I last posted about this back in 2012, but life got in the way before I had a chance to progress a sale. I worked at the Visual Effects unit as a temp over Easter 1989 (during my first year at uni), and was part of the team tasked with chucking out the remaining bits of the original Red Dwarf model. This was after the shelf fall – as I remember it fell from around 15 feet up in the props store – top shelf might not have been the best place to put it! It was rather heartbreaking to have to chuck it into a skip, but I managed to ‘salvage’ this bit in a binbag. I’m open to offers on this piece, please PM me via the RD forum if you’d like to bid. I would rather it went to a Red Dwarf fan than just sell it to Prop Store or similar outfit. If I still have it come April I’ll look at bringing it to Dimension Jump for the auction. Cheers, TheMagpie. May 27, 2021 at 2:10 pm #267004 millzderpParticipant Pretty random to start this thread again after 5 years, but did this sale ever go ahead? May 27, 2021 at 7:02 pm #267039 Captain StarParticipant I acquired it a few year ago. It’s slowly being sensitively repaired & completed as much as possible with most of it’s missing kit bash details identified & replaced with vintage parts. Its torn & missing corners have also been faithfully reconstructed. May 28, 2021 at 1:02 am #267041 Paul MullerParticipant Which part was it? Looks like the picture links are dead. I recently scratch built a Red Dwarf, and the original model has always fascinated me since I was little Same here, I also have a Scratch built model of it (just needs painting & the Ram Scoop building). I’d post progress pics but, I’ve not used Photobucket since in it went nuts with fees. I’ll have look to see if my account still works. I wouldn’t know where to begin. May 28, 2021 at 3:41 pm #267052 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant Also question … is it made of wood? Which is looks like in that pic. Because I’d always assumed it was parts moulded from plastic in some way. May 28, 2021 at 4:42 pm #267053 DaveParticipant Can I see a tiny model Lister on the F there too? Excellent. May 28, 2021 at 4:55 pm #267054 Captain StarParticipant Also question … is it made of wood? Which is looks like in that pic. Because I’d always assumed it was parts moulded from plastic in some way. Its layered sheet styrene & plasticard with panel lines scored across the surface. The kit bash parts are from several 80’s “Robotech” kits (Orguss II & Battroid Valkyrie). I had a bit of luck as someone on another forum was building a replica of Picard’s Stargazer model from TNG & I recognized a part reused on the ship. Once I new the type of kits to search for… Robotech, Xabungle Walker Machines, Macross etc. I identified a lot of parts used all over the ship. The white name plate is cartage paper with fine pen/pencil line work & scored panel lines.(the left side still need gumming back down) No tiny lister just a small reddish square with minor damage. Naturally the lettering itself is off limits to touch ups. May 28, 2021 at 6:32 pm #267055 Jonathan CappsKeymaster it’s incredible how mild it all seems in comparison to … well just the world in general let alone what we’ve seen on here since. The key difference now is we no longer let accounts like that take root. The last year or so is the best this place’s community has been ever (imo). May 28, 2021 at 6:44 pm #267056 Captain StarParticipant What happened to the forum on the official site? it seems to have disappeared. May 28, 2021 at 7:26 pm #267057 Jonathan CappsKeymaster GNP decided to close it a few months ago. The Fan Club don’t have theirs anymore, either. We stand alone in the night. Trying to put together a reasonably accurate 3D model of the thing at the moment so it’s nice to have a proper reference, as there are so few photos of the original model out there, and they’re all shite quality. May 29, 2021 at 5:40 pm #267104 Captain StarParticipant They popped up on ebay about 4 year ago. I didn’t win them, but did manage to get scans. May 29, 2021 at 5:53 pm #267105 Dax101Participant Oh wow. I wonder what the bits of tape on the model is for. May 29, 2021 at 6:05 pm #267106 DaveParticipant Excellent pics. Thanks! Stick it on a model, creates a mask. Series VIII Norman: It’s masking tape. The kind of tape you might use to mask something. Like if you were making a model. Of Red Dwarf. Which is what that is. A model of Red Dwarf. May 29, 2021 at 6:29 pm #267114 Paul MullerParticipant That’s brilliant, thank you! God, it’s amazing what you can find on eBay. Oh and there was me thinking it might be being used to remove strips of paint, giving the appearance of that part of the ship needing painting. Looks like Software glitch, the numbering #267100 fits between my other posts in May Looks like my “failed” posting attempt spent 3 months buffering in the system.???? August 29, 2021 at 2:56 pm #269134 GlenTokyoParticipant Since the thread has been bumped, perhaps the bits of tape are probably covering light leaks to be fixed. August 29, 2021 at 4:00 pm #269135 Captain StarParticipant I think the only part of the model that had lighting were the sides. There was black paint residue on the back of the panel, lifted from the main body. They probably built the basic shape of the ship, then sprayed it black to prevent light bleed, before cladding it & drilling window holes . There is extra weathering, repairs/damage & touch ups visible in the additional video taped FX shots in series 2. The masking tape might have been for that?
