Was a one day only offer.

    > I?m sure the distance stuff and the spider thorax were all CG though.

Actually the entire spider body was a practical prop, moved around on hyrdraulic pistons. It’s fooking massive. Saw it at the Doctor Who exibition.

    Ah yes…non-animated. I meant non-animated.

But it’s still better than EVERYTHING other than the Simpsons (and maybe Futurama).

I actually enjoyed it a lot more than Bender’s Big Score.

BBS was good, but seemed to be trying too hard to be an epic event – and it really wasn’t.

This felt more like good old fashioned quickfire random as heck Futurama.

Think both specials have been better than Season 4 (which I reckon is pretty weak).

Yes, yes…for the love of God YES.

Arrested Development is sheer genius. Best comedy of the past 10 years in my opinion….and probably the best episodic American comedy ever.

A while ago I bought some proof of concept video covers that were refused by Doug Naylor (and have his annoyances scrawled on them in black marker).

They were for double video full series box-sets, series 1 to 6. Quite cool, but amusingly shit – photos are from the wrong series, etc. Think I remember him mentioning them in an interview once.

Ah yes….I recall that I once had a DVD player that wouldn’t play the alternative effects in Dalek Invasion of Earth at all.

Think the Who DVDs are a bit wonky in that respect.

The Holly grail of Red Dwarf?

    Deliberate mistake?

Wonder where this came from in the first place? Given away as a prize in a UK Gold competition perhaps?

*edit* Ah, yes…I see that this is explained in the listing. Gave up reading the details after the 50th spelling error.

I still don’t really get the whole Bad Wolf thing. Why those words? Why scattered through time? To leave a message to herself? What was the message?

I remember it all being so very vague.

I thought the ulitmate downer was that for Donna, the Doctor was the only person who could bring it out. Tate mused on Confidential that Donna will probably now just be a gobby temp for the rest of her life..and I’m inclined to agree.

The whole thing left me cold. The show takes an irritating, seemingly shallow character and takes us on a journey with her – seeing her develop above and beyond all her (and our) expectations…

And then it’s all snatched away and we’re back to square one…with no good reason other than to leave us depressed. I do enjoy the melancholy moments…but this one just seemed to shit over an entire character arc.

I know the themes of the episode revolved around the way we are changed through experiences and interaction with those around us…but that was made very clear through the fate of the human-timelord Doctor and very clear from the evolution of Donna. You didn’t need to reset her to make the point.

Darn it, I guess I just didn’t want to see Donna disappear like that. And that’s something I never thought I’d say!

I understand that we got to see how much Donna had changed due to her travels with the Doctor through comparison with her mind-wiped pre-doctor persona…

But is having her character arc reset really the most satisfying outcome? Doesn’t it just nullify her entire journey and everything we’ve seen?

The way he was largely mute and was being told where to go…

He ended up seeming like Rose’s inflatable Doctor sex toy.

And if timelord / human hybrids created in these circumstances cannot exist for long (i.e. Donna), how come he can?

    > I?m also curious as to how the specials are going to work. A short series of individual stories or an epic story spread across several parts. Has anyone heard anything? Also companion-wise having only a series of guest stars seems a bit wrong.

Rumours are that they will be as follows:

Easter – one-off special featuring the Sea Devils

Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day – 3-part special featuring the return of the master.

Afraid I thought it was a massive pile of plops…with a few gleaming nuggets.

    The bad:

Davies has once again proved that he can’t cash the cheques that his brain writes. Why destroy two “fix everything” plot maguffins, only to turn Donna into a walking talking one?

The Doctor Donna was possibly the most annoying thing ever created.

Why did Rose have to go back to her own universe? Surely it’d be better for the potentially dangerous human / timelord doctor to remain in ours, so that the real doctor can sort him out in case he goes mental? Plus, I thought the dimension hopping was tearing the universe apart and should be avoided at all costs?

    Freema Agyeman – awful.

Mickey and Jackie – shoe-horned into it, appearing out of nowhere brandishing guns.

    Not enough Davros!

Destroying the entire Dalek fleet AGAIN. We all know they’re coming back, so why create the need to re-invent them yet again?

Donna isn’t still half timelady, is she? So why would just the memories of her time with the Doctor kill her?

The Doctor’s depression at being alone again has been played up so many times…just wanted him to cheer the hell up.

    The good:

    Bernard Cribbins. Utterly superb.

    German Daleks!

    Davros was perfect.

    Loved it.

It did have some of the worst Davies excesses – blunderbus narrative which goes at a million miles an hour, throwing in everything but the kitchen sink, leaping from one poorly conceived plot contrivance to the next with a reset button looming on the horizon…

But the Daleks were fantastic and Davros was absolutely stunningly perfect. Also thought Billie was much better this week.

Seems that the plot is following the path of the spoilers…here’s hoping they were all wrong from this point on, though. Two Doctors seems a naff idea.

Anyone else notice that at one point Donna heard the sound of drums?

Speaking of which… how about these for some excellent ideas? Found them on a Doctor Who fan fiction website. Spelling errors left intact:

    Episode 1 The Quake
The Doctor takes Donna to 1985 Northumberland where it is the miners strike in the mines people are going missing getting turned into coal by a coal monster and turning into coal dust.

    2 – dark matter
the doctors home truths and dark secrets are brought back to haunght him!

    Episode 4 The Odd Web
A web falls to earth and some very odd eggs fall out and it’s the Racnoss but then they turn into ood then slitheen then daleks then rose. The doctor finds out it’s a shpeshifter and when it keeps changing faster and faster it becomes a bomb.
The doctor thinks of Rose and runs off and cries.

(I love the idea of ‘odd eggs’ as a weapon.)

    Episode 12 The Gallifrian Rings
The Doctor takes Donna back to earth to see if The Master had still any chance of living. But when The Doctor notices The Masters ring has disapered. So The Doctor and Donna go to investigate only to realise that The Doctor is again not alone.

    Episode 13 The Duplicate Power
Now with The Doctor held stuck in The ….’s labatory. Donna realises that she must steal the rings to stop the triplacate powers. But must travel the world in the TARDIS using the Doctor’s thought to control it. Donna must find the rings fast or the human race will be duplicated to death. But now all the …. needs is The Doctor’s ring. The …. mean the Rani The Rani is a time lord like The Master. Evil and is very good at disguising.

    (Duplicated to death?)

Very very spoilery stuff for next two episodes…and the specials next year from someone who claims to have an inside source…could be bollocks and, indeed, some sounds bollocks… but some sounds potentially accurate…

    SO POTENTIALLY VERY SPOILERY….

REALLY, THESE ARE BIG SPOILERS….SKIP THIS POST IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW…

    HERE THEY COME!

    READY?

    STILL READING?

    Ok….

    – Rose and the Doctor do not meet until the last five minutes of episode 12: The Stolen Earth, in which as the Doctor runs towards Rose he is shot by a Dalek. The left side of his chest glows and he slumps to the floor. Rose shoots the Dalek and goes to the Doctor, begging him not to die. Jack and Donna come to them and carry the Doctor to the TARDIS where he starts to regenerate…[end of episode 12]

    – As the Doctor regenerates at the beginning of episode 13 the regeneration energy sparks out and hits the Doctor’s hand in the glass jar which he now has in the TARDIS. This causes the regeneration to go badly wrong, causing the Tenth Doctor to remain the Tenth Doctor, and the hand grows into a duplicate of the Tenth Doctor. So, two David Tennant’s are running around episode 13.

    – The proper Doctor is still in the his brown suit. And Ten’s duplicate wears the blue suit. However, the duplicate in the blue suit is human and not a Time Lord…or Gallifreyan.

    – Donna dies, but the Doctor goes back in time and saves her life and ends up wiping her memory of everything she has done with him, so she doesn’t remember who he is.

    – At the end of episode 13, Rose goes back to her parallel world where the human duplicate of the Tenth Doctor stays with her, and gets to live the life that the proper Doctor has never had. Basically, the 10/Rose shippers get their ending even if its not the real Doctor. The duplicate of Ten is only human so only has a life-span of a human, so Rose gets her happy ending with a “fake Doctor”.

    – Mickey and Martha will be in 5 Torchwood specials which will represent series 3.

    2009 Specials Spoilers!!!

    – The Master does not appear in the Series 4 finale, however he is set to appear in the 2009 specials. He was originally lined up to appear in Series 4 but is not now.

    – The sea-devils are also set to reappear in the specials….

    – One special will air at Easter 2009. The other three (there is now four in 2009) will be a three-parter, airing over the Christmas period, with part one on Xmas Day, part 2 on Boxing Day and Part 3 on New Years Day in 2010. (So one of the specials will air in 2010..)
