I’ve never really been interested in watching it myself, but I think he is out of curiosity since we’ve really enjoyed the new Dr. Who series. I’ve caught bits and pieces of a few eps, and they seem really dark and removed from anything Who. Is it just me, or does anyone else find this a little off-putting? I’m not saying I think the show is bad or anything, especially since I haven’t really watched it…just a thought. Creator Topic Viewing 38 replies - 1 through 38 (of 38 total) Author Replies January 3, 2010 at 12:09 am #107666 ChrisMParticipant It’s intended to be a more adult show. That being said, I agree. I think they went a bit overboard in the first series in trying to be sexy and rude ‘cos it’s adult’. It was toned down to some extent in series 2 though. I overall liked it though, although it could have been better. And actually was with Children of Earth which was cracking. January 3, 2010 at 12:10 am #107667 CarlitoParticipant I’m midway through watching Torchwood series 1 having watched Children of Earth (first TW i’ve seen). Similarly impressed enough by the latest Doctor Who (another show I hadn’t watched prior) to have started watching RTD’s series 1 today, 3 episodes in. Enjoying it! January 3, 2010 at 12:18 am #107669 RidleyParticipant Start from series 2 at least… January 3, 2010 at 4:23 am #107681 GwynnieParticipant Don’t take it too seriously, and you’ll have a blast. January 3, 2010 at 1:07 pm #107701 Plastic PercyParticipant I can only echo the comments above. Series 1, like all first seasons, has a bit of trouble finding its feet. On the one hand you have wonderful stories like ‘Small Worlds’, ‘Out of Time’ and ‘Captain Jack Harkness’, but then you get stories that would only seem adult to pubescent boys. I.e. ‘Day One’ has a monster that is powered by sex and ‘Cyberwoman’ has a cyberwoman complete with metal brassiere and three-inch steel heels. By the time Series 2 and ‘Children of Earth’ came around, Torchwood had found its feet and has been consistantly good ever since. January 3, 2010 at 2:49 pm #107709 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Just watch Episode 1 and then skip to Children of Earth. The rest is so ropey, there’s no way it would still be on air without the Doctor Who link. January 3, 2010 at 3:06 pm #107710 Tarka DalParticipant You’re saying episode one ISN’T ropey? January 3, 2010 at 3:52 pm #107717 Pete Part ThreeParticipant I haven’t seen it since the original broadcast but I remember it having potential, despite the rather tiring attitude to appear cool and gritty (it’s Cardiff for fuck’s sake!). It was the first episode so I was inclined to give it some leeway, but perversely I thought it was the best episode of the orginal run. This potential was then promptly squandered for three years. Have just started re-watching the first series of Angel and it’s clear that they had no idea whatsoever about what they were making. But it’s still far more assured and entertaining than Torchwood was until CoE. January 3, 2010 at 8:37 pm #107725 ChrisMParticipant I think it’s a disservice to the series to discount most of the stuff before Children of Earth. It was certainly at it’s best there, but there’s plenty of good stuff before that. Mind you I find my reactions to a lot of programmes is less extreme than other posters. When others say ‘rubbish’ I’m usually thinking ‘could be better.’ I usually find even the worst episodes entertaining, although I’ll admit I’m sometimes wincing a bit inside. And I quite liked the Cyberwoman, although probably for the wrong reasons. Or right. Depending on how you look at it. January 3, 2010 at 8:51 pm #107727 AndrewParticipant I think there are a good half-dozen episodes of Torchwood 1 and 2 that are worth giving time to. It’s a crappy hit ratio, especially for such a high-profile show, but it’s something… January 3, 2010 at 9:57 pm #107741 Nick RParticipant I liked the early series 1 episode about the fairies in the garden. A couple of years ago I read an online chat transcript with Terry Pratchett, in which he said that that episode had been his favourite thing about New Who and Torchwood so far. I was actually quite surprised that he’d pick something so close to a subject he’d covered himself. Also, “Countrycide” had a brilliant title – can’t remember much about the quality of the episode itself, though. I stopped watching series 1 not long after that. I think I saw the first couple of episodes of series 2, and they were an improvement, but I didn’t keep up with it. The LHC radio show last y… I mean, in 2008, didn’t really make a big impression on me. I regret missing Children of Earth, though. January 3, 2010 at 10:27 pm #107745 Ben PaddonParticipant Torchwood series one is quite bad but it does have a couple of good episodes. It’s also bristling with brilliant ideas, albeit brilliant ideas that are executed poorly. Series two is better overall – I loved Captain John. I always thought that having Torchwood grounded in one location would work much better for season-long stories rather than “monster of the week” affairs. “Children of Earth” delivered on this somewhat, but I’m much more interested in the kind of story arcs that Angel and Buffy were doing once they’d hit the ground. January 3, 2010 at 10:44 pm #107750 AndrewParticipant > I liked the early series 1 episode about the fairies in the garden. Lots of nice stuff in that ep, but it’s utterly ruined by the fact that the Torchwood team do NOTHING in it. They know, they see, they watch – but the events and outcome would have been pretty much the same if they’d never shown up. Which is a bit duff, story-wise. > Also, ?Countrycide? had a brilliant title – can?t remember much about the quality of the episode itself, though. Shockingly bad. Awful Owen/Gwen ‘fucking’ dialogue and a story that ends like that Scary Door episode in Futurama: “Most evil thing in the universe: It turns out it’s man.” > I loved Captain John. I could never get past the lazy creative process there: ‘Get the Spike actor…and have him bring the Spike character with him’. January 3, 2010 at 10:50 pm #107751 DessieParticipant >’Get the Spike actor?and have him bring the Spike character with him? Yeah it was Spike, but still great to watch. I’d love to see this character appear in Dr Who. January 3, 2010 at 11:03 pm #107754 Tarka DalParticipant What’s the concensus on Being Human btw? Only the ads for Series 2 are really pulling me in. I’ve yet to see any of it, pilot or first series. January 3, 2010 at 11:21 pm #107760 AndrewParticipant It’s good. Watch it. January 3, 2010 at 11:33 pm #107762 ChrisMParticipant I really liked Being Human. It had an ok pilot. They made some changes for the series which I think made it better. (They dropped the gothic vampire thing for example, which, while ok in’ it’s own right has been a bit overdone. It’s still considired ‘in continuity’* though. Shame they didn’t include it in the box-set.) I was disappointed they lost the original girl who played the ghost but the new actress turned out quite endearing in her own right. I felt they overdid it a bit with some deviant sexuality which got rather disturbing (which was the whole point I guess) but that’s certainly not all the show had to offer by a long shot. The finale was brilliant. I wish Russell Tovey would tone down the squealing and over enunc-ia-ting though. I’m looking forward to the new series. *or ‘canon’ if you prefer that word. January 3, 2010 at 11:35 pm #107763 Tarka DalParticipant This deviant sexuality… Are we talking a Torchwood style intepretation i.e wax crayons or something more considered? January 3, 2010 at 11:57 pm #107766 ChrisMParticipant As way of example, (small spoiler here), there’s a vampire porn video with a vampire woman and a human man. And vampires don’t appear on cameras in this world. It did serve the plot though but it rather shocked me at the time. (And made me laugh if I’m honest.* It was very, very dark…) Don’t let that put you off though, it’s a very small part of the programme is about. *What’s that when you get two different emotions that make you look like a dog with peanut butter on the roof of it’s mouth? January 4, 2010 at 12:19 am #107767 AndrewParticipant > Are we talking a Torchwood style intepretation i.e wax crayons or something more considered? Something more considered. I wouldn’t say it had anything big to say on the subject, but it’s handled intelligently. But then, I wouldn’t say it was especially overdone with ‘deviant sexuality’ though. At all. The scene being described was (to my best recollection) about consenting adult sex, videoed. Which is a long way from deviance. The vampires murdering people, and the sex that goes along with it, IS what you might call deviant – in that the killing ain’t consensual – and in some (not many) instances that’s connected to, or directly in the course of, sex. But that combination is par for the course given nature of any vampire’s implicit subtexts. Videotaping a murder for selfish and nefarious purposes is deviant. Straight sex ain’t. Doing it for the wrong reasons isn’t fabulous, but that’s a long way from suggesting the show overdoes it with deviant sexual content – that seems to me an an oddly puritanical huge-over-statement. I don’t think it informs the nature of the programme at all. But it’s best left until you’ve seen the show. Which, if you haven’t, I recommend ya do. (Oh, and The End of Time’s Sinead Keenan has a recurring role – and she has great comic, and dramatic, timing.) January 4, 2010 at 3:41 am #107777 ChrisMParticipant It was the entire snuff thing I was really thinking of as deviant rather than the sexual act itself. >Videotaping a murder for selfish and nefarious purposes is deviant and that. (Although I’d see filming it of itself is pretty deviant and the sheer casualness of the encounter as is porn as a whole, but that’s more a personal opinion I guess as a lot of people find porn and casual sex acceptable.) In hindsight I think it’s fair enough it was in the story. It just rather shocked me at the time is all. Although the air humping was amusing. And there were other things too involving vamp on vamp rumpy pumpy while feeding, but, well, being vampires, that’s understandable and in context not too gratuitous. >I don?t think it informs the nature of the programme at all. And I agree with that. As for puritanical…. maybe a little if that’s not a contradiction in terms. I’m and old fashioned boy. Not a big deal. As I said, I liked the show. One of my favourites of the year in fact. Definitely watch it. January 4, 2010 at 7:28 am #107778 redhead85Participant Being Human is a fantastic show – I love the way it swings between comedy and black drama. Just as something is making you laugh, something really dark can leap in, and vice versa. Does anyone know the release date for series 2? The ads I’m seeing keep saying ‘Coming soon’. January 4, 2010 at 9:12 am #107780 AndrewParticipant > a lot of people find porn and casual sex acceptable Well yes. January 4, 2010 at 12:23 pm #107782 ChrisMParticipant Does anyone know the release date for series 2? The ads I?m seeing keep saying ?Coming soon?. It’s on 10 January BBC3. January 4, 2010 at 1:06 pm #107783 AndrewParticipant Oh, and another Brit genre show that’s well worth checking out: Misfits. Sooooo much better than I expected. Really funny and sharp. One of the best shows of the year. January 4, 2010 at 2:06 pm #107784 Seb PatrickKeymaster Misfits passed me by (well, the talk and publicity and hype and everything didn’t – but actually watching the show did), I really need to sit down and plough through the whole thing. Same with Being Human, actually – I loved the pilot, so should really watch the rest (although by the same token was a bit miffed about the recasting. Everyone says it works, but I thought the pilot cast worked brilliantly). January 4, 2010 at 4:31 pm #107786 ChrisMParticipant >Oh, and another Brit genre show that?s well worth checking out: Misfits. I’ll second that. I wasn’t sure how I’d take it to start with what with the chavvy girl (who turned out to be a favourite character by the way) and the annoying Irish kid (who turned out to be very funny) but it was very good. >Everyone says it works, but I thought the pilot cast worked brilliantly). Here’s the thing, they both worked but in different ways. If you watch it I think you’ll see what I mean. January 4, 2010 at 5:52 pm #107789 CarlitoParticipant I’ll second Misfits as a pleasant surprise. The hype turned me off, but word of mouth eventually made me check it out. Watched the first five episodes on 4oD in one night, and the finale as it aired the following evening. Well worth checking out. January 4, 2010 at 6:08 pm #107791 redhead85Participant > It?s on 10 January BBC3. Thanks Chris ^__^ > Oh, and another Brit genre show that?s well worth checking out: Misfits. My friend’s partner is in it – she plays Alisha. She’s rather hot in my honest opinion. Egyptian descent. January 4, 2010 at 7:15 pm #107798 CarlitoParticipant > My friend?s partner is in it – she plays Alisha. She be hot! January 4, 2010 at 7:56 pm #107803 ChrisMParticipant >Thanks Chris Your welcome. I’m hoping they haven’t changed the date. (I doubt they will.) >My friend?s partner is in it – she plays Alisha. Wow. Small world. Yeah, I know, such a clich?d phrase but it surprises me how often that turns out to be true. And yes, Alisha is attractive. January 6, 2010 at 7:42 pm #107868 GwynnieParticipant Wait, wait, wait, go back to the talk about deviant sexuality… ^_^ I haven’t seen Being Human yet, but on the vampire-human sex front, watch True Blood. There’s at least one sex scene in every episode. It’s a little bit deviant in the way that he drinks her blood whenever they have sex (but only a bit). Torchwood is fantastic for gay storylines, by the way. I showed my friend this video to get her to watch it – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xekxd9WgAlQ ;) January 6, 2010 at 8:16 pm #107871 ChrisMParticipant >I haven?t seen Being Human yet, but on the vampire-human sex front, watch True Blood. Heh, yeah, I followed that too. And the rumpy pumpy got a bit ridiculous even considering it’s an adult show, although it was amusing. I enjoyed it a lot though. Very different from Being Human, apart from mixing horror and comedy. And supernatural people trying to lead ordinary lives. (Ok, maybe they have more in common than I thought, but the tone is different.) I quite liked the idea of vampires having ‘come out.’ January 7, 2010 at 10:29 pm #107915 GwynnieParticipant Yep, showing that humans just have to discriminate against SOMEONE ;) January 8, 2010 at 2:13 am #107923 Ben PaddonParticipant It’s true, we do. We vilify and ridicule that which we perceive to be different and abnormal. January 16, 2010 at 11:27 pm #108195 genericnerdyusernameParticipant I haven’t seen any from series 2 of Being Human or the last episode of Series 1 yet, but I have to admit it is bloody hilarious sometimes. You know, when it’s not intense. Actually, even when it’s intense it’s funny. I’d give examples but I don’t want to spoil any scenes for anyone because if you haven’t seen BH yet I advise you to temporarily devote your life to seeing an episode. It’s THAT good. Anyone who argues with me is just, well, wrong. January 16, 2010 at 11:42 pm #108197 genericnerdyusernameParticipant I’m just posting again to point out that I didn’t see the Being Human post until just now, so sorry if my last post was in the wrong thread, and while I’m at it, sorry about using the word post THREE times in the same sentence. By the way… “Also, ?Countrycide? had a brilliant title – can?t remember much about the quality of the episode itself, though.” Countrycide = The killing of Piers Morgan. I’m not too late to have made that joke, am I? Then again, is anyone ever too late to quote I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue?
