With just four or five months, ish, until the start of the series, the UKTV publicity machine is spluttering into life with the release of the first publicity photo from Red Dwarf X

Four cunts in a spaceship
Click for a larger version, if you like that sort of thing

It shows the four main cast members pulling comedy ‘shocked’ faces in a room which may or may not be Red Dwarf’s Drive Room. Hint: it is. This is, of course, the first chance for those who didn’t attend the recordings to get a good look at the costumes for the new series. Rimmer is just pure Rimmer, with the same blue tunic he wore in Back To Earth. Lister has his classic leather jacket on, with a scuzzy t-shirt but no black shirt betwixt the two. He’s also sporting a neckerchief and perhaps the most amusing of the four comedy faces.

Now, The Cat’s hair has been glimpsed before now, but it’s the first time that particular costume has been seen. It’s a subtle, sombre number – multicoloured zebra print jacket with a bright green furry collar. We can also get a good gander at Kryten’s new shoulder hoops, the only major modification from his previous get up. The mask looks lovely here – we had our reservations about it at the earliest recordings, but this photo shows it off beautifully.

We’ll have to leave it to those who weren’t at the recordings to speculate as to the finer details. Here’s a hint – Lister is carrying a large glass jar. Why?

Remember, our spoiler policy allows anyone to share their theories about things that they don’t know, but please don’t spoil the fun by confirming or denying things that you’ve witnessed for yourself.

  • >Here’s a hint – Lister is carrying a large glass jar. Why?

That’s what he packs his ham salad lunch in.

  • Love the message on the photo lol. and this photo looks great. i must say they’re doing a perfect job with the teasing. never too much too soon. :D

  • Although Red Dwarf has always done silly faces there is a disturbing ‘ghost of VIII’ about Lister here.

  • Rimmer’s costume looks like it suits him significantly better now than it did in Back To Earth, and I now see people’s concerns with Kryten’s mask. He looks oooold, almost as if he’s aged with the crew

  • The Sun being the twonks they are have decided an old episode of Dwarf that is scheduled for Friday is the new series… sigh…

  • >Rimmer’s costume looks like it suits him significantly better now than it did in Back To Earth

Well, it’s a different costume. And a much better one, I think.

  • Sexy.

Not entirely sure about the undisguised LCD TVs dotted around, though…

Could at least have stuck some sci-fi greeblies thereon.

  • Very cool photo, nice to finally get a photo with no monitor blocking view. have to admit finding Kryten angle in either photo not the best, makes him look bit off and very pale. looking forward to photo with regular happy Kryten! like Rimmers look, but why did they reprint the badge, didn’t it used to be more Gold in colour, now seems more Silver with hint of blue in middle. Listers looks same, though that neck garment makes me think of Hammond of Top Gear! Cat is just cat, nice look. Can’t wait for the obvious High-Res version to appear…

  • There’s a couple of things about Kryten’s outfit that seem a bit odd this year. I did think this back in January, but now that I’ve seen it again, I must say his, what, collar, I suppose – looks a bit weird. Maybe that’s just me.

And the hoops on his shoulders.

*slaps self for being too fussy before someone else does*

Shut up, Bromley, it looks great.

  • Yeah, to me, they seem more unnecessary than anything else – what are they for, grabbing Kryten by the shoulders and shaking him when he gets a bit too hysterical? (which I hope won’t happen quite as often in this series as it did in 7) – but I’m just so relieved that they didn’t give him that horrible post-6 pouty look that I’m not all that bothered by the hoops. Not the most flattering picture of the new Krytie mask, mind, but others have been posted here which were very reassuring.

The only thing that really bothers me about this pic is the Cat looking like the overdone, overmade up, Rimmer Experience version of himself (and, if I’m honest, not unlike an aging drag-queen). That said, if the stories and jokes are well-done and well-delivered, then what the characters look like won’t matter so overmuch anyway. :)

  • I don’t mind Kryten’s shoulder hoops. The neck does look odd though. His mask looks fantastic, it would seem to put to bed the major problem people seemed to have with the new getup when it was filmed.

    Rimmer’s outfit looks absolutely perfect.

Is that shirt Cat is wearing the same one as in ‘Back to Earth’ Episode 2 and 3?

  • Not entirely sure about the undisguised LCD TVs dotted around, though…

In person and when fully animated believe me it’s really not a problem.

  • Love this picture.

Can’t believe the number of sites saying the show starts tomorrow. I commented on The Sun article, and It’s been changed now.

  • Have you got any links to any, Thomas? I’m curious to see how far it’s spread, and whether any sites that really should know better have perpetuated it.

  • If you read the link, It states that the original headline said ‘starts tomorrow night’.

  • I dunno why, but it really bugs the piss out of me when people say that Rimmer is wearing the same suit from BTE. It’s different… nrrrgghhhh.

  • D’ya know – I’m more annoyed about criticisms of how It doesn’t look quite the same.

I LOVE the evolution evident here! It’s quintessentially the same, but It’s stamping a unique identity on the series. I can’t praise this look enough. Cat especially. Love love love It!

  • I dunno why, but it really bugs the piss out of me when people say that Rimmer is wearing the same suit from BTE.

    Well, I am SORRY.

It is a cock-up on my part though. I just don’t seem to have the eye for these sorts of details – I looked at it, thought “it looks the same as BTE” and didn’t consider the fact that there might be changes. Whereas if a single prop is in a different place from one shot to the next, I pick up on it in an instant.

  • Not bad, not bad! The mask is alright if a little big around the mouth area. Though all the Kryten masks look pretty dodgy in stills compared with in fluid motion.

    Rimmer – perfect. Lister – perfect. Cat…smooooooth! :D

One thing…why are Rimmer and Kryten sitting at two old supermarket checkouts?? ;)

  • > I dunno why, but it really bugs the piss out of me when people say that Rimmer is wearing the same suit from BTE.

It’s a different colour, even. A much darker shade of blue.

  • Yeah, that’s not the same tunic Rimmer wore in BTE. This one is a different weave, and a more somber color. Suits him pretty well (as does the gray at his temples – hey, he can have an aging program).

  • Downside of this is we get more people doing articles saying ‘Back to Earth’ copied League of Gentlemen. I wish those fucking cunts would fuck the cunt off to fucking cuntania. I just had to have a go at one because it annoyed me so much (I said that League and Red Dwarf must have ripped off Clerks The Animated Series).

  • Regarding series X, do we know any episode titles yet?

Having seen episode 2 recorded (but having no clue whatsoever of its title, if it even had/has one yet) there is a potential episode name which seemed obvious to me which would probably get a bit of a roar from long time RD fans and would make perfect sense. Maybe too obvious though.

  • Now that you mentioned it, recall reading the possible title Lemons somewhere a while ago, didn’t know if it had stuck. If it has, wonder if it’s a possible indicator of one-word episode titles throughout?

  • Having seen episode 2 recorded (but having no clue whatsoever of its title, if it even had/has one yet) there is a potential episode name which seemed obvious to me which would probably get a bit of a roar from long time RD fans and would make perfect sense. Maybe too obvious though.

I’m guessing that’s a three letter title? If so then yes, that is absolutly the title to go with.

  • > Now that you mentioned it, recall reading the possible title Lemons somewhere a while ago, didn’t know if it had stuck. If it has, wonder if it’s a possible indicator of one-word episode titles throughout?

I know that at the time of shooting episode 6 had a two word title. I do like me a good single word episode title, though.

  • I’m really unsure about Cat’s costume. All the others look great. They look like proper outfits made out of real clothes. But for some reason, I think Cat’s looks like a cheap ‘costume’.

I thought the same at the filming and hoped it was because it was just a cheap outfit and that he was going to have a few outfits throughout the series….hence the need for them to be cheap. I think it’s the cheap looking fur that doesn’t quite go with the fabric design that makes it look….cheap and false.

Reading other peoples opinions, I’m sure I’m on my own with this opinion though.

With this being released today, I’m assuming we can guess what Seb’s report will be about tomorrow?

  • > I know that at the time of shooting episode 6 had a two word title.

Would it be spoiler-ific to reveal what that was?

  • Would it be spoiler-ific to reveal what that was?

Even if not, I’m pretty certain it would have been disclosed in confidence. By the same note a few of us know what the title was (at the time of recording) for episode 4 but wouldn’t put it online.

  • > Even if not, I’m pretty certain it would have been disclosed in confidence. By the same note a few of us know what the title was (at the time of recording) for episode 4 but wouldn’t put it online.

Well, in this case it was James Bull having a crafty look at a script on one of the podiums when we were filing in, but yeah.

  • Well, in this case it was James Bull having a crafty look at a script on one of the podiums when we were filing in, but yeah.

Oh wait, did he mention that when we were talking to him straight after the recording? Now you say that it rings a bell.

  • He did!

Under cover of darkness, shadowy figures gathered and told tales of briefly glimpsed shooting script titles.

  • Cat had a completely different costume in Episode 1. Maybe he has one for each ep?

I love this pic and think they all look great. :)

  • Having seen episode 2 recorded (but having no clue whatsoever of its title, if it even had/has one yet) there is a potential episode name which seemed obvious to me which would probably get a bit of a roar from long time RD fans and would make perfect sense. Maybe too obvious though.

Does it begin with an E or an F? Or a 5…

  • Does it begin with an E or an F? Or a 5…

There is a one word title begining with an F that would fit. Different to what I was thinking of, and to my mind not quite as good, but frankly who knows.

  • > Does it begin with an E or an F? Or a 5…

Oooh. Not what I’m thinking of, but what I’m thinking of could actually be what’s written on that page… there’s another letter that could be… EDIT: on closer inspection, maybe not. To me, after living with the thought for months, it would be a shame if it wasn’t named what I was hoping it would because that seems like a missed opportunity, but its ultimately irrelevant. It’s a fab episode to look forward to.

    > There is a one word title begining with an F that would fit.

Or a two word title beginning with F.

    > The G&T Spoiler Policy: We will, however, be discussing … episode titles (again, so long as the title isn’t something like “LISTER FINALLY FUCKS KOCHANSKI” or, “DIBBLEYWORLD”)

So did Lister fuck Kochanski in episode 6? Wait, that wouldn’t be two words. Could it be ‘Red Dwarf X Episode 6: Fucking Kochanski’?

  • I wish those fucking cunts would fuck the cunt off to fucking cuntania.

Good job that sentence wasn’t on here on April 1st.

  • Everyone look this way! Except Kryten who’s just pooped his suit. I’m liking the picture, very V Starbug shot.
Don’t mind the hoops, they seem smaller to me, less drooping. Head to body proportions seem a little out, but mabe because he’s sat down and the suit is hunched up.

Ah Episode titles, well no one said you can’t bring binoculars!

  • Ah Episode titles, well no one said you can’t bring binoculars!

Annoyingly, despite having heard you say what it was, I must have managed to forget by the end of the night. Still, I suppose that there were some other interesting things that came up on that show that were generally receiving more discussion.

  • Still not keen on the mask. It looked a bit weird on monitors and that photo does it no favours either. The hoops are a bit daft, but inoffensive.

Have no problem with the Cat’s suit, although think the new wig is a bit too much.

    Really like Rimmer’s new uniform.

You can’t actually see what the bottom half of Craig’s costume in that pic. In Episode 5…there was a bit of weird choice for that. Can’t recall if he wore the same thing in Episode 1.

  • When the ‘on location’ pic of Cat’s hair was released, I was a bit dubious, thought it was, as you say, too much. Though looking at this picture today, that pompadour has only made me smile.

  • If I have to read:

    -They look old
    -Flogging a dead horse
-The last series was shit, hope they got better writers this time

…one more time on any news article, I’m gunna pop.

  • Ooooh, cryptic. “frankly”….Frank? As in Rimmer’s brother? The two word title being “Frank Rimmer”?

Or am I barking up the wrong leg?

Is Episode 2 the one with Jesus in it? 3 letter word beginning with G = God?

    Conjecturiffic.

  • It reminds me of Kate Winslet recently being interviewed about the Titanic re-release – she said something about the difference being that she’s slimmer than she was back then … and Leo’s not. LOL

  • > Ooooh, cryptic. “frankly”….Frank? As in Rimmer’s brother? The two word title being “Frank Rimmer”?
Or am I barking up the wrong leg?

If you’re referring to my comment, then it’s the wrong leg, arm, torso, neck and head.

  • Oh well, nice of them to ask.

To be fair, they do link to the article they printed yesterday *about* the photo.

  • >Well, it’s a different costume. And a much better one, I think.

I too thought it was a new costume, and I believe it is, it’s just the description below the photo stated it was ‘the same blue tunic he wore in Back To Earth’. But yes, I entirely agree, as I said before, it suits him significantly better now that it did in Back To Earth. I think because it’s less shiny.

  • >Doesn’t it just make you cringe.

Meh. I can take it or leave it. Digging this silver/grey, version though.

    >I think I’m broken. I’ve been trying to do a ‘new’ drawing. Can’t do it. :(

    Artist’s block, Si?

  • > Artist’s block, Si?

It’s what comes from copying the same photos and drawing the same pictures for 20 years. I know every line on Kryten’s face, and when a new mask comes along with eversoslightly differently placed lines, it throws me (the diagonal lines on his forehead, for example, are different).
Plus, there’s the fact that the cast *are* older…

  • >Doesn’t it just make you cringe.

I seem to remember people really liking it at the time.

The new version is good though.

  • Might that be an obscure Lylat Wars reference, Mr. Stephenson?

    …………………….. No? …………………. Yes.

  • As we’re on requests.. any chance of a green series III style tunic, p2p? I’d love to see that!

  • Can we have Rimmer with a grey moustache and yellow tunic, like in Out of Time? And Kryten with a toupe and a suit. And some cobwebs over the monitors. And the Grim Reaper lingering in the background.

You know, just to point out that everyone’s OLD because that’s all people can talk about.

  • You’re amazing! You know I can actually see the red tunic fitting in with the new series, thanks very much for allowing my minds visualisations to come to fruition!

  • >You know I can actually see the red tunic fitting in with the new series

Too much red in the sets for that to work, I think. It’d be like if they built a grey set and then put everyone in grey unif…. oh.

(But seriously, as it is, the four characters’ new costumes generally work superbly against the backdrop of the new sets)

  • Doesn’t it just make you cringe.

    …Nope.

Have to say of the Cat outfits I saw this one is my least favourite. It looks a bit on the cheap side for Cat’s tastes, there are some much better ones in other eps though. I do love Cat’s BTE outfit :) It’s spot on.

  • Rimmer’s BTE outfit is great. I just like this one more.

Interestingly, it’s only in the close-up picture that I realise that – unlike the Series III-V outfits that it’s most reminiscent of (and indeed the BTE outfit, which used the shape/design of those costumes but added the VI-esque padding), it’s not actually asymmetrical. Rather than being one piece that fastens across his right breast, it looks like a jacket that fastens centrally, with then an entirely separate frontispiece on top.

Seeing it at recordings, it really did just look like the III-V costume in blue (and with different footwear).

  • >You’re amazing! You know I can actually see the red tunic fitting in with the new series, thanks very much for allowing my minds visualisations to come to fruition!

    No worries. :)

    >Rimmer’s BTE outfit is great. I just like this one more.

You know, more than anything, I can’t help but think it’s the Hitchhiker’s badge that makes ANY uniform that Chris wears. Take that away, and it just doesn’t look *complete* – i.e. the BtE name badge fail.

And is that a blemish on the second BtE pic above (Chris’ single)? Look around the centre – to the left of the badge. Probably why they went dark for the RDX variant. HD can be way too unforgiving for light clothing.

  • Rimmers BtE costume actually looked like a ‘costume’ to me, and it made him look a lot fatter than he really is. From that picture, the more sombre one he’s wearing now works much better as an actual uniform, and fits him better too.

Danny looks odd in the picture though. I was pleasantly surprised by how youthful he looked in ‘Back to Earth’ compared to Series 8. He looked really old in Series 8, they seemed to pile loads of makeup on him too, especially around the eyes, which didn’t help. It seems they’ve done that here too. I do like the hair though.

  • Craig looks pretty good for his money. He was a bit chunky back in the V-VI days and arguably looks better 20 years later.

  • p2p I love the green series III version of Rimmer picture, suits him well. You people are obsessed :P so exited for RDX. and I agree with Pete Part Three- btw why that name mate?

  • >I’m really unsure about Cat’s costume. All the others look great. They look like proper outfits made out of real clothes. But for some reason, I think Cat’s looks like a cheap ‘costume’.

I remember having that same recation the first time I saw his series 6 costumes. But I got used to them. You know, after watching series 6 a million times.

    >Craig looks pretty good for his money. He was a bit chunky back in the V-VI days and arguably looks better 20 years later.

I agree 100%. I never saw someone who put their body through such a ringer, come out looking so handsome.

  • Back in the Red part three was just too demeaning?

That wouldn’t work, his real name is Birdman.

  • Cos he really likes instant custard! Why d’you think!

Don’t care what anyone says about Series 8, it had some cracking lines.

  • To each his/her own. I don’t think it’s half bad myself, but the rest of the series is dross.

  • I had a Dwarfathon at the end of last year. When I got to series VIII, I was surprised at how good some of it is. The first couple of parts of BITR aren’t bad, in fact (part three is, of course, too much). Part one has a brilliant ending that left my 20-year old self with a grin on his face all week. Cassandra’s a great story, Krytie TV’s not *that* bad, and the first half of Pete part one is actually very funny indeed. Pete part two, however, is *not* very funny indeed (or at all), and Only The Good is just fucking awful.

*ahem* So, er, yeah. Irrelevant Red Dwarf VIII critique there. Sorry.

  • > Krytie TV’s not *that* bad

I find it one of the funniest overall episodes of the series and a decent enough farce, just not very… Red Dwarf.

  • Well exactly, take Tom Part Three’s advice and send VIII back to the jonsmadhouse it came from.

  • So am I right in thinking there’s a screening for the first two episodes tonight? Anyone popping along? Not an option for me but I hope those who do go have a great time.

  • It’s episodes 4 and 5, I believe, the two that had the most extra work done to them in pick-ups away from the audience.

  • Anyone from Team G&T manage to blag a couple of tickets? Can we expect an addendum to the eps4&5 set reports saying “By the way, the missing bits are really funny as well”?

  • Anyone from Team G&T manage to blag a couple of tickets? Can we expect an addendum to the eps4&5 set reports saying “By the way, the missing bits are really funny as well”?

It’s my day off and I’m in London anyway, so I’ve extended my stop by a couple of hours in the highly unlikely chance that Richard Naylor does have a spare ticket like he mentioned. I imagine I’ll just be sat in a coffee shop in Soho until 8:30 when its clear there wont be one however.

  • No one from G&T went along, but I believe some Scouse git managed to sneak in the back door.
