Merry Christmas.  I’m enjoying my present of the young ones bluray 40th anniversary edition.

    Spoiler warning for next post.

Gloriously the disc three video nasties section contains a rescanned version of the film insert of Chris Barrie’s sketch where prisoners are departing for Australia and chris plays a ships officer.

We see more lines and performance from Chris than in the broadcast version and a deleted second officer turns to speak to him played by Chen/warlock himself Paul Bradley!

Easy to see that the jokes cut might have been a little too rude for bbc2 at the time.  But it’s fun stuff to see. Lots more to enjoy, as a madness fan I’m looking forward to the work edit of Sick and Suggs commentary on that episode too.

I either forgot Chris Barrie was in the Young Ones or just never noticed it was him in that scene. Either option is bizarre.

Norman Lovett also turns up in the second series of Young Ones and I think Lee “Paranoia” Cornes does as well (since he tends to turn up at least once in just about everything)

I saw Red Dwarf before I saw Young Ones so it was a fun little surprise to see Holly with a body

I just VERY LEGALLY acquired some copies of the episodes off this release (no extras unfortunately) and I have to say – for shitty, blurry early 1980s videotape this doesn’t clean up half bad.

I sure wish Red Dwarf could get such a treatment, but alas that’ll never happen.
