Clearly my meme was was simply too radical, too unconventional, too mould-breaking for the thread to accept.

(I had tried to edit it to delete that second image and replace it with the third, which might have been part of it.)

The second line does get a follow up laugh but it does feel like most people got the joke already

It’s not

It’s not

I don’t quite agree. “Now I know why dogs lick their testicles” is the punchline, and the set up is him eating the dog food. We didn’t need the follow up line to understand. It’s pretty obvious that when Lister brings up dogs licking testicles, it’s not a non-sequitur, it’s related to the thing he just did.

However, what this proves to me is that “explaining the joke” isn’t necessarily bad. As long as it’s performed well, it can ride the laugh wave and make the overall flow of dialogue feel more natural, which is what happens there.

I do think the first couple of times I read/saw the scene, my mind went more to ‘dogs have such low standards for taste, no wonder they’re not deterred from licking their dirty, smelly balls’ in the brief gap before getting the explanation. Similar but different.
