Word reaches us via the medium of Twitter that a new Dwarf-related podcast series called ScutterCast has been launched by a chap called ori-STUDFARM (last seen storming off our forum in a strop after being told to get some posts under his belt before relentlessly plugging his own stuff) and cohorts.

Now, irrespective of quality, we at G&T applaud any effort by Dwarf fans to produce new original content. Anything that shows even a modicum of creativity is a million times better than starting yet another forum just because you want to be in charge of something, or hosting a gallery of swiped pictures and calling it a site. With that in mind, we consider it our duty to bring such new enterprises to your attention, despite the fact that the following exchange occurs late in the episode :

“If you search for ‘red dwarf podcast’ on Google, we’re the seventh down because of a Twitter post”
“Well, it won’t take much to climb up higher than that, because the one that’s out there is absolutely dreadful. It’s terrible.”

YOU’RE NOT NICE.

I’m not going to pick apart the various other things I could say about the episode, because the series at least deserves to be given a chance to find its feet. So if you want to listen to the second podcast that has taken the trouble to slag off G&T, here’s the link. Make of it what you will.

(incidentally, Bobby is happy to repeatedly plug ScutterCast on his Twitter, but ignores comments about G&T. Answers on a postcard for what you think we’ve said to offend him.)

  • Hmm…think I’ll wait while I’ve heard more about it. Which given the fact that it’s going to take over the internet, shouldn’t be very long now.

  • I generally just lurk without posting on this site but let me just take the opportunity to say that I think it’s excellent. Gawd knows what Bobby Llew can have against you.

  • Maybe he once saw the Rob Grant Cunt headline. Or certain choice things that were said about him after he had slagged off fat people (which he later kind of apologized for).

  • OK, I was bored at work so I listened to it.

Someone remarked that they’d never noticed how grey the sets were. This wasn’t a good start, but I persevered.

They asked for suggestions and recommendations. I’m sure they’re lurking, so here are mine:

    * If you’re going to speak with authority by doing a podcast on an episode, do a bit of research into when it was filmed and screened. It doesn’t take too long to check that The End wasn’t filmed in 1989.

    * 32/40 is 80%. This isn’t overly complicated.

    * If I’m good enough to listen to your podcast, can you please spare me the adverts for Babylon 5 audio-plays as well. And just because I’m a Red Dwarf fan, doesn’t mean I’m a sci-fi fan and want to hear about Star Trek.

    * Discuss the arrangements for future podcasts OUTSIDE of the podcasts themselves.

    * I’m guessing that impression at the beginning is supposed to be Kryten. Give up, it’s a bit embarrassing.

    * Waffling on about your website and how it appears on Google searches is fucking dull. Ditto the Facebook, Friends Reunited, Twitter talk. Stay vaguely on topic, or make the topic far more vague.

    * It seems to end, but twenty minutes later, it’s still going on. More than half of this is talking about BtE, rather than The End. This is fine, but it is supposed to be a podcast on The End.

    * Buy the DVDs. Converting your VHS to DVD is fucking daft.

I think he’d object more to the comment saying he’s “not a convicted paedophile”.

It IS skutter with a K, right?

  • >I think he?d object more to the comment saying he?s ?not a convicted paedophile?.

Objecting to that statement probably wouldn’t be a great career move.

  • Oh, come now! You slag off ALL newcomers that come to this site and then take offence to a dig directed at a very poorly produced podcast! It’s the off topic banter that we seem to be getting most praise for! I suppose we could have had the episode playing in the background and announce to the listeners ” Watch this bit. I love this bit!” and then laugh hysterically like morons. As for BobbyLlew tweets. Please and Thank You goes a long way. You should try it in between your F**k off and You C**t comments!! Nice to see you appreciated it though. Nice to see I’ve got the ability to post again. Cheers

  • Oh, come now! You slag off ALL newcomers that come to this site

We really don’t, you know. We slag off stupid newcomers, but then we slag off stupid regulars as well.

Nice to see I?ve got the ability to post again

You never lost the ability to post.

  • Also, while you’re here – any chance you could provide a plain mp3 as well as the enhanced version?

  • >and then take offence to a dig directed at a very poorly produced podcast!

If said dig was coming from a well-produced podcast, it might have been more bearable. We know Dwarfcasts are a bit slipshod, but if we didn’t think anyone wanted to listen to them, we’d stop doing them. If even just a handful of G&T regulars get some vague enjoyment out of them, then they’re worth doing.

Incidentally, until I said that first bit there, only Pete (not a site editor) had said anything negative. I don’t think it was hugely unexpected that we’d draw attention to your not-so-sly dig at us even as we were giving you a free plug.

    >I suppose we could have had the episode playing in the background and announce to the listeners ? Watch this bit. I love this bit!? and then laugh hysterically like morons.

They’re commentaries. The idea is that you watch them alongside the episode. They’re also done in a deliberately ad hoc manner, so yes, occasionally we find ourselves watching the episode until something crops up for us to comment on. But at least we do try and make sure we have a vague knowledge of our facts before deciding to talk about stuff (okay, some of us don’t know what nationality Paul Robeson was, but at least we know who Alfred Molina is).

    >As for BobbyLlew tweets. Please and Thank You goes a long way. You should try it in between your F**k off and You C**t comments!!

I can’t remember ever telling Bobby to fuck off or calling him a cunt (we think he’s great), but suggestion noted.

Incidentally, ori, there were definitely aspects of your cast that I liked, and it shows potential, and it was better than I’d expected. But I also agree with some of Pete’s criticisms – especially that you need to be a bit more liberal with the editing scissors, and spend more time talking about Red Dwarf and less about how well your site’s doing. You can take that either as constructive criticism or a slagging off – it’s up to you.

  • >More objecting to the suggestion he just hasn?t been caught.

I figured. He doesn’t seem the type to take offense easily, but who knows. Might be worth asking him?

    >then take offence to a dig directed at a very poorly produced podcast!

I wouldn’t say it was poorly produced. It’s informal, fan based episode chat. It doesn’t really require too much polish. I would also assume it’s aimed at people who enjoy this site, and the contributions of it’s members. You clearly don’t, which begs the question of why you chose here to plug your podcast.

  • >You clearly don?t, which begs the question of why you chose here to plug your podcast.

To be fair, he didn’t – we saw from Twitter that it existed, and in the interests of at least giving new fan material some attention, I decided to post about it. Because whatever my personal opinions of it are, I want there to be more fan-produced content out there, so I think it’s worth mentioning whenever someone bothers to get off their arse and do it. Likewise, if someone were to set up a new fansite that wasn’t just a forum, we’d be all over it.

  • Ah, my mistake. I think I’m getting him confused with the guy who popped in to plug his forum/the amateur dramatic podcast thing.

  • I would like to apologise if I’ve caused offence. I am signed up to about 20 forums of which 3 are Red Dwarf. (Including this one) I was very offended when I first signed up to this forum, being accused of plugging this site and that forum. It upset me that other Dwarfers could be so harsh. The only things I had mentioned were things that I thought other Dwarf fans may appreciate. All of which I’d mentioned, I had no connection with. I suppose I am now linked by association to one of the projects that I mentioned, but not when I posted.

I don’t like upsetting anyone, and ,altough my general digs and criticisms above are addressed to everyone, I don’t mean them to be. It was probably one or two people that offended me and I feel ashamed to lower myself to their standard. As for losing posting privileges, I was genuinaly unable to post on this site when others users were posting. I had no problems on any of my other forums. I had just started recieving abuse for plugging “My” stuff. At the same time the “sticky” was posted about shameless plugging. It was probably a coincidence, but I assumed I’d lost posting privileges because of these reasons.

If you feel that my comments are undeserved, I apologise. Especially to Seb Patrick who, I feel, has been very fair in his comments on this thread.
This is where I’d normally joke “everybody else can F*** off!” However, I won’t.

  • I haven’t listened to the content yet, but I will say this: using copyrighted music and images probably wasn’t the smartest move in the world. On the upside, mis-spelling ‘skutter’ is a crafty way to avoid any suggestion that you’re trying to appear ‘official’.

  • >Oh, come now! You slag off ALL newcomers that come to this site

    >I was very offended when I first signed up to this forum, being accused of plugging this site and that forum.

You say you’re a member of 20+ forums, so I’m surprised that you haven’t yet learnt that using your first post to plug something is seem as pretty poor etiquette. It’s usually a good idea to lurk a bit, post a few comments and get a feel for the place. This would have also alerted you to the fact that the people who post here are a bit “rough & ready” and pull no punches. There’s been a ton of newcomers here in the last few months and I’m sure most of them have no such complaints. And the ones that do tend to bugger off very quickly.

    >dig directed at a very poorly produced podcast!

I’m not sure what constitutes a “well-produced” podcast, beyond being able to hear what people are saying and the same people have something interesting to say. The G+T Dwarfcasts tend to stay on topic and are amusing (if occasionally slanderous…) . My comments on your podcast were genuine (if a little snidey in tone) and perhaps worth considering. Perhaps not. Your call.

You must expect this to be dissected on here, if you’re going to make cheap-shots against a similar enterprise. Well done on a savvy bit of marketing. I certainly wouldn’t have bothered listening to it, if it wasn’t for Seb’s article.

    >Ah, my mistake. I think I?m getting him confused with the guy who popped in to plug his forum/the amateur dramatic podcast thing.

    Yeah…same guy.

  • Well, I don’t know what you’re all talking about. I loved it and heartily endorse this Scuttercast. And I don’t even like Red Dwarf. It’s gay!

  • > More objecting to the suggestion he just hasn?t been caught.

Only if you took it out of context.
In context, I believe it was a response to someone comparing him to Gary Glitter.

  • > It upset me that other Dwarfers could be so harsh.

Harsh? HARSH-IN-CAPS?? Don’t be so silly. If you were a serial killer would you complain about other serial killers being too harsh? No, you wouldn’t.

  • G&T’s cuntishness is actually quite low these days. Plus, with the new Red Dwarf specials coming soon, all I’m getting round here at the moment is excitement, happiness and a bit of fear rather than anything cuntish. You must refer to the Dark Days of Cunt. Cunt.

  • Eh, I have given it a chance, it is a bit too obvious, they are just saying what is on the screen for the most part. I will stick with the Dwarfcasts.

  • > It upset me that other Dwarfers could be so harsh.

If you knock on someone’s door just to sell them something, do you expect a warm welcome?

  • I can’t comment on the content of the podcast since the only free 40mins I’ve got I’d rather be filling my ears with Blue Circle than listening to shameless self-promotion with no real content- that’s jusging by their posts on this board anyhow.

I do find it stange that the guys who come over here to blow smoke up their skirts over the quality of their forum managed to miss the new teasers- one comment on their whole board is from someone who says that their husband says he saw Rimmer, but she missed it, but she’s still very excited! I think I’ll stay here for my news.

  • Oooh! News just in- they get their news from Dave!!! (and G+T, but hey) “Hello Dave… Can I speak to Dave?”

Doesn’t look like Dave has spoken to them since the beginning of March. But its still before the newspapers ;)

  • I haven?t listened to the content yet, but I will say this: using copyrighted music and images probably wasn?t the smartest move in the world.

*Looks at header of every page of G&T*

Will you tell them or shall I?

  • Nice to see I?m still mentioned occasionally. The Philip J Reed comment was of course way off the mark. As reputation precedes me of course I don?t think I shall ever play down my previous early posts on this delicate forum. Alas your past holds tight reigns upon you. I personally didn?t care much for the Skuttercast, it lacked substance and knowledge regarding Red Dwarf history. I didn?t like the music playing in the background, it felt rather distracting. However I undertsand that this is merely the first podcast and hopefully future editions shall be all the more entertaining. Dwarfcasts are still definitive because they are filled with fan lore and funny little nuggets of speculation regarding certain continuity issues. Bravo though to Skuttercasts being an alternative.

  • The picture in the article–is that Iain Lee? Its sheer concentrated douchenozzle-ness may well haunt my nightmares. (That, and Norm in the header.)

  • It is indeed Celebrity G&T Fan Iain Lee himself. Well, I couldn’t find a picture of the ScutterCast crowd, so he seemed like the obvious substitute.

  • This week the boys have done a podcast on “Future Echo’s”. Is that a Babylon 5 episode? Future Echo’s what?
