First episode of Red Dwarf seen?

Not sure if this has been a topic … probably, but I can’t find it very recently, so here goes : What’s the first episode you ever saw, if you remember, and what about it made you watch more of the series?

I’m pretty sure mine had to be Me2. I remember the gazpacho soup factoid, which is not something I knew before then, but it could’ve also been Future Echoes with the droid fish. It was 18 years ago, so memory’s only a little muddied. ;-)

Anyway, it was an odd, hilarious little show and I was a big Trek fan, so I wanted to see what this Trek-parody-type show would do – and I kept watching and bought the first book shortly after (it was still being sold as a new novel at the sci-fi bookstore I frequented in a nearby town).

Red Dwarf first came to my attention when a then-mate of mine mentioned that ‘Back To Earth’ was starting soon. I dismissed it, as he likes a lot of weird shit. A short time afterwards, whilst channel-hopping I saw the Comedy Connections special on Dave, and later caught a repeat of ‘Back To Earth: Part Three’. I didn’t really understand it, but was intrigued. I later saw ‘Timeslides’, and then a few more repeats of various episodes from III-VI (and a bit of ‘Stoke Me A Clipper’, I think), before buying Series I & II on DVD on a whim in June 2009. By August, I had everything on DVD.

That’s OK. I’d seen the preceding 54 episodes and I didn’t understand it either.

Also forgot to mention that around the same time, that same mate got the ‘All The Shows’ anniversary DVD set for his birthday. I saw it in his room and flicked through it, looking at all the pictures etc. – that’s what made me watch the ‘Back To Earth’ repeat.

Wow, I think you’re the first person I’ve heard of that discovered the show with Back to Earth. That’s excellent!

Wow, never realised I was so unique! :P

It was nice watching everything for the first time over a period of about two months.
