So I’m gawping at the Tongue Tied wiki with nothing better to do and I see the entry about the Aigburth Arms. I’d forgotten it was a real pub and is seen as the birthplace of Red Dwarf. I’m going on a pilgrimage to see it.

The other “Genesis” location would be the cottage up a “Welsh mountain” at which Rob and Doug wrote The End.

Does anyone know the location of said mythic mountain? Or even the cottage itself?

Seriously though, it’s a good question. As far as I know the most that’s ever been said publicly about that was in the Smegazine interview from a few DwarfCasts ago, with the story about driving back from the pub and trying to run over a rabbit or something like that. But as to the location I don’t think they’ve ever been more specific than the thread title.

The real question is where they were when they saw Dark Star and then had the “someone should do a sitcom like that” conversation stood either side of the car.

Close – it’s Sale. I have vast swathes of the Six of the Best CD memorised. It could well have been the Odeon, which was apparently the main venue in Sale in the mid 70s. https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/2315

“…Red Dwarf pilot script went through some of its many drafts in a Welsh mountain-top domicile owned by Doug Naylor’s father…”

That narrows it down a little, I suppose. Not a holiday destination, but an owned home.

But who’s Doug’s Dad? Can we get a name? Google says we can’t…

Douglas Rodger Naylor[1] (born 31 December 1955) is an English comedy writer, science fiction writer, director and television producer.”

Can we do anything with this?

I’ve used methods and found that Doug’s Dad was Leslie “Les” Naylor who was born in 1922 and passed away in Guildford in the mid 2000s. I don’t know if that helps anyone find his Welsh cottage up a mountain. I’ve not had any luck, certainly!

Who was from Guildford, after all.

Unfortunately Guildford isn’t in Wales or we’d have it sorted.

Wales turned out to be somewhere in the vicinity of Wales, and not from Guildford after all.

That strikes me as good research. Someone might now how to find properties formerly owned by Lesley Naylor.

You wouldn’t want to go to where it all began? Have you been to the Aigburth Arms?

This Dwarfcast might be worth a listen.

I think that if we commit to thoroughly doxxing every single person who has anything to do with the show, it should put the wheels in motion for a special pretty quickly.

I more meant if we’re at the stage of doxxing grampy Naylor we might need something new.

Make sure you get a hotel near the pub if you’re not wanting to spend a lot on taxis, it’s right in the middle of a residential area and close to absolutely fuck all else.

Make a new special or we’ll report you and Rob to the police for drunk driving on a Welsh mountain!

Spoiler: I bet it’s not even a mountain.

North Wales apparently only has six mountains. I bet it was just a Big Hill.
