Geek Chase! News Posted by John Hoare on 6th October 2006, 11:21 It’s Friday lunchtime, it’s TOS update time. OK, take it away, Andrew. Norm’s Manchester dates? Covered. 2007 calendar? Short version: you can buy it in the shops now, but wait until next week and buy it from the Global Calendars site – you’ll get a free screensaver. Oh, and you can now download a new wallpaper of an unused design. And the reason we rushed through all that? Because the main news this week is: Geek Chase. IT’S AN INTERNET TREASURE HUNT WITH A PRIZE OF £5000. IT’S AN INTERNET TREASURE HUNT WITH A PRIZE OF £5000. IT’S AN INTERNET TREASURE HUNT WITH A PRIZE OF £5000. IT’S AN INTERNET TREASURE HUNT WITH A PRIZE OF £5000. Basically: UK copies of Beat The Geek will come with a leaflet which will start you off on your quest. You find your way to the end, presumably scattered across a fair few websites, and you can enter the big prize draw. And if you think I’m giving ANY help on here you’re very much mistaken. Actually, I’m starting the hunt now, even without the leaflet – even though I’m sure the stuff isn’t even online yet, I have to try. It’s reassuring to know that it was GNP who created the game – I’m sure that it’s going to be great fun to play even if you don’t win, rather than something knocked up by someone in two minutes who knows nothing about Red Dwarf apart from the fact it has Craig Barrie in it. What with this, the poster, and the Duane headknocker, it’s clear that the full weight of 2 | entertain’s marketing muscle is being put behind this release. Which is great to know, as from what we saw at DJ, it deserves to sell hugely well. Sadly, the competition is not open to people who live in Australia. But then you’re all criminals anyway, so why not just go and nick the money instead? You know, jokes like that were a lot less dangerous when we didn’t have a comments system.
Solved, the prize is hidden in the third tow ship containing ship issue condoms for the Italian mining crew.
Where could the money be… They’d have to send the skutters… And the Money would have to be safe… And it would be right under our noses so they can laugh at us….
You snooze, you lose, twonk ^_^ . Now off to the Recuperation Lounge so we can get the next group in here.
Hang on a minute! You mean to say you’ve been playing the prat version of John Hoare for all this time?
Shall I start a SCAT QUIZ? Your starter for 10: What does ‘BM’ stand for? Actually, this could be a game of Blockbusters.
This competition should clearly have been called Geek Hunt, anyway. “Hello? Can I speak to a Mr. Geek Hunt, please?”
I’m intrigued about how this treasure hunt is going to work! (Head of safety, five buttons . . . ) . . . I’m all in favour!!
“Professor Mamet has received your email. Thank you. This is an automated response. Please do not reply.” Yes! 5 grand here I come. ……well maybe….. Just that 1 in however many thousand Chance prize draw bit to go then…… As Mr Ellard wrote on a different thread….. “I hope we’ll see see some kind of reaction to the Geek Chase, too while most fans won’t want to give away how to get to a certain point in the treasure hunt, there IS going to be a lot to discuss/notice/brag about…” So with no spoilers or helpful hints whatsoever….. That was fun. Some of it was amusing. There are at least two websites I wish were real. That bit near the end is both clever and cruel, you git! And finally in commenting on the games rules. Who is this independent adjudicator person and are they susceptible to bribes?
> Just that 1 in however many thousand Chance prize draw bit to go then…… I’m hoping – and so far I seem to be correct – that the difficulty will act as a filter. That while thousands would have entered a standard ‘give us your email address’ draw, thousands might TRY to enter this…but the final number who get through might be much lower. > That bit near the end is both clever and cruel, you git! Ah, well – but what you did at the end, another might manage in the middle… > Who is this independent adjudicator person and are they susceptible to bribes? Sadly not! 2 entertain have taken on the draw part in order that GNP not be involved in the final stage. While we created the Chase itself and all its content, the draw will be left to them. It’s safer that way – especially as I’ve probably met half the people who end up entering! :-)
Hmmm….I appear to be stuck. Got 2 of Duane’s letters….can’t find what to do once i’ve got into the shop bit of xxxxxxx.xxx…any help? (web address removed by G&T to avoid spoilers!)
Well, it was worth a try. Anyway, now I’ve been in DD’s site and I’ve now got to wait till 3am! I’m gunna be mad if this doesnt give a big clue! *yawn* well….long night ahead.
It’s not a particuarly easy anagram to work out but if you use google there are LOADS of anagram solvers online. They’ll give you the answer straight away. (Time solving tip: when you put the letters into DD’s site you don’t need to select them with your mouse because that takes ages, just highlight the list and press the letter on your keyboard.) I keep falling asleep, I’ll try and catch it around 7am tomorow morning.
OK….have password 1 + 3. Passowrd 2 is proving difficult…I must have missed something somewhere…going for another look around some of the sites……..I just have to say the geek chase is a stroke of genious, very fun. It kinda reminds me of The Lost Experience ARG that I just finished.
Just so long as you know you’re seriously lowering your own odds of winning the prize by telling everyone else all these details… :o) (Little nose a tribute to SingingPotato – it makes the faces just that little bit cuter!)
:o) (Little nose a tribute to SingingPotato – it makes the faces just that little bit cuter!) Hurrah! :oD
> I’ve not told anybody the details…I said I have 2 passwords, I didnt say what the passwords are. Look back at your old posts – you’ve said a lot of things that point the way, including giving away one of the site addresses! (Which G&T have since removed!) :o) But hey, we knew someone would do something like this. It helps everyone else, but it’s up to the individual to decide if they want to let out the information they’ve found. Doesn’t make any difference to GNP!
Well I apologise if ive pissed anybody off. As for the website address I thought most people would already have it as it’s one of the earler ones. I’m not making excuses, as I look back on it I see that I did give away too much. well I apologise and G+T can feel free to edit anything in my posts they feel to be too much information. Sorry again, Smeg4Brains
> Well I apologise if ive pissed anybody off. Hey, nobody’s saying that. check out the reponses – fulla smiley faces! :o)
*Hums killing me softly* I’m completely stuck! This chase is really unfair to us poor dislexic twots! *Cries in to a pillow and passes out* I don’t think I’ll try Sprite 3G again. Back to Max or Diet Pepsi I think.
solved it… but I haven’t got a reply to my mail, as the user above indicated, not even in me junk mail folder :( Should this be an instant response? If so, does this mean I need to keep hunting, or that my email hasn’t arrived at its destination?
Triple-check your sent mail, that the address has been entered correctly. Then quadruple-check the junk filter (we had one guy saying he wasn’t getting an easlier email response, but records showed it was sent three times). Then give the email a few hours to show up – once in a while, stuff gets stuck. After that, email Geek Chase’s support address – privacy@reddwarf.co.uk.
I’m stuck at one point, now (got passwords 2 and 3, though). I’m trying to figure out if something really clever has been done, or if I’m just missing something more simple and obvious. Hmmm.
> or if I?m just missing something more simple and obvious Wherever you are in the game, it’s ALWAYS this reason. :o)
Thanks for the advice, Andrew. It was definatly sent to the right address, I used the clicky-link and ensured that it was copied correctly into my outlook “to” field. Still no mail in the junk box or otherwise and I don’t want to resend the email, incase there is a jam, my message gets delivered twice and I am disqualified for multiple enteries (Ts & Cs #5). I’ll give it another couple of hours, then I will email the privacy address as you suggested. Thanks again :D
Well, I’m this close to giving up. I’ve been stuck at the same place for days, now. I’ve been everywhere, read everything, watched everything, clicked everything, highlighted everything, and I’m still at a brick wall. Like I say, I thought something really clever had been done involving times, but judging by Andrew’s comment, apparently not (but if it HAS been done, then it’s exceedingly cruel for those of us who work 9-5 jobs). Heck, I’ve even tried “cheating” by trying to type in web addresses that might exist but that I haven’t found links to! I’m clearly just too thick to see what must be right in front of me…
> I?m clearly just too thick to see what must be right in front of me? Hey, everyone gets suck somewhere. Just a shame you’re stuck on the EASIEST BIT! :-) Man, I think I might release the solution after the closing date – just to watch everyone fall over as they attempt to kick themselves…
Phew. Done it. Finally. That was : (a) At the end, really, really fucking cruel ;-) (b) Overall, really, really fucking brilliant. Absolutely fantastic. I can’t wait until it’s over and we can start talking freely about the trail!
I’ve found two passwords today. Hooray! but I’m missing password 2. Bloody thing, can’t find it anywhere!
I’ve only just started playing it properly today. It’s excellent. And hilarious. The repetiton of the “8 classic voices” joke on… erm, one of the sites, has just had me in hysterics.
So someone who has this DVD: is there anything in the fine print regarding the contest only being open to UK residents, or anything else forbidding me from entering?
> is there anything in the fine print regarding the contest only being open to UK residents Yes. Sorry.
>Yes. Sorry. No, it’s okay. I’ve been playing limply along (because, I’ll be full-on honest here, it’s actually a really, really fun thing to explore, even without the prize money), but should I happen to complete the chase I wasn’t sure if I should finalize it. I wouldn’t want to inflate the winner’s pool if there was no chance of me winning. Kudos, though. I’ve only been to a couple-three sites, but it’s already gotten some laughter out of me.
Ok. Now I’m really stuck. I haven’t found any paswords. I can’t find any product codes. I’ve got the 9 letters for duane’s but I’m sure one of them is wrong, cause one site had 3 letters but 2 were the same link so i don’t know if it’s intentional or not and one of the letters is repeated twice. I’ve currently got about 23 tabs in firefox notepad open about 20 times each with different bits. hope i get to the end soon :)
This is annoying. I started this a couple of hours ago and now have PW 1 + 2 but am stuck for PW3. i think it has somehting to do with sam murrey and andriods and the UK time but i dont know what to do. could someone let me know if im on the right track? i dont want the answer. just want to knw if im headin the right way
Ah Ha. Completed now. Good little quiz what definetely gets your brains working, but i think that too many clues to the chase are on here, so G+T, Double check please, cos these have actually helped in some ways!
Wow, the games over and i still can’t get through DD’s site. The password must have a clue round here somewhere…..
