    Hi.

Trying to date this thing that I spent too much time using in the mid 1990s. It was definitely from some point before my Dad plunged into getting us The Internet (mid 1996 IIRC), and it was a Red Dwarf CD, that I specifically remember came from a computer fair in Liverpool. And I was a Red Dwarf fan, so it must be from some sort of 1993-1996 window. Can’t remember anything about the cover, but it was billed as some sort of ‘guide to Red Dwarf’ and it was essentially lots and lots of posts from what must have been something like a rec.arts.reddwarf usenet forum (if any such thing existed)? Anyway, I loved diving into it, and diving deep. But oddly, when we did eventually get online properly, it never occurred to me to try and find any online Dwarf even though I was Very Much Into It around those times (reading the new novels, taping every episode onto audiotapes). Was this CD a thing that anyone else ever encountered?

I’m not familiar, but I can give you a couple of leads…

alt.tv.red-dwarf was the newsgroup in question, and it’s archived here: https://groups.google.com/g/alt.tv.red-dwarf?pli=1

There’s also loooooads of ancient unofficial Dwarfy things on archive.org, and if you scroll down far enough there’s plenty of fan-made software of various types. One day I’ll get round to cataloguing it all, but in the meantime: https://archive.org/search?query=%22red+dwarf%22

The only one I had was the lousy Amiga shoot-em-up, which would be worth a write-up to see how long anyone can resist making a comparison to series VII CGI. It was only notable for randomly sampling the “they’ve taken Mister Rimmer!” exchange (in the version I had, anyway – unless it was on something else), which meant I heard that gag long before I actually saw Holoship.

I was trying to do a list of all Red Dwarf fan made games a few months back and that “lousy Amiga shoot-em-up” passed me by.

Any chance you could direct me to it online?

Here’s a video (gameplay starts at 3:45, after all the loading and amusingly having to restart): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35SebERquiI

It might be playable on archive.org (it used to be – I can’t access the site any more to check) if you trawl through with searches like “amiga,” “seuck” (Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit).

One of the stock, non-RD related SEUCK games sampled Queeg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiuJTD-lACo&t=256s

Non-game Amiga shit to waste everyone’s time:

    The Red Dwarf Demo

The Red Dwarf Slideshow (as gripping as it sounds)

has anyone done a deep dive into every RD video game, including unoffical and the mobile games etc?

I probably wrote about this before, but when I was a kid I had this idea for a Red Dwarf game that would be a 2D platform with puzzles and action, set around the ship and other locations. I wanted it to be a mix of Alien 3 (SNES/mega drive), Earthworm Jim, and Prince of Persia/Shadow of the Beast type games. I wish I at least had the ability to mock up some screenshots of how I imagine it. I want a text bar on the bottom of the screen with digitised characters and funny lines. And everything, like, an adventure with Ace, a trip to the “Back to Reality” dimension/hallucination, a new Polymorph that does something funny and original as you hunt it down…

    Earthworm Jim

I vividly remember Earthworm Jim from my Genesis days. Upon replaying it as an adult I quickly began to doubt I had ever beaten the trashcan in level one.

Having done a deep Google dive back in February, the two most complete ones seem to the be the 1996 text adventure game for MS DOS and the 1998 graphical adventure game made in Visual Basic 3 for Windows 95. The fun fact about the latter is that it was actually made by one Michael Dodson, the classmate of Yahtzee Croshaw (of Zero Punctuation, now Fully Ramblomatic) and it was in fact making competing games (Red Dwarf and Arthur Yahtzee) that got him into video game development. On a similar note, there was a short Red Dwarf demo made in Adventure Game Studio in 2007.

Me, I kinda wish there had been a Doom TC made for Red Dwarf back in the day (e.g. make the Imps into GELFS, the Hell Knights into Simulants, the Cacodemon into the Space Corps external enforcement vehicle…).

Oh, and a 2018 sound mod for XCOM 2 that got several press articles for some reason…

    https://www.pcgamesn.com/xcom-2/xcom-2-red-dwarf-voice-mod

I am always kinda perplexed by what fan efforts do and don’t get picked up by the media…

Whip it when it stomps, shoot it when it moves. EWJ was one of the defining 16-bit / 90s games in my household, I’m surprised it’s not such a huge deal in the nostalgia. But we didn’t get a console until 1994, which I guess was late in the day. It fit the lolrandom/grossout Ren & Stimpy era well, better than Boogerman that tried too hard.

Earthworm Jim and its sequel were stone-cold classics. I also enjoyed the cartoon. Brilliant designs and humour, and I loved the variety of gameplay styles between levels.

My recollection of Earthworm Jim is that it suffered massively from a platformer bugbear that’s a game killer for me – lack of clarity between what is a platform or otherwise interactive, and what is background decoration.

Hm, Yahtzee Croshaw’s comic fantasy novel “Mogworld” had a few jokes nicked from Dwarf (or at least very inspired/similar), Discworld too. I suppose they were homages.

This is something I just knocked up to show how my dream RD game would look. btw, none of these images are mine, I found the Lister and Rimmer sprites on Google, and the background is Alien 3 (mega drive).

    The “Doug Naylor Gambit”

A device used in sitcoms wherein a character loudly proclaims that they will not do something, before instantly cutting to a new scene in which they do it. I can think of at least one prime example in all of the three most recent series of Red Dwarf. Also favoured by American sitcom writers, because it offers an escape from doing anything genuinely creative so they can quickly get back to eating cheeseburgers while children in Africa lick moisture from each other’s eyeballs to survive.”

    http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/archive/20041225-20050105.htm

Seemingly Yahtzee had not heard of the phrase “bicycle joke”. I suppose Skipper raises it to an new art form though.

I did my own attempt at a Red Dwarf sprite sheet earlier this year, based on an image posted on Twitter. I have a full rotational display, but the walk cycles still need fine tuning.
I kind of was dreaming of a Red Dwarf equivalent of the 16-bit sprites Doctor Who and Star Trek got from Dalek Attack and the 25th Anniversary games.

I don’t know who this Yahtzee person is, but want to clarify for their sake that the quote was from 20 years ago.

    #294757

Yahtzee is the former narrator of the Zero Punctuation review series on YouTube before he and everybody else decided Escapist was a crappy outlet and buggered off to go form Second Wind. He’s known for his bitingly sardonic review style.

Then it’s an odd thing to say considering Doug co-wrote VI with Rob and most of VII with other writers. What bicycle jokes are they even on about? The only proper one I can think of from VI – VIII is Lister marrying the gelf.

Indeed, if anything the “lazy” sitcom trope most associated with Doug is “he’s standing right behind me” from Pete and Back to Earth.

Yahtzee’s Mogworld had the “get back in touch with a lost species to find out they had a holy war based on some small difference in their faiths” joke, only it was dwarfs, and it’s…IIRC, he draws it out more. It’s like, “we’re both supposed to wear…” and there’s some long, complicated list of the outfit the dwarf race are supposed to wear, but he ends with “they point their hats to the left, not the right like us!”. It’s a slightly different spin. I actually read the first half, laughed and enjoyed it, but never finished it for some reason.

I don’t think I’ve ever made the connection with the Cats in Red Dwarf before but this is also in the same vein as the war in Gulliver’s Travels over which end of a boiled egg should be broken.

I want a Red Dwarf game as a one-on-one Street Fighter II esque beat-em-up, with outrageous special moves. Lister can blow people away with a bazookoid like Cable in MvC2, Rimmer can teleport behind his enemies like Raiden and switch between hard and soft light, Kryten can throw his head at people, that kind of thing. You could have the Inquisitor as the final boss.

Red Dwarf CD would be modeled on Series 1, but with an additional time-travel gimmick that lets you change the future, an annoying girlfriend, and a doppelganger of the main character.

    So it’s Stasis Leak, basically.

    #295066

I don’t know, the annoyed girlfriend part sounds more like Chloe than Clare. Are you sure this isn’t just bits and pieces of Series VII clumsily cobbled together like in my upcoming fanedit where I clumsily cobble together bits and pieces of Series VII?
