TV trailer incoming tomorrow! Also, #vindalunar and the launch date featured image

Christ, there’s a lot happening at the moment.

Just now both Naylor Minor and Roopesh Parekh have been all aflutter about THINGS.

First TV trailer! – This will be happening on WATCH tomorrow at 2:35PM and then on Dave the next day at 7:10am. This is massively exciting, obviously, and it would be even more so if the trailer is different to the online one we got a few weeks ago…

#vindalunar – One thing we must all remember is that Dave Lister fucking *loves* curry. Presumably this little mentioned character trait is the inspiration behind this hashtag which was YELLED at us by Roopesh. It’s referring to something that will be happening over on joindave.co.uk/vindalunar imminently, and which is apparently “A OUT OF THIS WORLD EXPERIENCE”. At the moment it’s just a blank page so get your F5 fingers geared up and we’ll see you back here when we know what the fuck is going on.

QUICK EDIT:Looks like we’re getting the launch date.

QUICK EDIT 2: – It seems Naylor Minor is trying to break us, as he’s chosen this time to post this picture of the Red Dwarf refurb. TOO MUCH NEWS. CAN’T COMPUTE.

FINAL EDIT, I PROMISE – Oh. So, the Vindalunar site is currently showing a countdown to 9pm tomorrow, which is presumably when the launch date of Red Dwarf X will be revealed. It seems if you use the ‘Tweet’ button on there you can speed this process up and also “LAUNCH A CURRY AND LAGER INTO SPACE”. Not sure cheap promotional tricks like this are really necessary, but whatever.

However, it seems they might’ve let slip the launch date a little early right here, which states “Red Dwarf is next on at 9:00 pm on Thursday, 4th October on Dave.”. Is that our actual launch date, then? It could well be, but it also could well be referring to a repeat run of series VIII, given the picture directly above it. Either way, we’ll find out at some point tomorrow.

ANOTHER SMALL UPDATE: Now Naylor Major has rather cryptically tweeted ‘May the 4th be with you’. Is this a hint that the 4th October is the correct launch date?

  • It looks like twitter has gone down. The only explanation is that it’s because of the millions upon millions of people tweeting about #Vindalunar.

  • > Um… I think we might have broken Dave’s website.

It seems they couldn’t be bothered to put up some sort of ‘coming soon’ message.

  • Did anyone else think that was not quite out of this world?

But anyway – Trailer tomorrow and a new picture of a moon-hugging, cut-&-shut Red Dwarf ship – I think we’ve done well.

  • I will be much happier with Red Dwarf airing on a Thursday. It’ll have less competition than on a Friday, where I expected it to be airing.

  • Ahh right, and the clip that leaked yesterday. Great performance from Danny and Robert and some nice atmospheric set lighting. Blimey, it’s all happening today.

  • Gah, I can’t be bothered editing this article again, so I’ll put this here. A tweet from Richard, regarding tomorrow’s TV trailer:

@ganymedetitan Slightly altered to make it 60 secs but basically same.

  • > That new cast promo photo’s pretty special, too. :)

It’s lovely, innit? Chris Barrie’s face never fails to amuse.

  • So let me get this straight. They announced that there was going to be something new on the Dave site, which turned out to be an announcement of an announcement. And by announcing this announcement on Twitter we can speed up the announcement.

I bet these marketing people think they’re so clever…

  • > They announced that there was going to be something new on the Dave site, which turned out to be an announcement of an announcement. And by announcing this announcement on Twitter we can speed up the announcement.

If you announce this announcement you will announce that this announcement is not worth announcing.

  • > > They announced that there was going to be something new on the Dave site, which turned out to be an announcement of an announcement. And by announcing this announcement on Twitter we can speed up the announcement.

    > If you announce this announcement you will announce that this announcement is not worth announcing.

Perhaps I should retract my announcement of an announcement announcement announcement until the announcement is worth announcing.

  • > > > They announced that there was going to be something new on the Dave site, which turned out to be an announcement of an announcement. And by announcing this announcement on Twitter we can speed up the announcement.

    > > If you announce this announcement you will announce that this announcement is not worth announcing.

    *head explodes*

  • >Now Naylor Major has rather cryptically tweeted ‘May the 4th be with you’. Is this a hint that the 4th October is the correct launch date

Si’s been tweeting that for weeks.

  • wow only just got in and so much has happened today. just Brilliant. still need to watch the new teaser… off i go

  • On an unrelated note, are they EVER going to stop using those CGI desktop backgrounds in promotional material? I mean, yeah they are nice but that Red Dwarf one has got to be knocking on for 10 years old now. I will gladly cobble one together myself in Photoshop, they can have it for nowt.

  • This better result is something a little more than just the launch date, which we probably already know anyway.

  • Crap, no production clips for me, thankyouverymuch. I wonder Dave hasn’t put that up on their Youtube page? OH, that’s right, so they can hear me scream all the way from over here! >:(

  • >You have to change the message to vote again!

Yeah, it’s not working for me regardless of what it’s tweeted with or how it’s tweeted. It seems that if it’s worked for you once, it’ll always post on Dave straight away, it seems to be posting the same names over and over. I can’t get it to work for me on TORDFC or Eviljobob though *shrugs* there must be a problem at Dave’s end somewhere.

  • “It’s lovely, innit? Chris Barrie’s face never fails to amuse.”

I had the same thought when I first saw the expression this morning. I burst out laughing at it, in fact … just like he looks like he wants to. ;-)

  • The balloon’s only at 7.39%

I fear this stunt may be backfiring somewhat. Even I’m confused / don’t give a shit…and I’m really trying.

  • Maybe it would be better if it launched a miniature Red Dwarf model into space instead of the curry. If there’s a camera attached to the balloon then we would actually see the Dwarf in space.

  • My 5 minutes of fame

Sorry buddy, I was mucking about testing the speed of the reaction between tweeting and it reacting, and knocked your name of (it’s fast).

I reckon this is all a ruse and this webcam is on the Curiosity Rover, when it hits 100% the four walls (which are actually a composited matte painting) will fall open and allow the balloon to fly out into space. It’s alright launching it from earth but if it’s on Mars you’ve got a 250,000,000 mile head start…

  • No matter how many times we Tweet #vindalunar over the next 20 hours or so, I think it’ll miraculously reach 100% around 9pm tomorrow/tonight.

  • Oh, leave them alone.

Though I must admit, Chris Barrie’s starting to look like my Grandad.

Right, I’m going to put Watch on now. Though if it’s the same as waiting for that Doctor Who trailer on BBC One the other week…

  • Seeing as my Free view box doesn’t show ”Watch” I’m really hoping it turns up on YouTube…Which it will…I hope

  • It’s the same as the online trailer from a few weeks ago but with slightly different intros and outros. It was lovely seeing it all in HD<, though. You can get a much better idea of how the models look.

  • Hi,

Just registered to tell you that the so called Watch trailer was exactly the same as the first trailer :(

    Thanks (great site btw)

  • > 13.92%? How many tweets is this gonna need?

Well, considering that the number beside the twitter button is currently at 1,461…

    …A lot. A whole smegging lot. 100k?

  • Like Cappsy said, lovely seeing it on a big TV in HD. :)

*rewinds and watches on a loop for the next half hour*

  • > Damn it, now i wanna watch it JUST for the different intros and outros.

It’s just continuity, no extra clips.

  • That launch date we’re on about? The October 4th one we’ve been throwing around? I think I may have found confirmation.

*frees diary for Thursday nights in October/November*

  • The previous page that stated the start date, is no longer online.

I hope it’s repeated at 11 or midnight, so I can watch it when i get home from work after 10.

  • > 13.92%? How many tweets is this gonna need?
    >Well, considering that the number beside the twitter button is currently at >1,461… …A lot. A whole smegging lot. 100k?

Well that’s 1,461 divided by 13.92 times 100 = Bangs head on laptop, 47 years twelve hanika and 14 geegooks till balloon launch.

Well it’s currently 1536 tweets and 15.64. Now those sums roughly come out firstly 104 and now 98 tweets to 1% so It’s around. 10,500 to 9,850 tweets, Perhaps 10,000 and the two counters arent quite in sync as much as cat and kryten.

  • > No matter how many times we Tweet #vindalunar over the next 20 hours or so, I think it’ll miraculously reach 100% around 9pm tomorrow/tonight.

    Yeah. I was lying, obviously.

  • Based on the current speed it’s going to take us up until next Friday? I really hope it isn’t just going to take us up to the airdate announcement being next Friday’s update and nothing else, I’m already bored by the whole thing.

  • > I really hope it isn’t just going to take us up to the airdate announcement being next Friday’s update

Oh God, I hadn’t even thought of that. :/

I Tweeted it plenty yesterday, but yes, it is very boring already. Pffft.

  • I wonder if they’ve set it up properly. Jonsmad seems to have spotted a direct correlation between number of tweets from the clicked button and the %. It looks like they’re looking at people to CLICK on that button for the percentage to rise, and for some reason it’s still displaying the names of anyone who mentions #vindalunar regardless of how it was done. Surely more than 10,000 have tweeted the hashtag, but maybe not from that button on the site, which may be what they’ve been after :S

  • Direct correlation is my assumption, which given the figures dont correlate in the two examples, and when you look at them now they are more widely out at 18.55% vs 1,617. I’d conclude my previous curryalation assholeumption is wrong. Having watched the dave site vs twitter live search. I think the tweet total is counting any tweet of the url link. Which is why it’s falling behind the percentage which is counting tweets with a hashtag of vindalunar in them.

Looking at the last 12 hours on twitter id say there is around 500 tweets of #vindalunar, take that as a sample size of the whole and it’s been online around 40 hours even with the questions wether multiple hashtags in one tweet work as multiples, or does one user account only count once. I’d still assume 100 tweets equals 1% so 10,000 of the right criteria hashtag tweets reveals and we are about a 5th there, and arrrrrghhhh arrrrrgh this mind patch of Johnny ball and Mr spock is wearing off hellppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Anyone know anything clever about #tracking with software code?

  • Also is the % counting the #vindalunar tweets that it’s not recognising for the username display?

  • If someone magical could upload an HD version of the trailer to youtube I would love them forever (I realise that’s not much of an incentive). Why Dave have decided to show off their flashy new TV series, which they’ve spent loads of money filming on HD cameras, via low quality internet videos is beyond me.

From what I saw on the monitors at recordings the show looks incredible in it’s full HD glory.

  • Since the trailer appeared on TV, I’ve watched it more times than when it was released online. I guessing it’s a combination of HD, a bigger screen to see more detail, and the fact that my laptop’s broke and at the mo, can only use a crappy desktop which can barely play videos. I wonder if they’ll show the Cat and Kryten teaser trailer at some point too.

  • Naylor the Younger has just Tweeted:

You’ll definitely see Rimmer in one of the next two trailers. #reddwarf

I’m assuming that means ‘with dialogue’. Which is nice. :)

  • Just saw it on Dave, just a minute or so ago!

Looks good on the telly doesn’t it?

“A brand new smegging series…” sounded a bit odd though.

  • > “A brand new smegging series…” sounded a bit odd though.

Yer it doesn’t really sound like an endorsement of greatness. More like he’s saying “A brand new cunting series” or the like.

  • It’s mainly the use of word ‘smegging’ that came across wrong, syntactically speaking. Oh, by the way, they just showed it again.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to post ever time a channel shows it! It’s just nice to see it’s being showed regularly.

  • Ooh. Vindalunar’s nearly at 25% now. That seems to have shot up today. Maybe it’s the link address at the end of the trailer?

  • I’d be surprised if it were on Dave in HD in true HD. Although their programming will be in HD, the trailers and adverts aren’t, as I understand it. I think the only way you’ll see the trailer in HD, is if they upload it to YouTube themselves.

I’ve uploaded the TV trailer (in SD) to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYSnB3q6auc

  • Brilliant! Noticed your video is a lot brighter than the one Dave uploaded which people said looked a bit on the dim side. Maybe that’s part of the reason why it looks so much better. Apart from the extra detail it is a whole lot more colourful.

  • I also notice that the sound mix is better, the wind/vacuum?? in the sleeping quarters sounds more pronounced and effect shot of Red Dwarf and Blue Midget seems different, the Dwarf seems further away though it probably isn’t it. overall nice trailer and brighter colour palette makes Rimmer look better and also the differences in Kryten’s mask less obvious.

  • It would be loads better if Craig was the one saying ‘A brand new smeggin’ series’.

  • >It would be loads better if Craig was the one saying ‘A brand new smeggin’ series’.

    Definitely!

  • They’ve also taken parts of the audience laughter out of the TV trailer clip, most notably when Rimmer reacts to Cat’s ‘We’re all deeply sorry bud’ gag. :)

It certainly looks a lot brighter too as others have said :) Can only be a good thing.

  • So it seems that the trailer on Dave must be really working as it feels like Vindalunar has really shot up since it started airing.

  • Currently at 48.48%, going to keep an eye on it until 50% just in case (as hinted by Naylor Jr) something does happen. I’m not holding me breath though!

  • I am currently embarrassed to be even vaguely associated with the show.

I’d like to launch whatever person at Dave thought this was a good idea into space.

  • I’ve tweeted it twice. This is the last time I’m going to share this joke. I acknowledge it isn’t *that* funny, and get it gets less so every time I share it, but I’m not proud, so here we are:

Red Dwarf: Space, Curry and Lager. We’ve had #Vindalunar, next up is #StellarArtois.

    Right, no more, I promise.

  • >Currently at 48.48%, going to keep an eye on it until 50% just in case (as hinted by Naylor Jr) something does happen. I’m not holding me breath though!

    nothing happened

and don’t think I’m a sad, lonely person, when I came there, it was 49.93%

    (I’m a sad, lonely person)

  • Well it’s jumped up to 70% now. I’m tempted to constantly tweet it from a fake account just to hurry it up.

  • That ‘Launch Info’ button hasn’t *always* been there, has it? I haven’t looked for a couple of days, but I don’t think it was there last time I looked. Anyway:

WE’RE SENDING LISTER’S FAVOURITE CURRY AND LAGER INTO SPACE.

Help us send curry-starved Lister a vindaloo and can of Leopard lager by tweeting a message using the #vindalunar and #RedDwarfX hashtags.

Each message will release helium into the balloon which will reveal the release date once it’s filled to the brim.

Keep an eye on the balloon’s progress via the live stream, hit tweet and watch as the balloon expands.

Join the conversation on the Dave Twitter page – http://www.twitter.com/join_dave and get involved using the #vindalunar and #RedDwarfX hashtags now!

Nothing we didn’t already know, but it’s something, I suppose.

  • WE’RE SENDING LISTER’S FAVOURITE CURRY AND LAGER INTO SPACE.

There must be some mistake, they forgot to fit “SMEG” in there somewhere.

  • >It would be loads better if Craig was the one saying ‘A brand new smeggin’ series’.

Or Brian Blessed. Everything is better when said by Brian Blessed.

  • Hmm, they hadn’t told us before that the #reddwarfx hashtag counts towards the total as well. I wonder if that’s always been the case, or whether that’s been added due to various moaning twats (ahem) on Twitter?

  • It sounds like someone putting another 10p in the slot. Also the number under the percentage occasionally flickers between 0 and 1. And finally: what *does* the red writing say? Did we find out?

  • Just read this Radio Times piece: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-08-28/red-dwarf-fans-dave-lister-needs-you-to-help-send-a-curry-into-space

Am I the only one who didn’t realise that they are *actually* going to launch a real curry and lager with a balloon? I mean I saw the video and everything, but I didn’t think they were actually doing it! I honestly thought it was just a visual representation of the incoming tweets before they “launched” (announced) the airdate.

  • It’s just hit 90%. That’s gone up 10% in six hours. Maybe something happening in the morning?

EDIT: No it hasn’t, I’m ahead of myself. It’s just hit 89%. Still. At this rate, it should hit 100% tomorrow sometime, probably in the morning.

  • Okay, NOW it’s just hit 90%. That’s 1% in 38 minutes. Which means it’ll hit 100% at…

    …5:16am. (6hrs 20min)

    Right?

    Why do I even care?

  • Stream seems to be down at the moment.

    EDIT: Back up now.

With a slowdown at night it should be done by midday tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll get a picture or a clip with the date reveal.

  • You G&T should reward the person who guesses the time it goes off ! London time!

Make them King of the fourm for a day!

    My guess is 8:30am

  • Given tweeting can influence the outcome. That’s not really a viable idea. King the forum already exsists here, in hall of fame nominations or really good for the win posts. Something to aim for, that when it happens is reward in itself.

  • The countdown hasn’t moved for the last 8 hours. Even with people being asleep that is a little slow. Almost certain that it is stuck.

  • It’s definitely stuck. Just tweeted multiple times and nothing’s happening. DavidBrough2K11 obviously broke it. Bastard.

  • The screen has gone blank…i’m expecting this to be a elaborate plan to reset it back to 0% so we can enjoy this fun experience all over again!

  • This is motoring along, now. It’ll be launched by lunchtime, I think. They’ve almost certainly been controlling this to stop it reaching 100% in the middle of the night, the big cheats.

  • Countdown launched. 1 hour 22 minutes. So 1.30pm UK time Launch.

    >It’ll be launched by lunchtime,

    It’ll be lunched by launchtime.

  • I think you need to refresh to get the new countdown showing. The feed itself is probably finished at this point.

  • Have to admit I’ve found the promo fairly cringeworthy so far.

The TV trailer seems to be aimed squarely at the “Oh yeah – that show with the guy with the H on his head and that robot and Craig Charles likes curry. LOL” crowd. Forgivable I suppose.

It would be nice if more of the jokes made sense in the context of the actual commercial so we don’t just have Lister saying “a bit of poppadom” followed by him holding up what indeed does appear to be a bit of poppadom, then gales of studio audience laughter. That, taken on it’s own, makes it appear like it’s going to be a bit shit to be honest.

The need for the word ‘smegging’ (or ‘smegGING’ as the Dave announcer insists on pronouncing it) in any and all taglines has to stop. It’s no wittier or less infantile than the smurfing Smurfs movie’s smurfing smurftastic promotion, except RDX is (presumably) aimed at adults.

Vindalunar…well, there’s nothing to be said that hasn’t already been covered.

That said, cautiously optimistic for October 4th.

  • > “A bit of poppadom!” actually always makes me laugh. :)

Me too, but that’s from the episode I saw so I know the context. Don’t know if that’s why.

  • Am I the only one who didn’t realise that they are *actually* going to launch a real curry and lager with a balloon? I mean I saw the video and everything, but I didn’t think they were actually doing it! I honestly thought it was just a visual representation of the incoming tweets before they “launched” (announced) the airdate.

That was my assumption too. I thought the footage of the can, etc, was CGI footage. (I’ll admit, I thought the planet-scape in the background looked realistic, but not something unachievable with a combination of footage and CGI.)

Then I read the guys on the main site speculating on the can falling to earth and mashing someone’s skull. I thought they may have been joking, then read down the posts further and it seems they actually think it’s for real!

I’m still not convinced as I thought this sort of thing involves a lot of money. Then I remember a programme a while back about someone using a home-made rocket to send stuff into orbit…. so maybe not so much. It’s just a borderline orbit after all.

  • Have to admit, as someone who didn’t see any of the episodes being filmed, I don’t find “a bit of poppadom!” funny at all. Or any of the trailer, to be honest. But I’ll still be watching.

  • Well within the context of the show I found it funny but yer, when viewing the trailer I do wonder if I only find it funny BECAUSE I know the context. Which is no bad thing really.

Red Dwarf is hard to clip. See: BBC youtube clips of Dwarf.

  • > I’m still not convinced as I thought this sort of thing involves a lot of money. Then I remember a programme a while back about someone using a home-made rocket to send stuff into orbit…. so maybe not so much. It’s just a borderline orbit after all.

An ordinary helium balloon will go about 5 miles straight up before popping, a more heavy duty balloon even higher.

It’s actually very cheap. Just tie a camera to a big balloon and let it go.

  • I don’t think the atmosphere will allow it to. The helium will either cool down and stop it going any higher, or the balloon loses integrity and blows.

  • >Does a weather balloon actually, properly reach space, though?

Nah, not even close. Otherwise they’d just tie astronauts to them.

But it does get beyond the edge of the blue bit, so it looks like space.

  • What is technically the threshold between “in the sky” and “in space,” since the atmosphere is composed of all those layers? Is it when you reach Earth orbit?

Back to Simple English Wikipedia for me.

  • Have you seen the footage at the moment? Closer to the ground (and daylight too! Is this really live or has it crossed the planet? Already?) and spinning wildly!

  • For the rest of the week, I believe they’re showing the whole launch again. After Friday, they’ll be showing ‘highlights’, whatever they may consist of.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever laughed out loud at a Red Dwarf trailer. Not even the ‘or we could use the teleporter’ one from 93. I have laughed a lot on first broadcast of every series though.

  • Did anyone notice that the earth looks like that asteroid hitting RD that Naylor minor teased us with a couple weeks ago? It looks like a painted car wash sponge thats being
    squeezed!
