No sir, all thirteen! News Posted by Ian Symes on 19th June 2025, 16:44 With thanks to Dave for drawing our attention to this in our forum, a very interesting new release has appeared on the website of online retailer Zavvi. Hot on the heels of 2019’s Series I-VIII Bluray comes… the Series I-XIII Bluray! Yes, Series XIII… let the debate about how to number the various productions of the Dave era continue into a third glorious decade. We’re always wary about fully trusting the details listed by retailers this far in advance of a release, as plans can change, and even those that don’t change may have been misinterpreted at some stage. However, in the absence of any kind of official online presence for Red Dwarf, we’re very intrigued by the list of what’s included. As well as uniting the BBC and Dave eras of the show in a commercial release for the first time ever, we’re promised that Just The Smegs will be there too, which is great news. It felt like the one thing that was really lacking from the previous collection. No word on Beat The Geek, though. The small print specifies that there’ll be a whopping 32 discs, which indicates we’re getting the full extras package from the previous boxset and the individual releases. Two discs apiece for Series I-VI and BTE-XII makes 20, three each for VII and VIII brings us to 26, then single discs for Just The Smegs and The Promised Land equals 28. That leaves four discs remaining, which suggests The Bodysnatcher Collection may well be included in full this time, with the Re-Mastered episodes and all. We’d assume that the episodes themselves will be the remasters (with a small r) from the 2019 boxset, and that the old extras will be presented on clones of the original DVDs, as before. I’m also going to guess that there’ll be no new extras to speak off, but I’ll be more than happy to be proven wrong. Release is scheduled for 6th October, so we’re looking forward to learning more – and seeing the new artwork – between now and then. And we’ve got just under four months to learn to speak fluent Emglish.
I’m not going to lie, the existence of this really makes it feel like we might not be getting any more Dwarf. Not that this kind of this has put companies off before, but if we’re getting any more in the near future this will become quickly obsolete. The first time the whole lot’s being brought together in one set, both eras… I dunno, it just feels a bit final to me.

The first time the whole lot’s being brought together in one set, both eras… I dunno, it just feels a bit final to me. I felt the same initially, but then remembered all those “complete”, “definitive” DVD and Blu-Ray boxsets for long-running series or movie franchises like X-Men or X-Files or other things that don’t start with X, which became instantly obsolete as soon as another new thing came out. This is likely just a chance to get a bit more money out of existing material with a minimum of effort.

I can’t wait to send back my Series III and V discs for replacement. Joking aside, if there’s no new substantial issues I might actually buy this because I’ve been wanting to replace my Dave-era Blu-rays with the PAL versions anyway (thanks, dogshit NTSC conversion).
Yeah, I don’t think this closes the door on new episodes. We got a DVD box set called “All the Shows” in… 2008. Would be a shame not to get anything new on this release, but on the other hand it would be annoying to have to weigh up re-buying the entire show again just to get a single featurette or something. Even if none of the content is new, I hope there’s a G&T review of it, and you give a new detailed appraisal to every special feature except for the ones on the Promised Land disc. Fingers crossed it does include all of Red Dwarf Remastered, because new fans deserve to see Series 1-III how it was meant to be seen – with a film look effect applied and a redesgined CGI Red Dwarf added in for better continuity with Series VIII.
Fingers crossed it does include all of Red Dwarf Remastered Thats for the 2030 re-released Im kinda surprised they never included a choice of remastered or original for the first 3 series. I guess money was a factor.
This did get me thinking about what cover art they’ll go with. What image would be simple, enticing, and fairly represent both the BBC and Dave eras of the show? Then it hit me.
According to Amazon this features “Chris Barrie and 1 more” so I think what we’re actually getting is a complete reenactment of all episodes performed by Chris doing impressions of everyone else, supported by Tony Hawks
It actually says The Bodysnatcher Collection ia included in the set. That might be just the extras. They already included that with the Blu-ray of 1-8.

Hate it when this happens. I’m probably going to fork out for the recently released League of Gentlemen Bluray set just to get the commentaries on the anniversary episodes, the only new bit of content.
Two people posting the exact same tweet at the exact same time would be mildly coincidental if it was immediate, but two people posting the exact same tweet at the exact same time precisely 28 minutes after it was posted is remarkable. Either Doug or Zavvi is wrong about the number of discs. Or they both are, and Amazon are right.

So we’re to consider the series 1-8 blu ray work as remaster v2 are we? And if Doug is calling TPL XIII then I guess that makes it official. Until it isn’t.

If 2 people are posting the same tweet at the same time, won’t it always be X minutes after the tweet regardless how long? Well yes, but I’m saying it’s less likely to occur at the exact same time the older the tweet is.
Looking at it again, I can separate the “Complete Series” and “I-XIII” statements so it doesn’t have to be saying The Promised Land was a “series.” I like the efficiency, better than the alternative of namechecking “The Promised Land” all over the cover and giving it disproportionate importance. A black cover would be a bit dour, but space art always looks cheesy. Maybe an update of the red hull look, or just a group photo from the early 90s.
It’s tough to pick a single cast image that covers all eras. I think my preference would probably be a front-on illustration of Red Dwarf itself, ideally brightly-coloured, flat and cartoonish-looking, and missing half of its ram scoop.
Notice how he felt the need to say “including RD Promised Land” but didn’t mention Back to Earth? That’s because everyone already knows that Back to Earth is Series IX. Although it’s weird he didn’t just say “The Promised Land”. I think people could have put together that he meant the Red Dwarf one, and that the box set isn’t going to include a Mads Mikkelsen film.
Out in October huh. Plenty of time then to film and broadcast Series XIII before adding all six new episodes to this release. I’m with Richard Latto tomorrow so I will tell him to rescan all the film elements and rediscovered studio audience recordings in full of every old episode and stick them on the discs and ask him to rename it the anniversary release on blu ray in full for the first time complete Like blackadder & the young ones. —- Unrumble that title sequence is genius and I’m going to watch it next time I listen to the opening of the Red Dwarf radio show.
I do love me some Blu-ay Discs, but I feel like Kochanski should be featured in full alongside the other characters. Just referencing her with the “BB” in the corner is not enough. Also Snacky should be on there. That’s another way you know a machine made that cover. A human would never forget Snacky.
If it does include Bodysnatcher and gets a Region 1 release that would be a first. I already imported the PAL Dave era Blurays (and Just the Smegs and Bodysnatcher on DVD) and never bothered getting the I-VIII ones, so mot sure how enticing this would be to get.
Amazon have updated their listing; it now has 32 discs there too. Curiously, they’re also listing a DVD version of the boxset, for twenty quid less.
They did Cat twice. Twice. Two. One for the Garbage Pod. In all seriousness, i’ll be gutted if they use a variation on the flawed artwork of the 1-8 bluray.
Has AI just used Ross Kemp there as Kryten because it sees them as the same shape despite Ross not being in any prosthetics?!

the most egregious example of this being when the Harry Potter franchise released a boxset of every film except Deathly Hallows Part 2. Just 1-DH part 1.

I won’t be getting this anyway unless it turns out there’s some new content but I don’t like that artwork at all, no better than the I-VIII BD set.
I don’t hate it, it’s better than the other boxset. But it doesn’t really fit the aesthetic of the show
So… just a straight reprint of all the previous DVD sets with Blu-rays subbed in where possible? Ah well. The cover art is a miss for me unfortunately. The background is too red which clashes with the red in the logo, and I don’t think the Boys have iconic enough silhouettes to earn the Justice League Unlimited treatment. I was never as down as others were on the art on the I-VIII set anyway, but yeah I like that better. Plus it does exactly what I was fearing – focusing on the “core 4” and not giving dues to Holly or Kochanski (or Snacky). I understand the logic, but it was only this specific line up of regulars for 5 out of 12 series (or 6 out of 13, if we’re in this bizarro world where a single episode is a series now), and the 4th character doesn’t even join the crew until 3 series in. I’ll be glad this set exists for giving new fans a straightforward way to own the whole show in the best quality, and for making it possible to get The Bodysnatcher Collection without having to track down an increasingly rare and expensive OOP DVD set, but it doesn’t seem to be targeted at us insufferable nerds who already have everything. Fair enough really. No Beat the Geek though! Unforgivable.
What’s really impressive is that there must be a market for it for them to produce this. Sure it’s using mostly already available content (just different packaging) but in a world where everything is basically freely available anyway, they must think (know) there’s enough people willing to drop £80 on this to make it worth their while. Because it sure as shit isn’t anyone here or other fairly hardcore fans as most if not all will have some version of the DVDs/Blu-rays.
I think it’s probably aimed squarely at the Christmas market. Maybe the recent Blackadder set did well and they wanted something similar this year.
I understand the logic, but it was only this specific line up of regulars for 5 out of 12 series (or 6 out of 13, if we’re in this bizarro world where a single episode is a series now) Given that Holly’s in XIII, surely that’s still 5 out of 13. And the lineup doesn’t happen until the sixth series, either.
Touché! I think my attempt to mentally convert The Promised Land into a series categorised Holly as a recurring guest star instead of a regular. He does spend a lot of the time apart from the other 4.
Using series X silhouettes is a reasonably good call, just because Kryten’s costume from that era (despite being crap across the board) does have a distinctive silhouette. But they couldn’t be arsed to adjust Rimmer or Lister, who now appear to be standing on tiptoes… Yeah, not great.

Yeah, you could make these silhouettes far more recognisable with just a couple of small tweaks.
Wait, 33 discs? Where’s the extra one come from? Is “DVD Easter Eggs” its own disc now? Or is it finally justice for Beat The Geek?

Faded Hattie looks so disappointed in me. The two of them look like they’ve just been to parents night where my teachers all told them how much of a nuisance I am.
Id have had the X silhouettes with the reflection being maybe from series 3-5 silhouettes. I think that would have been a fun way to do it. im not sure what full body images they could have gone for with 3-5 but hey.
You couldn’t make Krytie TV today. Because of the woke. I do remember some very minor concern before Cured came out that featuring Hitler might be less appropriate in 2017 than it was in the 1990s, when it was fine.
If anyone wants to have a good look at the packaging, here’s an unboxing video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=FwmAiFiMft4
If anyone wants to have a good look at the packaging, here’s an unboxing video I thought I was Mandela effecting Kryten’s facial expression on the cast photo from the back cover, but turns out there are two versions of that pic.

Looks cool. Interesting that the design of Red Dwarf on it is broadly similar to the one on the Series I-VIII set that folks got upset about. Minor shame that the “extra” disc is another separate cardboard sleeve again. Good that the Easter Eggs disc is a Blu-ray rather than a DVD, even if it is extremely annoying that it contains exactly one new special feature that is sub 5 minutes in length (which will at least be in glorious 1080p). Those AA ads alone might make it worth it for some to trade in their old Blu-rays, but not for me. Unless we find out that the disc also contains a Rob & Doug audio commentary, a dedicated Smeg Ups feature, and an hour long behind the scenes documentary. Tell you what though BBC / GNP, if you make new Red Dwarf and release it on home media, I will buy this to make room on my Red Dwarf shelf for the new series/special. Deal?
If Easter Eggs are Easter Eggs because you have to hunt for them, are they still Easter Eggs if they’re readily accessible? Who’s eating this chicken?
That looks quite smart. I’d quite like to own that. But not for £80 I really appreciated how the inboxes reoriented the discs so they were the right way up
If Easter Eggs are Easter Eggs because you have to hunt for them, are they still Easter Eggs if they’re readily accessible? That depends, do you believe an Easter egg ceases to be an Easter egg once it’s been found? But also, a vast majority of the Easter eggs I’ve possessed in my life were never hidden at all. This Easter egg disc is simply abiding by a more British Easter tradition – gorging yourself after putting in no effort, potentially first thing on a Sunday morning.
This boxset is the first Red Dwarf DVD/Bluray release I haven’t preordered in over 20 years. That was originally down to me thinking I’d get round to it eventually, and then I thought it’d have to wait for a payday or two to pass as it’s a bit costly. Then I went and bought a bloody ticket for that fucking convention.
Then I went and bought a bloody ticket for that fucking convention. You must have a wild social life.
Then I went and bought a bloody ticket for that fucking convention. You must have a wild social life. Nope.
Has anyone here ordered it? Much as I was quick to snap up the previous BR boxset, that was less than half the cost of this one and didn’t consist entirely of stuff I owned already.
Most of all I’m keen to hear confirmation of whether the correctly-authored discs have been used for III and V or whether they’ve reprinted the original faulty set, which wouldn’t surprise me.
Most of all I’m keen to hear confirmation of whether the correctly-authored discs have been used for III and V or whether they’ve reprinted the original faulty set, which wouldn’t surprise me. Yeah I’d like to know that. On a recent Dwarfcast I think Cappsy suggested later runs of that set had the correct discs, but I’d like it confirmed for this. I might actually consider getting it because I sent the 1-8 set back so technically don’t already own half of it.
My shelf has all the VHS tapes except VIII, the American DVDs 1-XII, two sets of the UK DVDs 1-VIII, blu rays of Back To Earth – Promised Land plus the 1-VIII blu ray box set. There is no reason for me to buy the new box but in the words of Flasheart I’m gonna do it anyway.
I was extremely slow getting the first blu ray box set. Waited for all the hoo-haa of the authoring issues to die down and got it in 2023. Forgot to mention I also have the Bodysnatcher Collection. I don’t have the Just The Smegs DVD but I do have Smeg Ups, Smeg Outs and the VHS Double Pack
I pre-ordered it in the hopes of getting it early for review purposes. Then I got an email from Amazon saying my payment had been declined, because I’d got a new debit card in the meantime and forgot to update it. So now it’ll be late anyway.
Much as I was quick to snap up the previous BR boxset, that was less than half the cost of this one and didn’t consist entirely of stuff I owned already. I take it that’s because you didn’t have Bodysnatcher, or something. Unless I’m forgetting something, there wasn’t anything actually new to physical media on the I-VIII Blu-ray set. And there’s nothing previously unreleased on the new one either except the AA adverts?
Actually, I tell a lie, I only have Back To Earth on DVD rather than Blu Ray because I wanted to own the exact replica of the item within the show.
I assumed the distinction Dave was making was that in 2019 the HD(-ish) versions of the episodes themselves – and their subtitles – were technically new, and the new box set doesn’t have anything like that. It does have the AA ads, but otherwise it’s just consolidating the previously released content.
Yeah exactly, the whole point of the 1-VIII boxset was the shiny new versions of the episodes. I have the Bodysnatcher DVD already (and the previous BR boxset doesn’t even include all of that content as it doesn’t have Remastered).
I never bought the last one but might get this one day, be nice to have it all in one box. That said I’ll then be getting rid of all my DVDs, as I can’t fathom owning stuff I’ll never use.
Yeah exactly, the whole point of the 1-VIII boxset was the shiny new versions of the episodes. Oh okay. Well unless something different has been done with the transfers this time around, and surely we’d have heard about it if that were the case, then I’ll be passing on this new boxset for all the same reasons as I didn’t bother getting the I-VIII one and sticking with the old DVDs.
I’m interested in getting this set because, as I’m sure I’ve said many times before, there are some pretty serious problems with the NTSC Blu-rays of Dave Dwarf and it would be nice to own the entire show in PAL.
