Linking to soft porn would make me feel as grubby as Craig did after making the episode, but you can google Tubi Lexx P4X (in the UK, anyway) if you’re similarly curious about this Dwarf-adjacent curio.

I hadn’t got around to it before now, only seeing some early episodes of the show. But after 25 years on the low-priority list, I might as well accept that I’m never going to feel like bothering with all of it and can just dive context-free into season 4, episode 3.

It starts in media res, as it’s entitled to, but they fill us in on basically the entire backstory of the series and characters anyway. Do they do that every week in case new viewers are tuning in for guest stars?

It mostly works as a self-contained lousy B-movie, with a very different and valid take on sci-fi comedy to Red Dwarf that will work for some people. If it’s reminiscent of any episode, it’s Krytie TV. I shan’t bother watching more, but glad I bothered.

Alternatively or supplementary, there are behind-the-scenes insights about Craig freezing his bollocks off in the Canadian winter and a bit from Hattie here:

The wardens’ side hustle of selling the women prisoners’ used underwear to pervs was a good joke, if ick. Hattie’s accent and Craig not bothering with an accent were funny too.

The robot head is like if Talkie Toaster was in every episode.

Ah yes, series 4, in which the ‘I’m not sure if I should be laughing at this or not’ vibe really comes to the fore. “Ick” sums it up well. It’s a very fun episode for their appearance alone.

It wasn’t until the last episode that I realised how impressed with the writers I was – I genuinely cried. At a show that mostly consists of episodes like this. The serious side was done so well and the main characters became somehow really sympathetic despite everything working against that.
