There’s already a Sonic version of Me2. It’s the 6th episode of my abridged series Xonic S in which the antagonistic and abrasive character of Tails is made sympathetic through the exploration of his traumatic past and deep-seated issues.

There doesn’t need to be a literal crossover because that would be dumb.

Well, I was actually meaning an official, fully-licensed, canon crossover which would see both universes merge for one epic story, whereby the Red Dwarf crew meet the characters from the Sonic universe.

    #255845

I’d quite like to see Red Dwarf do a crossover with the Jawscvmcdia universe.

I understand Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Wars, maybe Mass Effect or something, because it’s all set in space and translatable, but a crossover with a Mega Drive character that runs fast and collects golden rings, you’ve lost me.

That’s on the same level as me asking for a canon cross over with the Pringles mascot because I enjoy crisps.

Spoilers: Starbug’s outside one of the lower windows above the exit, go down and to the left for the Boys.

Your suggestion that the Sonic universe is as simple as a video game about a cartoon blue hedgehog running around and collecting rings, is like saying that Red Dwarf is about four guys on a space ship. Whilst, yes, the concept might have been this simple at launch, so was Red Dwarf’s. As time has moved on however the Sonic universe characters have been developed and the concept and has been greatly fleshed-out.

I, personally, believe that if there was a Sonic crossover that it would see Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy team up with Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and Cat to defeat Dr. Eggman. It could be that Eggman creates some kind of interstellar spacecraft that threatens both the lives of the Red Dwarf crew, as well as Sonic and friends. The Red Dwarf crew have to team up with Sonic to defeat Eggman. Tails would probably team up with Kryten, as they are both fairly intelligent and have similar personalities. Lister would be with Sonic, Knuckles with Cat, and Amy with Rimmer. As part of an amusing B-plot Amy develops a crush on Rimmer but, much like Sonic, he wants nothing to do with her! In the end, Red Dwarf harnesses the power of the chaos emeralds to defeat Eggman’s ship, and everything is back to normal… for now, at least.

In this universe, also, the effect of the Sonic characters jumping into the Red Dwarf dimension has resulted in them aging by about ten years, something that is eventually counteracted by them returning to their own dimension later on.

Remind me, is Sonic the blue hedgehog that goes around collecting rings? Used to struggle with that when I was young, couldn’t get my head around the concept. All a bit Oxbridge for me. I mean, I really tried to get my head around the ‘him being blue’ thing, but I lost it at the rings. And then someone said that the ‘hedgehog’ element was literal and I just thought ‘leave this to the academics, I’m out’.

I’m wondering if this is potentially going to be the last Red Dwarf with the current cast/crew? The cast themselves (and Doug) are all boomers who are not getting any younger, let’s be honest.

Have they got one foot in the grave or can they keep up with a famously fast hedgehog? Make your mind up.

I liked the one where Sonic repeatedly harrassed a woman online after being told to stop several times. They could do a crossover with that and the Sex Offender’s Register.

Everyone do what makes them happy, but I’ll be honest, reading a serious pitch for a crossover between Red Dwarf and some anthropomorphised woodland creatures who collect golden rings and eat chili dogs, fills me personally with an ineffable sadness.

As does comparing a TV show and novels, written to tell a story, to a videogame tie in, made only to sell videogames to children.

But each to their own etc

The Venn diagram crossover of Sonic/Red Dwarf fans is surprising, but they’re basically incompatible and this would annoy more fans on both sides. Why has Red Dwarf gone embarrassingly childish (again)? What’s this cheap Brit show about old people I’ve never heard of? Your crap pitch is just a formulaic Sonic story with Red Dwarf shoved in, there’s nothing Red Dwarf about it.

Things like The X-Files/The Simpsons and The X-Files/COPS were successful crossovers with different shows, but at least those appealed to the same general audience. And X-Files was malleable in tone already, veering from deadly serious to zany every other week by that point. Red Dwarf’s never gone full Saturday morning children’s cartoon. When it almost did, that was everyone’s favourite two-parter.

Though apparently Supernatural did an animated Scooby-Doo crossover that was well received. Never watched the show, so I don’t know how that turned out.

If you want to show that the Sonic universe has moved on and been “greatly fleshed-out” since those early days, maybe come up with a plot that isn’t lifted straight from the early-1990s Sonic games (with Red Dwarf characters pointlessly tagging along like computer-controlled Tails).

The Mega Drive was out in the UK for fully eighteen months before the SNES came out. It’s no surprise that it stole a march. Also, from advertising to packaging to aesthetics to range of games, it was by far the more desirable object. Without the cultural memory of having grown up with the NES the way Americans did, Mario alone was never going to capture the imagination.

(I love the SNES, it’s got some of the best games ever made and its versions of Street Fighter pissed all over the Mega Drive. But it’s really not hard to see why ’90s UK kids grew up so loyal to Sega.)

I’m glad I turned up slightly later with all my new-fangled Crash Bandicoots and James Bonds, and more importantly, in the burgeoning days of piracy, which enabled my not-particularly-rich parents to give me many, many more games than I otherwise would have got if he had to actually pay for them all. My dad and my uncle would buy one game at Christmas, giving my cousins the original and me the copy. I got Crash Bandicoot 2 in 1998 and it took me until 2007 to get 100% in that game, so it had quite the replay value. I actually got an original copy of Spyro 3 in 2000, with a big chunky grey box and a picture on the disc and a manual and everything.

My Dad went so far as to make custom covers for Crash Bandicoot 3 and FIFA ’99 using clipart, and to this day they are some of my most (only) cherished possessions. It’s actually quite funny how not-very-good the Crash 3 one is, but it was clearly made with a lot of love, and the Fifa ’99 one actually looks pretty good, just definitely not official.

I love Sonic, but then you get… this… side of the fandom, which makes me ashamed to be a Sonic fan:

I think anyone who uses the word “fandom” to should be at the very least prosecuted, and possibly, shot, unless they’re saying how shit a word it is.

Horrible word, the “tumblr blog full of anthropomorphised wolf versions of Lister and Rimmer” of words.

yeah, I guess I really never knew about Mario as a kid, it’s only as an adult I really got how classic the Mario games were. As far as I was concerned, Sonic was THE platform game mascot.

“I got Crash Bandicoot 2 in 1998 and it took me until 2007 to get 100% in that game”

I guess technically I’m still trying to catch a fish and defrost that frozen world in Zelda Ocarina of Time. Even if I haven’t popped it in for a decade.

speaking of the Sonic fandom…there was that funny Sonic Boom episode that had a stereotypical nerdy Sonic fan come to town. Seemed to be based partly on notorious ones like Chris Chan (not sure we’re ready to talk about him here though…)

I like how Jawscvmcdia is creeped out by people sexualising cartoon animals, but not by his own creepy stalker crush on Katydid.

I can’t believe he’s still here. There are antisemites in the Labour Party who’ve been kicked out faster than this guy.

With respect, this is supposed to be a thread about Sonic the Hedgehog and I’d appreciate the conversation being kept on-topic.

    Hard-light Rimmer with Hattie’s Holly? Definitely non-canon.

I hate it on a moral level, but creatively it’s pretty good.

The flashback in Blue confirms that he wore the puffy blue outfit back on Red Dwarf.

I think it’s shit. Starbug has never had a rectangular door, Holly wasn’t under the alert sign and Lister eats cornflakes not rice krispies.

    They should be (more) ashamed.

It’s strange that VII started and ended with continuity heavy sequences and yet had some of the biggest continuity errors of the whole show. I suppose it can be waved away as ‘poorly remembered’ on Lister’s behalf.

Yeah, let’s nip this in the bud before it gets any worse and move on.

Jawscvetc, I was fine with you signing up for a new account because we never properly banned your old one, we deactivated it at your own request. But if your presence here continues to cause nothing but hassle and consternation, with no upside whatsoever, it won’t be long before I make a permanent decision for you.
