But it started in the 90s on Paramount comedy, even Jessica Hynes/Stephenson at the start of her career was in it alongside future Red Dwarf guest star Sarah Alexander. Then it transferred to channel four and had 4 series. I had never seen it in full, previous uploads had audio issues or missing episodes. I’ve now found the whole lot uploaded to YouTube. Bizarrely in series 3 I have discovered the alternative truth that (Craig Charles played by Ben Miller!) was a war time poet, in tribute to his real life skills of course. Later in these short surreal juxtaposition sketches the duo work their poetry up into creating episodes of Red Dwarf. How utterly bizarre. It starts at 15.30 in the above link if your bothered to check this oddity. It’s probably only funny in context of their wider shows approach anyway. But yeah have a look if you want. There are bits that baffle me to what they find funny. Their nude vets sketches feels now rather Austin powers, but at the time was probably sub hale & pace to be honest. I’ve seen series 4 and nothing carry’s on in that but I havnt seen the final episode of this series 3 yet in its full broadcast lenght. I thought it was absolutely amazing at the time, but obviously there is and was better. And Armstrong is like Chris Barrie, but he’s got access to print interviews, rather than just writing it up on his own HTML editor. Did they think Craig *wrote* RD?The things I remember from A&M that I thought were the Funniest Things I’d Ever Seen: A family are sitting down to watch a video tape from their cousins in Australia checking in and saying how things are going. The kids are watching. Then the tape cuts off into static and you see the parents going at it, the woman in front and the guy behind. Both are wearing pig masks. “Go on, give it to me you big pig man” says the woman. The kids are horrified. That absolutely blew my mind. It was way beyond anything I’d ever seen growing up with more tame things I’d have watched with my parents.A scientist is looking into a microscope or similar. He’s checking things and then looks up into the camera. “Oh my god” he says, “it’s going to piss down”. It cuts to him in the street trying to get people in. He rescues a woman and her kid. The kid says “Are you going to be my new Daddy?”. Again, hilarious. It felt like the plot of every family-suitable adventure film we’d ever watched as a family. And this was spoofing it. Amazing. Jack Force and Chuffy. Outstanding. I remember it so well. The two guys at a job interview being interviewed for one job. They’re asked to tell, essentially, a good story about something that happened to them. One tells an hilarious story that everyone loves. The other pauses, in horror and slowly pulls out “I….smelt…my….dead dad”.Again, I’d never seen anything that weird.Also…Nude Practice….But Armstrong is still an absolute twat. I’m enjoying the cop duo Parsons & Lampkin… and Parsons mate Steve. Like the professionals or Starsky & Hutch and then a bloke just tagging along from the all night garage. With Series 3 – as with Red Dwarf VIII I was gone from the family home. Hence my memories of Red Dwarf VIII involve watching odd episodes either back visiting my parents, or in someone’s room in Uni Halls of residence or, on one triumphal occasion, being in the IT lab late in the evening, and we managed to turn the monitor that showed the external CCTV cam into one that was showing BBC1. So I watched one episode tiny and in black and white. Wish I could remember which one it was. I certainly saw Cassandra when it was shown, as a lecturer referred to it at a seminar a day or two later. Which is understandable if a little harsh. Haha! Given my mother’s sense of ‘humour’, if she watched it, it would have been the first Dwarf she’d have enjoyed.
