It’s obviously a sci fi Flashman, but having read the first few chapters, it definitely feels like it could be an unofficial Ace Rimmer novel. The writing style is very simple, mainly dialogue with the briefest, screenplay-like description – and from what I’ve read so far, I can’t imagine it having the pathos of Dwarf’s most thoughtful parts. It is funny though. I get the feeling that it was written with a possible TV show in mind. This one is about the culture clash of him going to a hippy planet and having to transport a hippy/vegan woman (and seeming possible unlikely love interest). He also has a comedic alien warrior sidekick (elements of John Carter there imo). Also, the main hero is literally a pilot for “The British Empire” in a fictional future. It’s not really steampunk so far. Just sci fi with them having a Victorian manner/style. I’m not sure how they will get into the potential darker/colonial aspects of that as it goes on. It seems they’re at war (and on the defensive) with some threatening alien race, who I’m sure will eventually be unveiled as misunderstood in some way (even in the first chapter there’s a hint that Smith can’t fully trust his superiors). anyway it seems funny so far, if a bit frothy. I can imagine this author doing a Dwarf novel if Doug opened up the franchise (google says he’s done some Warhammer stuff too). Creator Topic You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
