    Firstly, short and sweet:
Was Ace’s Ship called Wildfire in LH or just Backwards?

Secondly, and hopefully lively, Did anyone else have trouble getting into LH?

I’m only up to Chapter 4, Time fork.
I like the start and I get the idea that rest of the novel may or may not be happening in Listers head (No spoilers please, Ok I know about Michaels existence, and that Dave and Krissie set up home, but not how they get there.).

I think my main problem is The presence of Kochanski, Not in an I hate her way more, Hmmmm…

Ok, The scenes lifted from the eps. like them in the other books, it’s interesting to see how they are used. But in this one, the red alert scene.
It’s classic Television, even the Daleks like it, but it seems oddly placed in this book and threw me out of the action add that to the fact that he gave some of the lines to Kris, seemingly, to me, to justify her presence/remind us that she’s there. I doing so it upsets the flow of the gag.
It makes an already miss place scene, IMHO, just not work.

I haven’t read far enough in to find out if I like This Kochanski yet, in my head she a weird mix of C.P. and Chloé.

I Think I’ll go back to the beginning of Time fork and give it another go.

I got through the First three so fast, I guess I’m just dis-hearted that I’m struggling with this one.

    Peace.

    Phe

Backwards does leave things more open for sequels, which is why you can just write a sequel to Backwards and leave Last Human be. And I’m pretty sure it would be close to impossible to combine Last Human and Backwards into something coherent, even if actual people were doing it.

    Last Human
    featuring
Lister, Kochanski, Evil Lister, Mcgruder, other sundry Space Corp Marines and Cyberia prisoners, Kryten for a few pages and an implication of Kochanski’s pregnancy at the end?

    Am I missing anyone?

Yes, I mentioned this throughout the book club – not only is it the only novel which has more than one regular human character, there are four main human characters. Doug clearly loved the title so much he had to stick with it (or it was contractual).

I always read Backwards third. Last Human could be a sequel to Backwards, and also has a very definitive ending. So it’s more satisfying that way.

I wasn’t assuming you could actually generate something coherent out of it – just wondering how AI would strain to try and do so. It would probably read like Ulysses or a Thomas Pynchon novel or something. Or Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I do like the ending to Last Human. Rimmer was ridiculously brave and gained the respect of his son. Lister and Kochanski have hope for kids. Kryten and Cat survive. I assume Cat survives. I don’t remember him being in the book much tbh! The planet itself sounds idyllic and they’re free from all of the awfulness they’ve faced in the book.

Also, Craig Charles does a much better job of reading Last Human on audio than Rob Grant does on Backwards (which I found a very difficult listen and chose to not continue with).

A tweak to the end of Backwards so that it’s a universe with Kochanski, Kryten and Cat, and then a tweak to The Last Human that removes any reference to Lister and Kochanski coming from the backwards universe, one could follow the other.

are Lister and Kochanski’s kids going to reproduce with their siblings?

Don’t be silly. There’s plenty of Dolatgans knocking about.

Is Lister supposed to have put the sunglasses on the skull for a laugh? Did someone else?

The evil Lister maybe. It’s reminiscent of that bit where Lister finds the dead crew who it turns out evil Lister killed, and Kryten’s head has been cut off and a cigar stuck in the mouth.

That’s the plot that I’m most interested in, to be perfectly honest.

    Quoting your gif, Warbodog.

Tbf Doug would probably tackle sci-fi incest more tastefully than Rob tackles penis torture.

Either way, they have form. That’s how The Holy Mother’s children procreated.

And *anyway* there’s Ritaskabin and Michael to throw into the genetic pool, too!

When he put his mind to it, he did recall two other Cats who used to be around, but most of the time they’d avoided each other. One of them, he reckoned, had probably been his mother – because she wouldn’t sleep with him. In fact, she’d got quite angry at his approaches and hit him on the head with a large frying pan.

There was something about Helen, a certain quality . . . He’d known Helen in reality, too. Who was she? The Game had made her younger. Mentally, Rimmer aged her face.
    She was his muh . . .
    She was his muhhhhhhhhhh . . .
    She was his mother.
    He’d married his muhhhhhhhh . . .

The entire setup of Last Human hinges on Red Dwarf being on the other side of the Omni-Zone.

And here I was hoping to open this up to three pages of Warren Zevon memes…
