Yes, DwarfCasts are finally back, following a four month wait between the end of Series XI and a day on which almost all of us could be in the same room. Has this additional thinking time enabled us to process our thoughts on the series enough to provide a coherent and insightful analysis as to where it went right and where it went wrong, or will it be the usual mix of ranting, swearing and giggling? Join Jonathan Capps, John Hoare, Tanya Jones, Danny Stephenson (down the line from our Yorkshire branch) and Ian Symes to find out.

Dave's Red Dwarf XI Bank Holiday Monday featured image

"Now on Dave, it's time to sit back and relax this Bank Holiday Monday, as we bring you an afternoon in the company of the finest smegheads out there - with the complete series of Red Dwarf XI."

– Dave continuity announcement into Twentica, 2nd January 2017

Most people, when greeted with a continuity announcement like that, might think: "Oh, that's good, I get to half-watch all of Red Dwarf XI this afternoon whilst pretending to get some work done." Or perhaps: "I hate Red Dwarf, Red Dwarf is shit, I am going to turn over, I need to watch anything other than Red Dwarf because I don't like Red Dwarf."

Us? We clap our hands in delight, as we indulge in one of our favourite pastimes: pre-watershed Red Dwarf edit spotting. Although perhaps to our surprise, only two of the six episodes had any alterations whatsoever: Twentica, Officer Rimmer, Krysis and Can of Worms got away cut-free.

Let's take a look at what was changed...

Red Dwarf XI: The Game - Give & Take Playthrough featured image

A few days ago the ever reliable GameDigits delivered to us a fine Christmas present in the shape of their Give & Take update for Red Dwarf XI: The Game. It has ended up being an incredibly pleasant way to close out a year that's been stuffed full of Red Dwarf activity and so I have once again recorded my first playthrough of the entire episode, along with my own brand of unfocused and unprofessional commentary.

2016 may have been a shithouse by most metrics, but I can’t remember the last time there was just so much new Red Dwarf stuff released in a calendar year. GameDigits have just managed to sneak in one more thing before the year is out, the key details of which are summarised in this tweet:

We’re hoping that our video review will be along before Santa empties his sack into your astonished stocking. In the meantime, use this thread for general discussion, and the long-standing forum thread for anything spoilery. And when you play through this episode of the game, see if you can spot the impact of our feedback on Kryten’s files…

Rounding out our immediate coverage of Give & Take we now present to you the archived version of this Thursday's LIVE DwarfCast, where we dissected the episode for all of its jucy, jucy kidneys. Present were Ian Symes, Tanya Jones, Jonathan Capps, Danny Stephenson, the Fan Club's Jo Sharples and an intermittently snoring and purring black short hair called CJ. Discussion topics this week include the large number of talking points generated by the episode, as well as some breaking DVD news, speculation as to how the mobile game will eventually represent the events of the episode and finally a preview of what's to come next week / today.

As the great splitting of the Red Dwarf fanbase enters its third week, those of you waiting for Give & Take to appear on broadcast television in glorious HD need not wait much longer as that momentous event will happen at 9pm (BST) tonight on Dave, Red Dwarf‘s seemingly nice but slightly weird step-dad. Once you’re done watching the episode then you should probably mosey on over to the Let’s Talk About thread from last week and have a sneak peak at at the bulk of what we’ll be talking about tonight in our Talking Points article. If you want some in depth opinion on the episode then my review is the place to be for my usual brand of post-episode giddiness.

And now, finally, since I’ve rested control over this article from the tyrannical clutches of Ian ‘Ian’ Symes I can finally give you this sentence with the correct use of capital letters in our podcast’s name, so join us for our Live DwarfCast at 10pm (BST) tonight. We’ll be doing our usual deep dive analysis on the episode and, for reasons that I am still yet to fully comprehend, encouraging you to soil us with your filthy opinions so we can read them out on air in condecending voices. Once the stream is live you’ll have a handy link up there in the top right where the terrifying countdown currently resides, plus we’ll be Tweeting about it, too, if you like that sort of thing.

tl;dr: watch G&T, listen to G&T, drink G&T.

Ah, the BBFC, they’ve served us so well over the years, with episode title reveals and confirmations of DVD extras aplenty. As expected the forthcoming DVD and Bluray release has now been through classification and so all episodes and extras can be found on their website. I’ll be keeping this rundown spoiler neutral, although be warned that some of the BBFC’s notes might reveal details about the rudeness levels of future episodes.

Red Dwarf XI: Give & Take Review featured image

Give & Take was the first episode of Red Dwarf XI to go in front of the cameras, and yet curiously it's been shuffled into the episode 3 position in favour of an episode that, before broadcast, was being touted as a classic. Does this mean we've got a bit of a clunker on our hands? Is it really looking like this series decided to put its best foot forward and saved nothing for later? Were things a little bit rusty before production settled down into its mammoth multi-month and series schedule? Well, let's see...

Talking Points: Give & Take featured image

With the presence of that ampersand in the title card, it's a wonder that there's anything left to discuss, other than the fact that there is now officially an episode of Red Dwarf with the same initials as this website. While that may cause some confusion later down the line, the issue remains of what kind of episode we've lent our name to. Based on just the one viewing (and a bit of a skim through to clarify some of the finer details of the plot), here are the big six (count 'em) talking points from the episode.

One thing to note, if you've somehow managed to miss all the spoiler warnings: this episode benefits from the element of surprise, and deserves to be viewed without preconceptions. If you've stumbled across this article without having watched the episode yet, read no further.
