Rimmer’s made of light, though, so green is primary for him.

I think you can take the Nirvanah line either way and it’s funny either way, but I definitely took it (given his past form) as over quickly but ready to go again soldier just as quickly.

For example, in Me2, Rimmer gives a two finger salute to the other Rimmer by casting a shadow on the screen. But, as Rimmer at the time was made of soft light, how is it possible for Rimmer to cast a shadow, not only here but at any point before Legion?

The shadow is also a hologram?

I mean, it’s not exactly a massive reach.

If anybody knows anything about Formula One, they will know that the race in which Ayrton died in was pretty much cursed from start to finish.

It wasn’t “cursed” though, it was the culmination of several factors including the removal of electronic driver aids (making cars harder to drive) and an emphasis at the time on vastly increased cornering speed without making comparable advancements in cockpit safety (because, with a couple of decades since the last fatality, it wasn’t seen as a necessary priority). It’s true that an ominous air hung over that weekend from the moment Barrichello had his crash, and that there were some unfortunate coincidences (not to mention little moments that add to the legend such as Senna’s conversation with Sid Watkins and the Austrian flag he had in the cockpit); but equally, there were other bad accidents in 1994 as well and it just so happened that several of them happened at once at Imola. That doesn’t mean it was “cursed”, just that that’s the moment everything came to a head.

As for your video, I’m not entirely certain why footage of the accident itself and its grisly televised aftermath is much of a “tribute”, but maybe that’s just me.

Speaking of Timeslides, Graham Chapman would have been much better than Ruby Wax.

I’m not certain of this. In general Graham Chapman is much better than Ruby Wax but I have a hard time imagining what that scene would have been like with him. So differently-written as to not really be comparable, I guess.

one of my favoured Red Dwarf fan theories is that the future versions of Lister from Future Echoes (and also the future versions of the crew from Stasis Leak) are from the same timeline as the future crew from Out Of Time

Stasis Leak might work, but Future Echoes Lister isn’t a brain in a jar.

In the Re-Dwarf documentary you can see the Rimmer’s mum redub as one of the notes they show. It says something like replace with a more “well-spoken” voice, which she has in Dimension Jump. So I doubt they would have changed it there, I think they were just aiming for more consistency between the two versions.

    >I, II, and VI at 30, 30, and 25, respectively? Am I not thinking straight?

Well yeah, but if you’re picking different numbers out of the air then every year is literally the [something] anniversary year of every series.

But this year is the thirtieth anniversary of both series I and II, is what I meant.

    >it’s so incredibly strange that we got nothing whatsoever in real terms

The problem is that (unless you’re Doctor Who) it’s sometimes quite difficult to line things up for a specific date, particularly given how recent the RDXII cycle (and the focus on all of that) was. So there may still be Interesting Stuff to come, it’s just that we weren’t yet in a position to make a song and dance about it yesterday.

As was the case in 2008, I think the attitude is very much to treat the whole of 2018 as the anniversary year, and 15th Feb as the start of it, not the be all and end all. As we wrote on the site today: “You’d better stay tuned for the rest of 2018, because we promise you it’s not over yet.”

It absolutely bothers me that shooting your past self both keeps you alive but destined not to become that person and kills your past self for good right then and there in the same episode.

It’s taken me twenty years, but I’ve come up with a rationalisation for this: Lister is wrong. Lister thinks that they were brought back to life by virtue of being killed by their past selves, and that’s what he tells his camera recording. What he doesn’t know is that Rimmer destroyed the time drive and that that’s what caused the reset.

Have to say, I completely disagree on the gay panic idea. It’s not gay panic. It’s Rimmer panic. I think if you’ve never seen the show before then yes, it could come off as “This man is disgusted that he’s just imagined kissing another man”. But if you know anything about Lister and Rimmer and their pre-existing dynamic, then there’s surely nothing to it than “Oh my God, I just kissed Rimmer”.

To be fair one of the points the episode was making was that Kennedy’s image became larger than life because of how he was assassinated, and how left to his own devices he would have left a far less flattering one. That is the whole reason he shot himself.

Also, the person saying that Kennedy was “a fine man” is Rimmer. Who also idolises Napoleon Bonaparte.

Never got the “Hello, wall!” line either, unless Doug’s intention was to characterise Kochanski as being as annoying and humourless as certain members who think their basic sledgehammer sarcasm counts as genuine wit.

I like it as a Frank Grimes moment: it’s Kochanski reacting with utter exasperation at characters that we’ve got used to being dumb and funny. Yes, it’s a bit sledgehammery, but she’s basically been driven to it by that point.

There aren’t many gags in any of the series that top “It’s an obscene phone call” for me, either.

    >Nation’s agent was very cunning to demand the rights to the Daleks remain with him.

Mmm, not really, it’s standard practice for all characters created by freelance writers to have the rights owned by that writer – was always thus on the old show and continues to be so on the revived one. They have to get agreement from and pay them any time they want to use any of them. It’s just that the Nation Estate/Tim Hancock are the ones more likely to kick up a fuss, as they have the bargaining power of the fact that it’s the Daleks.

RTD’s agent also represents a lot of the old writers’ estates, and she’s much nicer about it.

Indeed. If series 9 was truly a ‘lost’ series, then it would make sense of BtE not being 9, X coming along. There would actually be a joke in the numbering of the series, which is about as meta as it comes.

This is the point, though, isn’t it? BTE contains dialogue that refers to a mythical series 9 that we haven’t seen and will never see. Then the show comes back for another series, and it’s not series 9, it’s series 10.

That’s the joke. That’s absolutely the joke. I’ve always seen it as deliberate.

I might have been not being entirely serious about the Divine Comedy thing anyway. But yes, I figured when he did Victory that was the point at which he was finally acknowledging Fanfare as a thing rather than brushing it away.

Also it IS ‘1’ and ‘2’ because they never had an official title, as opposed to the proceeding series’ which were actually known as ‘Red Dwarf III’ etc. technically all of them are ‘3’ ‘4’ etc. but people use the numerals for III onwards cause it was the actual title.

Wellllll only Series III uses “Red Dwarf III” onscreen – none of Series IV, V or VI do so. So is “Red Dwarf IV” any more correct than “Red Dwarf I”? Only if you give the Radio Times listing more authority than the onscreen title card.

And even if you are going by the Radio Times argument, the “Red Dwarf [Numeral]” discussion is entirely separate from the “Series [Numeral]” discussion. I can understand doing this:

    Red Dwarf (series 1)
    Red Dwarf (series 2)
    Red Dwarf III
    Red Dwarf IV
    Red Dwarf V
    … etc

… although I wouldn’t do it myself. But I can’t see any justifiable basis for this:

    Red Dwarf Series 1
    Red Dwarf Series 2
    Red Dwarf Series III
    Red Dwarf Series IV
    Red Dwarf Series V
    … etc

… since, unless anyone wants to correct me, the first time “Series [Numeral]” was officially used to designate the series was on the DVD releases. And in that instance, they all used numerals.

    >i think there is a Series I and II, isn’t there? it’s on my shelf, im sure of it

Basically, there’s a long-running G&T argument that the first two series aren’t referred to by Roman numerals, because that way of naming the show only came in with Series III. As such, they’ve always been pedantically referred to around here as “Series 1” and “Series 2”.

I have never agreed with this, because Roman numerals have been used for the first two series ever since the VHS releases. And the DVD spines refer to them as “Series I” and “Series II”. Whereas I’ve never seen “Series 1” and “Series 2” used in any official context, anywhere.

Yep, I-VIII were £19.99, Just The Smegs was £15.99.
As great as the set was, £49.99 was as indefensible then as it is now.

    Conversely:

Bodysnatcher Collection = 14 hours of content = 6p per minute
    Series I = 264 minutes of content = 13p per minute
Just the Smegs = 100 minutes of content = 16p per minute

“Indefensible”? I’d say it’s better value than any of the previous releases!
