Saw it today, glorious. Oh, the violence. Haven’t seen the like since the heyday of the 80s actioner. Go and see.

Any 2000 AD fans amongst us? I’ve never got into it but would welcome suggestions of a starting point.

I read 2000 AD! They’re starting a new set of stories this coming week, so you could jump on there. Other than that they recently finished the Day Of Chaos mega epic in the Judge Dredd strip (I say recently it was a few weeks ago now.) It’s pretty long, but I’m sure they’ll collect it in GN at some point.

Anyhow. Yes. I watched Dredd yesterday. I agree, it was very good.A bunch of us from the 2000 AD forum went to watch it. A couple of the guys turned up in Judge outfits and posed for photos between showings to help add a bit of publicity for the film, etc. All good fun seeing kiddies reactions, etc.

Saw it today and really, really enjoyed it. I’d post more as to why but typing stuff on my phone is a mission but basically, for the type of film they were doing, I don’t think it could have been done much better. Gutted that they’ve talked about possibly doing a prequel next as Olivia Thirlby was brilliant.

I’ve been cautiously looking forward to this and following the build-up with much anticipation. Very glad people have enjoyed it as some early reviews were far from great.

    It’s currently got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes…

As a violent, r-rated film about a fascist cop it’s always going to have its detractors but I’ve read plenty of reviews this week (as someone who’s job entails looking through all the newspapers everyday) and if there’s one thing I’ve noticed it is a lot of 3 star reviews for this film that read like 4 star reviews.

Yea I did notice a few reasonably positive reviews with star ratings that didn’t really tally up.

It’s chuffing great is what it is. Completely gets the character of Dredd perfectly. I’d probably prefer to see a bigger, more over-the-top kind of story done with him, but that can come later – in terms of laying the groundwork and setting up a perfect, ripped-from-the-page version of the character to go on and use in future films, it’s perfect.

It’s not a perfect film otherwise, but it’s so thrillingly enjoyable a lot of its problems can be glossed over. But that might also explain why objectively, some of the star ratings end up being lower even if the reviewer enjoyed it on a visceral level.

    (Also, star ratings suck anyway.)

Here, incidentally, is an interview I did with Karl Urban a couple of days after seeing it: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/dredd/22534/karl-urban-interview-playing-dredd-comics-and-more

Tee-hee. Found a drawing I did when I was 16, was weaning myself off the Dandy and Beano, and had started reading 2000AD. This is somewhere inbetween.

It doesn’t open here until the 21st, but the trailer looks spectacular.

This is the best summer blockbuster season I can remember, despite Prometheus. Though it’s hard to be objective when I have no recollection of what movies came out in which years.

OK, 1999 was pretty awesome too: http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2012/06/top-10-summers-at-the-movies.html

So, I picked up the latest issue of 2000AD, which seems helpfully geared towards new readers.

Is good, some nice eccentric sci-fi concepts, gorgeours artwork….it still feels a bit like I’m crashing a party that’s been running for 30 something years, especially in strips like The ABC Warriors.

    But I’ll stick with it.

The Dredd strip is particularly bonkers, about a space defence laser’s relationship with a pet budgie. It’s called “The Death of Dan-E Cannon”. Some cursory interweb research reveals that Danny Cannon was the director of the 90s Stallone Judge Dredd film, so I presume it’s an injokey comment on how the new Dredd film blows it out of the water.

Danny Cannon’s from Luton, it seems. Blimey.

It just saw it – The baws. Anyway some of the action music as stuff kicked off reminded me of the action-y music in the Red Dwarf ‘Justice’ episode – which is a bit of a coincidence? no?

    ‘s true ye know!

It’s a good issue. I found ABC warriors weakest in that there’s a lot of chatting and not a whole lot happens, but i don’t dislike it. I love the artwork.

The new story: Brass Sun is particularly promising.

Does anyone knows why the theme-tune from Snuffbox comes up several times in the film? I’m not complaining, it’s just an odd choice.
