I dont think I had the INTERNET when Big Breakfast was on. What truly superb morning telly that made.

It was a show that depended completely on who was presenting it. Chris and Gaby were great, Johnny (with Denise or Liza) was brilliant. There were a lot of people who were awful though. Paul Tonkinson, Donna Air, Sharon Davies for example.

Never saw it either, I’m afraid. It was only on for about two weeks but it was an extension of Little Brother so I guess the style would be quite similar to The Big Breakfast.

The Big Breakfast was stupendous. It did lose something once Chris and Gaby had both left, […] but at its best, it was wonderfully made telly, that had a fun about it that most programmes don?t even attempt to do any more.

I was thinking about this the other day – things like Going Live used to be just fun programmes – you’d often hear the crew laughing with everyone else, no-one really took it that seriously and it was just a way to pass a couple of hours.

You just don’t get that these days, and it’s truly missed…

I absolutely agree. I saw an interview with Trevor and Simon recently and they said that when they were briefed by the heads of the Beeb about the kind of material they should prepare for Going Live, they were told ?don?t worry about aiming it at or appealing to the kids?just make sure it?s funny and not excessively offensive.?

Can?t imagine that happening these days. I think kids know when they?re being patronised and they can appreciate comedy on more levels than many assume?which is why I adored Blackadder and Red Dwarf when I was a nipper.

It’s a shame Trev and Simon went off-form a bit by the end – when they started, they were brilliant in every possible way. I wish more of their stuff was commercially released – there’s a huge body of work that’s never likely to be shown again. (I think they should show hilights of Going Live! late-night BBC THREE, personally. It’d be far better than most of the crap they put on, and I think it’d get the viewers.)

I think I probably would have found so-called ?anarchic? stuff like Dick and Dom patronising when I was a sprog.

Aw, I like Dick and Dom a lot – and I think their stuff was about just doing what they found funny too, rather than talking down to the kids. In Da Bungalow was like old-school Saturday morning telly for me, although I didn’t watch it enough as I was never up…

On BBC TWO, yes – including Basil’s Swap Shop. Which I can’t comment on, not having seen it – it sounds like a great idea, but unfortunately the recent Basil Brush Show revival was excerable.

But yes, it was nothing like as good as the original, considerably toned down. It had to be really, the amount of smut and innuendo that went on above the heads of the kiddies was amazing (and still makes the orginal very very funny).

Plus they turned Basil into a smug, snide twat.

Dick and Dom are ace. Morning Wood? Brilliant.

One thing he was right about in the interview- he didn’t get funny lines in series 8.
