Red Dwarf XI: Krysis Review featured image

I think it's safe to say that Krysis came with a fair bit of baggage. Out of all series XI episodes, this is the one people thought most likely to be shit, and not without some good reasons. At this point in Dwarf history, many are terrified of the the concept of the Kryten-centric story, with Duct Soup and Krytie TV weighing heavily on minds. Add to that the unenviable 'episode 5' position usually reserved for the weaker episodes and the striking visual of a Ferrari Red Kryten and we pretty much had the perfect storm of terribleness just waiting to tear through the fandom.

Shit or good, Last Day or last straw, Krysis certainly does continue the tradition of defying pre-broadcast expectations, and for good or ill the thoughts I had coming away from the episode ended up being a million miles from my expectations going in.

Well, there's certainly a lot to discuss. Red Dwarf XI has been densely packed with ideas thus far, and this episode contains possibly the highest concentration yet. With spoilers aplenty for anyone who's not yet watched the episode, here are some of what we consider to the most interesting of these ideas, neatly packaged into subheadings for your convenience. These are based on just one viewing and a quick scan through afterwards, which for the record took place following the deliberate release, as opposed to the brief accidental one.

WATCH KRYSIS HERE

FINAL UPDATE: It’s now properly, actually, online at a time when it’s supposed to be. As you were.

UPDATE: It seems like it’s been taken down, indicating that publishing it in the first place was a mistake. This thread now has the added frisson that even people at UKTV Play pace could get spoilered so tread very, very carefully as people who did catch it are discussing it openly in the comments.

For reasons that are at this point completely unknown, UKTV Play have managed to completely shit the bed by releasing Krysis a day earlier than everyone expected, mere hours before the *actual* broadcast of Officer Rimmer. This means that within the Red Dwarf fanbase there will is now a subset of people who are a whole two episodes ahead of those chosing to watch on broadcast. The mind actually boggles, but as always this here thread is your early place to the talk about the episode, so dig in everyone!

Well, what a surprise, Officer Rimmer is yet another example of an episode that has garnered somewhat split opinion since it was released online this morning, but the split may well be a lot more interesting than previous weeks by the very dint that this episode is undoubtedly unusual in many ways. Whether you like the places it goes is another matter entirely, but luckily we have our entire lives to debate to this one. In an episode crammed with points that require some talking, I've picked out some of the big ticket items.

Officer Rimmer will be strutting its way onto the interwebs at some point this very day, in which we’ll finally see Rimmer utterly failing to learn the lessons of Me2. If you want a comfy place to discuss the newest of new episodes then park yourself right here for the foreseeable future.

OFFICER RIMMER IS NOW ONLINE

As is customary by this point, we’ll be publishing our big Talking Points for the episode this evening, and following up with a more in-depth Review in the coming days. Finally, we’ll be casting the pod that we broadcast LIVE last night discussing Give & Take. It also says here in my notes that Ian would like to thank everyone who listened live and joined in the discussion last night. It’s true, he really does care about you.

Rounding out our immediate coverage of Give & Take we now present to you the archived version of this Thursday's LIVE DwarfCast, where we dissected the episode for all of its jucy, jucy kidneys. Present were Ian Symes, Tanya Jones, Jonathan Capps, Danny Stephenson, the Fan Club's Jo Sharples and an intermittently snoring and purring black short hair called CJ. Discussion topics this week include the large number of talking points generated by the episode, as well as some breaking DVD news, speculation as to how the mobile game will eventually represent the events of the episode and finally a preview of what's to come next week / today.

As the great splitting of the Red Dwarf fanbase enters its third week, those of you waiting for Give & Take to appear on broadcast television in glorious HD need not wait much longer as that momentous event will happen at 9pm (BST) tonight on Dave, Red Dwarf‘s seemingly nice but slightly weird step-dad. Once you’re done watching the episode then you should probably mosey on over to the Let’s Talk About thread from last week and have a sneak peak at at the bulk of what we’ll be talking about tonight in our Talking Points article. If you want some in depth opinion on the episode then my review is the place to be for my usual brand of post-episode giddiness.

And now, finally, since I’ve rested control over this article from the tyrannical clutches of Ian ‘Ian’ Symes I can finally give you this sentence with the correct use of capital letters in our podcast’s name, so join us for our Live DwarfCast at 10pm (BST) tonight. We’ll be doing our usual deep dive analysis on the episode and, for reasons that I am still yet to fully comprehend, encouraging you to soil us with your filthy opinions so we can read them out on air in condecending voices. Once the stream is live you’ll have a handy link up there in the top right where the terrifying countdown currently resides, plus we’ll be Tweeting about it, too, if you like that sort of thing.

tl;dr: watch G&T, listen to G&T, drink G&T.
