I’m sure I’m not the only person who gets this, but I’m noticing whenever someone makes a new thread and it gets replies before I’ve seen it, if I click on the “x new” button (x being the number of messages sent) it always sends me to the first reply rather than the first post, meaning I have to pop back up to the top to see it. I guess it sort of makes sense in a roundabout way, but surely the first message in the thread would count if you’ve not read it yet? I’m guessing it’s a WordPress thing.

I’ve noticed that too, but as it’s only a minor inconvenience it hasn’t occurred to me to mention it anywhere.

As you say, it’s probably due to First Reply /= First Post, and there may an assumption that if you’ve never read a thread you’ll use a non-“oldest unread reply” link. But on G&T, using the “Recent Forum Posts” sidebar section is more convenient than going to the general Forum page first, even if you need to scroll up by 1 post when you arrive at the thread.

Ditto.  I refer to it in my head as a minor annoyance, because it does actively *annoy* me – but not enough to make me do or say anything about it before now.

So is this “That thing that happens when someone makes a new thread”‘s own thread?

I honestly thought at first you were just referring to the inevitability of threads being driven off-topic or descending into inane memeing.

Talking of which, what does everyone think of Series VIII?

I mean seeing as it’s gonna happen anyway I didn’t see any reason to call attention to it. Could make an interesting follow-up thread though…

Can we have a thread where we put all the suggestions for a new thread? I need to say something about Jeremy Corbyn.

That’s the No Idea For A Thread, pay attention.

    #296787

Idea for a Thread has now become an Idea for a Thread.
