I believe the dinner tray thing is to give the walls some shape and texture, which is crazy as you’d just create flat walls as far as you can. If there has to be anything behind them, you wouldn’t wind the wall in and out around it, you’d just make it slightly deeper and have a flat wall. I’m sure there’s reason for it looking better on camera or something, but it make no logical sense

The new sets a little too modern / futuristic aren’t they? I don’t think there would have been any shame in keeping the sets looking a bit out dated. It meant to be a big industrial mining ship, not a high tech space craft.

I appreciate they are suffering the same fate as Star Trek, where modern technology has caught up with the tech shown on screen in some cases, but it is a comedy, and the little knowing nods to things like using VHS in the future are quite nice. Star Trek needs to look flash and advanced, Red Dwarf doesn’t and never really did. It should look like an oil rig in space.

It can afford to look a little more old a decrepit, that’s part of it’s charm. It doesn’t need to look sharp. Other ships they discover can, and should, but not Red Dwarf.

Thats not to say they don’t look fantastic, just that it’s unnecessary IMO. Starbug for example has had so many updates over the years it’s gone from a crappy little ship to surface vessel to a full blown intersetella space craft in its own right.

BACK IN THE RED TOP

After years of drinking semi-skimmed milk and exhausting supplies, Kryten discovers several crates of skimmed milk tea in the cargo hold.

Meanwhile, Rimmer questions how food supplies can remain fresh after 3 million years and sets up a board of food safety inspectors. Everyone ignores him and drinks the milk anyway, resulting in Lister and Cat getting diarrhea and shitting everywhere

MILK-CORP

A fleet of space faring milkmen catch up with Red Dwarf with a final demanding for 18,000 dollar pounds in unpaid milk bills. All milk on board Red Dwarf is turned invisible until they settle the invoice.

I think it says a lot when, after reading all the novels multiple times, I can never remember the plot of Last Human.

The others all seem much more like Red Dwarf to me, and Backwards feels like the natural continuation of the other two

The crew travel through time trying to solve a crime aboard Red Dwarf, in a cross over with Chloe Annett’s short lived series Crime Traveller. It’s a shit episode.

DEER DAVE

Upon entering an unreality picket, Lister is turned into a deer and everyone believes this has been completely normal for the past 6 years and the episode continues with a deer at the helm attempting to navigate the pockets for another 20mins. It ends abruptly and the next episode starts with Lister returned to normal with no explanation

CRASS ANDREA

The crew awake an old punk from the stasis booth of a derelict ship, known as Crass Andrea owing to her always wearing a denim cut off jacket with a CRASS patch on the back.

Her and Lister hit it off and compare their own styled clothes before jamming along to some old punk records that have been found in storage on the ship. Lister is surprisingly good, but only because punk requires you’re inability to play the guitar well.

Rimmer starts a petition to shut down the new band owing to “noise complaints” (which unsurprisingly have been submitted by him) but Lister and Crass Andrea just spit on him, flick him off and carry on playing.

Hurriedly towards the end of the episode, when it is apparent there is another human woman on the ship, Doug writes in an hilarious scenario where Crass Andrea trips and falls out the airlock.

BRYNNERWORLD

The crew discover a world populated entirely by Yul Brynner. Uninterested in this discovery they move on and the episode ends very abruptly

The Cats favourite red bowl to eat crispies out of is cracked, and he has to replace it with a white bowl. He is very upset.

Meanwhile Kryten scrubs the wank stains from the ceiling of Lister’s bunk.

Warwick lives in the UK though. Different cultures / regions will have different reactions to certain words and phrases depending on their history with them. So, in the UK Warwick could well be right, but that doesn’t mean in stands in the US.

ITS TO EARLY FOR THAT STAR TREK CRAP

The USS Discovery accidentally jumps into the Red Dwarf universe. When the crew are alerted in the early hours of the morning to another ship near by Lister rolls over and dismisses the alert before going back to sleep until lunch time.

Yeah same now I think about it. Don’t mind meeting the occasionally human if it’s done right … like Timewave for example … despite the episode being shit, they were pulled from the past into the present.

But it’s much more interesting when they come across other forms of life, even if it does get a little repetitive, it highlights that whilst there maybe some life in the universe, it is human made and Lister is still the last alive … Kochanski notwithstanding of course.

I didn’t count the Polymorph or Hudzen 10 because they both arrived on Red Dwarf on their own ships/shuttles.

One was left adrift in a pod that assumable floats through space from its point of origin. Hudzen 10, like the post pod, was trying to catch up to the Nova 5 (presumable) and then Red Dwarf since they left the solar system.

I was looking at derelicts and such that had made is that far out, ships under a crew that had died/crashed etc.

They also make the point in X is it, or BTE, that they haven’t really encountered anyone or anything for a long time. The entire time the show is off air.

In fact, its only Hoggie that seems to show up as having met the crew in all that time, and it seems he is as bored as they are.

I like the idea of going through different areas of space. Populated, nothing at all. Thats what space would be like, depending on how far out the human race has expanded.

In fact, the first thing they ever come across is Kryten … and if we take the novels as canon, then that had a drive to hop it out to the far reaches of space to turn a star super nova.

Then next encounter is what? Camille in series 4?

Takes them a while to get into any sort of populated space. Maybe the time in between is between galaxies or something? RD can clearly travel very fast (future echos) so makes sense they slow down when in a star system and speed up in between

At the end of The Beginning, Rimmer echos “the slims coming home” line from The End (god damn you Doug Naylor!!)

Anyway … you could read that as the crew now treating Red Dwarf as their true home, and not just a place to stay on their return to Earth.

At this point all the characters have spent more time in deep space than on Earth. In fact, Lister may well be the only character to have ever actually lived on Earth. Rimmer is from Io, Kryten was likely built off world then switched on on the Nova 5. Cat grew up on Red Dwarf.

I can buy them not really bathing to try and get back, but just live day to day in floating through space and convienently ignoring ways in which they could get to Earth if they wanted.

I honestly can’t remember. Was a teenager probably, which would put me early 00s and I would have seen all of Red Dwarf at that point but maybe not so much that I knew it all inside out and back to front as I do now.

Maybe the drive plate fix was really simple, like just a loose screw. But Rimmer being Rimmer ballsed that up so spectacularly (maybe by taking the whole thing apart to give it a polish) that he broke it to the point he blew.

Yeah I felt this. Would prefer guest stars to just be random people for the most part, or at least not so famous they could/do star in their own shows.

The show should be about the comedy, the characters and the story (not always necessarily in that order), having other famous people in every episode playing a character anyone else could have played is just … I dunno, wrong.

Confidence and Para-gliding
