    Mine are:

    “Observation Dome/Goodbye Holly”

    “Ace’s Theme” (Series IV)

    “High Noon”

    “Rimmer Being a Hero”

    “Gunmen of the Apocalypse Theme”

The Gunmen credits theme is so fucking good man. And the Ace Rimmer funeral music is so good it carries the extremely dated CGI making the scene just as emotional regardless.

Yeah if we’re allowed credits music too then I’d definitely have that one. The way it segues into the regular theme is superb.

I find the VII music too over-the-top generally. Only one I remember liking was from Kryten’s dream sequence in Duct Soup that was like an Amiga fantasy game.

The only problem with the Gunmen theme is it reveals how much the theme tune has in common with that of Z Cars.

I love the library music they used a few times in VII, firstly at abandoned Dallas scenes in Tikka, mostly famously at the end of Ouroboros, even if it is pretty much directly nicked from the outro of ‘Piezo’ by Autechre.

Observation dome, of course. Hmm, I should have a run through the rest to see which are my favourites.

Probably a good time to repost my two hour ambient Red Dwarf mix:

‘Space Walk’ from Confidence & Paranoia, the Prince-esque ‘Party Time’ from The Last Day, and the Gunmen theme.

Shite, how could I’ve overlooked ‘Space Walk’? Another cheeky 2001 callback.

‘Holly Says Goodbye’ perfectly distilled the feelings of loss and reflection in under two minutes.

https://youtu.be/hAknqxPukAI?t=446 – That little guitar led bit that comes in when Lister first brings out Frankenstein. Just a lovely, melodic variation on the main tune.

The Cat priest theme is another really good one.

This makes it sound like Cat Priest was a Saturday morning cartoon.

I’m now hearing the Duck Tales theme with ‘Cat Priest’ as the title.

Lost my faith and gonna die – here in, the hold

All my life I’ve served a lie – I’m blind, and old

    My eyes grow moister…

    l’ll renounce Cloister…

    Cat Priest! Woo-oo!

I burned my hat and gave up cool, I’m…

    Cat Priest! Woo-oo!

    Now I’m a slobby dying fool, I’m…

    Cat Priest! Woo-oo!

The world’s your oyster! Watch behind you!

Here comes Cloister, out to find you!

What to do? Just pass away now…

    Cat Priest! Woo-oo!

The background in Holly’s SOS call in season 1. There’s a nice .melancholic tone to it.

The entire ‘Stoke Me a Clipper’ cold open. The earnest hero music against the absurdity of Ace sky-surfing on a crocodile.

With you on that one. Though it does sound more like a scratch track rather than the final cue. I think it would carried a lot more weight if it had better synths or if they had the money, some real instruments.

I do love that horn. It really gives emphasis to the vast size of the ship – even if it is a giant rust bucket.

I’d be curious to find out the synths/equipment Howard used throughout Series IV-VI, I love those velvet ambient passages.
