Those who know me, know I kinda like Lego. Like, a lot.
Recently I built the Milky Way Art set (which is fantastic by the way). See attached.

And it got me thinking about a similar idea. I’ve always wanted to build a Lego Red Dwarf. Who hasn’t, right?
The complexities of building a structurally solid hexagonal prism with Lego has always kinda seemed out of the realms of possibility form a mere amateur Lego builder. Plus, Stephen Deaville did an excellent job already.
But the flat Art greebly Art Style I saw in the Milky Way really inspired me to try something a little different.
So I decided to make just a zoomed in name plate. Like so…

WIP, obvs. So I apologise for the crudity of the model etc etc.
Stylistically, I just wanted to try and evoke the busyness that the Model Unit et al. brought to the ship.

I had to get Lister in there somehow, and so he’s painting the F of course
and just for funsies I made a little Skutter and Toaster
But yeah, this is a project I fully intend to complete. I’m trying to keep to certain limitations like weight, cost etc. But thankfully the program I’m using (Bricklink Studio) is great with the stats for that stuff.
Feedback, contributions and suggestions for Easter eggs welcome!
Here are a couple of things I’m trying to maintain when thinking about the build.

    – Not to have too many things pop out from the build too much, I should perhaps set a brick height limit away from the base to rein that in.

    – Try to have a reason for things to exist on the build to an extent. I did try and just fill sections with just ‘busy’ sections, but it didn’t look quite right (You can see that on the build plate covered in white pieces)
    – I want to try and incorporate things that might not necessarily be true to where they would be on the ship. More a stylistic ‘best of’, such as a section of the plate being struck by a bit of meteor, for instance. (That’s the un-built section on the bottom left, possibly)
So yeah, this is my current Magnificent Octopus.

This is awesome! I really like all the greebling and detail. Excellent job!

If you want the full Series X bigature experience, you should make a full Red Dwarf as a companion piece and make sure the large name plate section in no way matches it.

    Absolutely lovely.

Maybe somewhere you can stick in another little Lister and Confidence, doing their cha-cha-cha dance.

You could add one of these tucked away somewhere for the box containing the hologram discs.

It’s hard to think of other stuff that’s on the outside of the ship. A recreation of the bunkroom window shape maybe?

Very cool. I like how some of the F is a duller red because Lister hasn’t painted that bit yet. Nice touch.

Thanks for all your supportive messages. They are gratefully appreciated.

I like the idea of putting things on the ship that reference certain events that happened on the exterior.
    Two ideas come to mind:
    – A polymorph of some description and
    – Bits of confidence’s spacesuit for that authentic Dwarf ‘ick’ factor.

I’m really glad that came through!

I’m wondering about grunging up the ship somewhat, but I think that might have to wait until I have finished the majority or I discover a way to have the rust visible in places. I can’t give myself too much to concentrate on at once, or the whole process gets a bit… noisy.

I like the idea of adding a box, but that particular piece isn’t big enough to fit in any disk-like Lego pieces, but I’m definitely doing this!
There is a newspaper stand that features in another build that is literally to my right as I type and it is perfect for such a scenario. See attached.

    Oh yeah, that’s perfect.
