Nevertheless, these two numpties have just become the second and third people in the site’s ten year history to gain that honour. This is ostensibly because I gave them an ultimatum last night to stop the nonsense or face the consequences – I went to bed, got up, and there was fresh nonsense. Last night was quite amusing, as a one-off, but I don’t want it to happen every day. We were quite hesitant to take any action over this, and perhaps we should have stepped in sooner. The thing is, G&T has always been fairly self-regulating, without any need for much moderation – if someone’s being a dick, several people will tell them they’re being a dick. Sometimes these people leave, but most of the time they just stop being a dick and become part of the community. The problem in this case was that these two chumps acted like they’d been called dicks before anyone had said anything to them, so there was very little chance of any sort of compromise or reconciliation. Please be reassured that this banning is a special case – we don’t intend to start aggressively waving around our ban hammer, or intervening in a moderator-y way into discussion unless it’s absolutely necessary. We’ve spent a decade doing our best to avoid the politics and pettiness that plague most forums, and it’s successful because the vast majority of the people who post here are substantially smarter than your average punter. Sincere apologies to anyone that’s been offended or put off by this sorry affair. Business as usual from this post onwards. And at least we’ll have some decent quotes to add to our recommendations box.
