I decided to get this model printed because of the interesting combo of styles. Obviously it takes most of its cues from the Season VIII incarnation but has a hull covered in greeblies, like the OG, Season V and Dave versions. Unlike the Season VIII version it only has one asteroid, like the OG/V/Dave version and seems to be the result of an impact, rather than being deliberately placed.

I had to get a friend to make various adjustments to make it printable but it came out really well at 30cm in length. I am crap at fiddly little details which is why the name plates are blank atm. The asteroid might need more work too. I’m pleased with the overall colour of the ship.

I normally use Shapeways but went with iMaterialise on this because they’re cheaper.

I’m sorry if the pics aren’t very good. I’m having one of my wobbly days. I get small to huge seizures when I stand up too fast, or, on days like this, just whenever I stand up lol. Taking a good photo is thus rather like trying to do the ironing on the Titanic.

Very sexy. I like it. If I saw this in somebody’s house I’d freak out.

Glad you like it. I’ve also got a couple of good Starbugs too that are 3D prints. One Starbug I got on Etsy hardly needed any work, just weathering. It’s mostly classisc but with Dave era bumpy bits. What I really want is a skutter. I’ve got a life sizes R5-D4, a K-9, a BD unit and a DRD but I could definitely make room for a skutter in the family. Unfortunately I haven’t got the skill to build one myself. The most complex build of my own was my TARDIS console but when you break it down it only required some really basic woodwork techniques to make whereas a skutter has custom molded parts. I wouldn’t know whete to begin. I could perhaps do a redesigned version to simplify it but I’d prefer a proper one.

Yep. Some friends think I’m not just fahrbot but magra-fahrbot with my collection of pretend AIs but I’ve always loved robots and computers from sci-fis. I also have a Hal 9000 on my wall and half-sized Orac on my shelf lol. A skutter is conspicuous by its absence.

I mean, I got that one. I had to look up what a BD unit was…

Done some weathering in that equatorial trench and some more work on the asteroid. I don’t know why but the rest of the hull looks darker in these pics but it isn’t.

And yes, much time collumn needs dusting lol.

‘Not bad. Ramscoop still isn’t big enough.’

‘Sir, honestly: any bigger and you’ll have a balance problem.’

I turn my back for five minutes and you start publicly discussing the size of my ramscoop. I’ve only been active on the forum for a couple of weeks.

You’re right. We should have at least bought you dinner first.

    Damn right.

That’s the rule I set with my GP. He asked if I’d ever had a prostate examination and I told him in no uncertain terms he’ll need to take me to a good film and a candle lit meal before he comes near it.

Back on the subject of the ship… I have a question. Obviously this model takes its main dimensions from the remastered model but there’s something I’ve never heard… is it still 3 to 4 miles wide but much longer, or is it still 6 miles long but not nearly as wide?

The windows always throw me because they’re too large and there are too few rows for a ship so big – I think the letters on the nameplates are supposed to be about the hight of the Empire State Building so even the opening shot of Lister painting them is out of scale – though considering you can’t paint in space that’s the least of it.

Requiring a good film might be asking a bit much.

I don’t know… steer clear of super heroes and romcoms and I’d probably be alright. Maybe a good horror.

I’m considering adding a dish like the one on the Back to Earth version. I liked that addition for some reason. What do you think? I’d add it to one of those blocky buildings on the mid dorsal hull, where the refinery was on the remastered model.

I’m stuck in bed, the demon has returned, or whatever Jesus said. It’s a regular think involving a lot of pain and a lot of painkillers. Anywho, to avoid feeling completely useless I added some more details to the mid section of the model, where the refinery is – according to concept art for the remastered ship. Just a few little antennae, some domes, a dish etc. My guess is that the ship is so huge that the JMC and the Space Corps backed it with various facilities – like the lab that was working on the matter paddle, to make as much use of the vast ship as possible. Rather than just moving freight. So I see the dish as. being for study wibbly and swirly space thingies. The antennae would be for different communications channels so that everything doesn’t have to go via the Drive Room. One might be JMC business, another for official Space Corps stuff, one could be personal – for the crew to call home etc., or perhaps one could be for business, like the vendors on the ships shopping mall (I’m sure it has one in the books… or it could have been the US pilot…). Anywho, that’s enough over thinking. Sorry about the picture quality but it’s the best I can manage in bed.

Is the block with the H the hologram simulation suite?

It came with that so I don’t know. Maybe the entire ship is a hologram and that’s its H lol. If it is the hologram suite then it’s bigger than Kirk’s Constitution Class Enterprise.

That one passed me by I’m afraid.

    I have a question…

You may have noticed in the pics that the model looks long and thin. In fact, its proportions look similar to the Corgi model. The thing is… it shouldn’t, or, at least, it doesn’t look that way in person. It looks shorter and so fatter. It looks a good 4cm longer in some of the pics. Is it something I’m doing wrong or is it just unavoidable when photographing models like this? My only camera is my phone so it’s nothing special.

I’m VERY interested by this thread. Excellent work Cardinal_Hordriss! You’ve made me want to try (for the 4th time) to build a new Red Dwarf in 3D for a printed puzzle I’ve been after making for ages!
Fun Fact: The logo for DJXX which I did with Jez Harrison has no back to it! We ran out of time to finish it, so in true Model Unit style, we shot it in a way that hid anything that we didn’t want the camera to pick up.

That looks great. I’ve always wanted to go to Dimension Jump but never had the confidence.
