I’d forgotten it was a real pub and is seen as the birthplace of Red Dwarf. I’m going on a pilgrimage to see it. The other “Genesis” location would be the cottage up a “Welsh mountain” at which Rob and Doug wrote The End. Does anyone know the location of said mythic mountain? Or even the cottage itself? As far as I know the most that’s ever been said publicly about that was in the Smegazine interview from a few DwarfCasts ago, with the story about driving back from the pub and trying to run over a rabbit or something like that. But as to the location I don’t think they’ve ever been more specific than the thread title. The real question is where they were when they saw Dark Star and then had the “someone should do a sitcom like that” conversation stood either side of the car. Manchester March 10, 2025 at 7:13 pm #303320 HamishParticipant The United Kingdom. March 10, 2025 at 7:14 pm #303321 Ian SymesKeymaster Close – it’s Sale. I have vast swathes of the Six of the Best CD memorised. It could well have been the Odeon, which was apparently the main venue in Sale in the mid 70s. https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/2315 March 10, 2025 at 7:40 pm #303322 DaveParticipant March 10, 2025 at 11:04 pm #303326 JenuallParticipant I live in Wales and can confirm that we have mountains. I hope this has been of help March 11, 2025 at 12:16 am #303327 TechnopeasantParticipant I live in Alberta and can confirm you do not (comparatively). Not a holiday destination, but an owned home. March 11, 2025 at 11:15 am #303338 AsclepiusParticipant But who’s Doug’s Dad? Can we get a name? Google says we can’t… March 11, 2025 at 11:16 am #303339 AsclepiusParticipant “Douglas Rodger Naylor[1] (born 31 December 1955) is an English comedy writer, science fiction writer, director and television producer.” Can we do anything with this? March 11, 2025 at 11:24 am #303342 clemParticipant I live in Alberta and can confirm you do not (comparatively). March 11, 2025 at 11:36 am #303345 AsclepiusParticipant I’ve used methods and found that Doug’s Dad was Leslie “Les” Naylor who was born in 1922 and passed away in Guildford in the mid 2000s. I don’t know if that helps anyone find his Welsh cottage up a mountain. I’ve not had any luck, certainly! March 11, 2025 at 2:05 pm #303352 TechnopeasantParticipant Who was from Guildford, after all. March 17, 2025 at 4:12 am #303474 MoonlightParticipant Wales turned out to be somewhere in the vicinity of Wales, and not from Guildford after all. Someone might now how to find properties formerly owned by Lesley Naylor. Have you been to the Aigburth Arms? March 18, 2025 at 10:17 am #303505 DaveParticipant Have you been to the Aigburth Arms? This Dwarfcast might be worth a listen. Enjoyed your review of the new Nazzaro btw. March 18, 2025 at 10:47 am #303509 DaveParticipant Cheers! March 18, 2025 at 11:59 am #303511 AsclepiusParticipant God we need that new special soon I think that if we commit to thoroughly doxxing every single person who has anything to do with the show, it should put the wheels in motion for a special pretty quickly. March 18, 2025 at 12:31 pm #303512 Jonathan CappsKeymaster You wouldn’t want to go to where it all began? Have you been to the Aigburth Arms? I more meant if we’re at the stage of doxxing grampy Naylor we might need something new. Make sure you get a hotel near the pub if you’re not wanting to spend a lot on taxis, it’s right in the middle of a residential area and close to absolutely fuck all else. Make a new special or we’ll report you and Rob to the police for drunk driving on a Welsh mountain! Make a new special or we’ll report you and Rob to the police for drunk driving on a Welsh mountain! Spoiler: I bet it’s not even a mountain. North Wales apparently only has six mountains. I bet it was just a Big Hill. March 19, 2025 at 4:15 am #303544 TechnopeasantParticipant I bet it was just a Big Hill.
