    CHUCK TO REALITY

Paul and Barry Chuckle die in a Chucklevision sketch gone wrong, only to wake up and find their entire careers have been fake and they are actually two piss-poor celebrity impersonators on the run, hiding out in a total immersion video game. Paul deduces he must be a Freddie Mercury impersonator given his moustache and newly discovered prominent teeth.

    TO ME, TO BLUE

The ghost of Barry Chuckle auditions for Doug and impresses him so much, he gets the role of Rimmer in Series XIII over the able-bodied Chris Barrie. The cast watch a “best of Chris Barrie” showreel and promptly decide they never actually liked him.

I think the Dave era of Dwarf has been highly disappointing. I know people do complain about it but are willing to let things pass or accept certain changes in the show that mean it has to be the way it is, but I just can’t. The show looks more impressive (mostly) on Dave but for me the acting, jokes, some effects, plots and direction of the show to comedy/drama instead of straight comedy have been on a downhill trajectory since Series VIII and it has only on rare occasions managed to climb briefly for me before falling back down again. For a show I absolutely adore, it pains me to see it in this way. I expect everyone to jump on me for saying it, but it’s honestly how I feel. I still keep watching new Dwarf hoping to see something that is funny and reminds me of the glory days and more often than not I come away from it disappointed.

Well DJ isn’t until next year, so they aren’t waiting to announce it then if they’re gonna be filming Nov & Dec.

If they are filming then and there’s going to be an audience, shouldn’t tickets be going up soon for it? Unless of course part of the deal for XIII is no audience so they can use the money elsewhere and maybe expand the sets etc. Maybe a full size midsection for Starbug or more corridors/rooms on the ship?

I still hate the filmic look the show has. They can remove it but have left it in for artistic reasons. For me, it makes the show look too glossy and ruins the atmosphere the show is trying to create. If anything, I wish the next series, if it is going to be final, would just remove it and bring the show back to how it used to look.

Maybe UKTV will pass on XIII and Doug can take it to the BBC who could give it a 6 or 8 episode series to finish the show for good. Rob could even come back for it. It started and ended on BBC 2. How fitting.

Starbug taking off from the Low ship in Demons & Angels with the explosions around it.

Starbug flies towards and under the camera and the camera spins above and then flips to a shot of Starbug flying away from the camera

Starbug landing in the lava in Gunmen. You expect to cut away and not actually see the ship impact the surface but you actually do, which is a nice surprise as you’d expect them to be able to pull up in the nick of time but yet they don’t.

V and VI really did have some gorgeous model work. Shame it’s actually rubbish now in comparison.

The majority of those questions were piss-easy though. Kryten drives up in a tank and is rather angry, then reaches down to pull on something. What happens next? Well, I doubt there’d be many people who wouldn’t even be able to take an educated guess that he fires at them. What else could he possibly do? Drive over them? Just angrily stare at them until they give in and come back for supper? It’s a tank for a reason. Whoever set those questions clearly wasn’t a fan themselves and picked any old random shite to stand in as a question.

If the items triplicated had a limited lifespan, what was the point of it at all? If they triplicated a load of food in one go, and only ate the high portion, would it disappear after being eaten leaving the person who ate them hungry as their stomach would be empty?

Most of VIII was rather meh. Anything after VIII has been mainly rubbish. BTE was shite. X had a strong start with Trojan and the rest, bar The Beginning, was crap. XI was OK in parts but mainly awful. Same with XII. The acting/characterisation is all over the shop, the plots are weak, the jokes are bad, Doug is destroying the show by being the only one in charge and has lots of yes men at the production company who will let him do whatever he wants. But hey, it wins the odd comedy award so lets just keep flogging this dead horse another few years, eh?

Having said all that, I’ll still watch any new episodes. Perhaps that’s the problem…?

Justice was on the other day and I remember seeing the end and not noticing before the obvious re-use of the same corridor, but they did disguise it well with the boys walking around some stuff on the floor and the camera panning around as they did it to make it look like they were going down a different corridor. Until watching it that time, I never really registered that they walked down the corridor they just walked up from.

Unpopular Opinion – RoboCop 2 was better than RoboCop 1

At least give us your reasoning for this point of view. I do like RoboCop 2 but there is no way it’s a better film that the original. The stop motion fight at the end though is a fantastic piece of model work and probably the last big stop motion sequence used in films before CGI became the norm.

RoboCop is a great film, RoboCop 2 is good in parts and the less said about RoboCop 3 and the 2014 remake the better. The original writers and the studio are planning a proper sequel to the 1987 original so hopefully that comes to fruition and is as good as the 1987 film.

When I was a youngster watching the show, I at times thought it was “goldfish holes” and then that evolved into “goldfisho’s” which I imagined was the evolution of the word goldfish or the species itself since the show was set 3M+ years into in the future. I was fine with it because we had space weevil and GELFs and thought it was just another futuristic term.

A new bunk room and another tweak to the outfits for Kryten and Rimmer. Those bloody swollen hand gloves on Robert look awful, and we’ve had 3 series in a row with Rimmer in blue. Try a new colour. The show got a huge redesign every few years, I think it’s time for that now. Perhaps get rid of the medi-bay and have an all purpose drive room again. And of course, a tweak to the cockpit of Starbug and an open door into a mid-section which gets used and isn’t a corridor redressed with boxes and green lighting.

I hate the placement of the “Series…” text o the spine of the DVDs. There’s plenty of space above or below the cast photo o the bottom to place a simple Roman numeral to indicate the series number. Instead, someone thought it was a great idea to plaster the text over the logo and not even have them the same size or location depending on what cover they designed.

Actually, ‘Dave’ originally launched in October 1998 and was called UK Gold Classics. It then changed to UK Gold 2 in April 1999. It wasn’t until November 2003 that it changed name to UKG² and then again in March 2004 with the UKTV corporate rebrand, it changed name to UKTVG2 and then finally Dave in October 2007.

So, when Red Dwarf VIII was on BBC 2, Dave was called UK Gold Classics. 3 days before “Only The Good…” was aired, the channel changed name to UK Gold 2.

I hope the cover is reversible and it matches the others, the spine logo is finished so the IX, X and XI (and presumably XII) covers will just be different colour continuations of what’s on the VIII/X spines with no extra logo to fit on, unless a small one is panned of RD itself or Starbug but I doubt it. I even hope the logo is the new/old version if it does appear on any reversible cover.

He said in an interview that you will hear him but you mightn’t recognise him. So I imagine he will be dressed in some form, either as a simulant, another Kryten model or something that will disguise his face…

I liked it. I thought it was quite good. Well done.

This is the problem for me. If it all is the same as VII, VIII, BTE and X (pantomime-y acting and not that funny) but with some extra money thrown at it so it looks better on screen than before, then what was the point? The cast and Doug talk about having known each other for so long and get on so well etc., then surely Doug should have been able to reign in the performances and tell them they are going to pantomime-y and to stop it. He should have made them re-watch S3/4/5/6 as homework and tell them that’s how the characters should behave and interact. We don’t want to see wacky versions of the characters who seem completely different than they did before. The stories could be good and the effects could be fantastic, but if the acting/characterisation isn’t, then you’ve lost it completely.

The computer sound effects from Series 3-5 were really nice, I’d like to hear them again for a bit of nostalgia.
