac for a laugh’ year

    BtE – okay

So it seems they really have been trying to get Brittas going. I thought it was just wishful thinking from people?? Interesting what Chris says about the original writer (he doesn’t specify which one! :p) having to ‘come to term with where the BBC want to take it’ or whatever. My guess is they’d want it more like W1A or something, except with Brittas and crew…
