I don’t see the problem with Timewave

This episode seems to get a lot of roasting on the forum and I’m not really sure why. I thought the satire on Twitter safe space culture was on point. The characters were so flamboyant, because that’s how people behave – acting all sugary sweet, justifying all their flaws as “quirks” while taking no responsibility.

I’ll grant you that it’s not the funniest episode ever, but I’ve also seen a lot worse. It’s very middle of the road for me.

For me its got very little to do with messages or insensitive humour. Its got more to do with the fact i cringed all the way through it. Its not funny. Its all the worst pieces of Red Dwarf humour all wrapped in one episode. From the tutting guy to johnny vegas rubbing his nipples.

My thoughts when watching the Cat talk about giving the Polymorph a blowjob in Can of Worms. 
Doesn’t help that almost every joke in that episode is just a retread of something from a previous episode (Craig doing his googly-eyed shtick, GELFspeak, the string game)
Timewave aims for something, at least. I’ve no idea why we have one Polymorph fan service-heavy sequel, let alone two…

Can of Worms is bad, but at least it’s not out right offensive. 

The execution isn’t brilliant but Cat giving birth to baby Polymorphs is at least in the realm of Red Dwarf.

it’s really disappointing we were promised an episode where Cat meets another cat and then it turns into a Polymorph episode 

After that how Cat behaves is hard to watch. The pink chav tracksuit. He can’t kill his own children, and then suddenly he can with the weirdly low pitched “a mamma always knows her kids” line

there’s also a really good idea about personality tucking which is wasted on an episode based on a create that can also suck out emotions.

The personallity tuck was there so Lister would have his give a shit emotion taken away. i dunno its been a while since i watched it. And that would force them to seperate so they could get into that polymorph stand off scene. Its a bit inconsistant since Lister should kill them all in that scene judging by the logic that made them seperate in the first place.

I suspect thats all that machine was there for. Otherwise why else would they run away from lister… and eachother

There is an easy to forget line in there about how the morphlings’ grip on the Cat diminishes every time one of them is killed. Lister wiped out a few of them, so that explains the change. Doesn’t make it any better as an ending, nor does it change the weird performance, but it explains it.

The hormone thing only lasts until they’re mature enough to feed on his emotions, which they do, & then he saves the day with an action movie one-liner that also completely explains what he’s doing.

I Don’t See The Problem With Can Of Worms

I never saw the problem with it either, but somebody did mention they were expecting a “Cat meets another cat” episode, and I guess you could be disappointed if you went in expecting that and it’s not really what you got. But I wasn’t expecting anything going into it other than an episode of Red Dwarf, so I was quite chuffed really. That’s exactly what I was looking for. My distaste for Timewave is that I went into it expecting an episode of Red Dwarf and got SHITE.

Even if that might have ended up being in XII, I saw a comment on G&T correctly theorising about the pineapple in the XI opening titles. I was disappointed to be spoiled, but would have been disappointed by the Polymorph reprise anyway, so it probably cancelled itself out. I thought the episode was okay.

I *think* the rumour originated with Ian Boldsworth mentioning a polymorph (in relation to an episode he warmed up for) on RHLSTP and then the spoiler was the fucking Radio Times giving the game away on the day of release

I only read it very late in that G&T comment. I’d listened to that RHLSTP at the time (saying he’d asked the Red Dwarf audience if they knew what a Polymorph was and was surprised/annoyed that some didn’t, even though it was basic level knowledge?), but hadn’t realised it was a relevant spoiler detail… for some reason.

Can of Worms is a less than the sum of its parts episode to me, lots of stuff I like but it feels about as first draft as Red Dwarf ever has.

Can of Worms is maybe the ultimate example of the oft-cited problem with Dave episodes i.e. too many ideas to do justice to them all in half an hour. The personality tuck machine is an unnecessary element. It’s a frustrating mess of an episode, especially the last few minutes, but overall I enjoy it. Lumping it in with Timewave is way harsh.

As a gay guy myself I didn’t really feel LGBT culture was being criticised at any point. Gay doesn’t automatically mean feminine and flamboyant. If anything I thought it was more a critique of toxic positivity. 

That said it’s not an episode I found particularly funny or entertaining. Usually even if Red Dwarf isn’t doing comedy well it’s still decent sci-fi and so remains watchable. This episode felt like something thrown together at the last minute because a previous script fell through.
