Ever? :) Creator Topic Viewing 17 replies - 1 through 17 (of 17 total) Author Replies March 2, 2008 at 12:57 am #121062 Smeg4BrainsParticipant I’d give him a synaptic enhancer…….if thats what u want to call it……………pwah!!! March 2, 2008 at 1:47 am #121063 SomebodyParticipant Actually, more seriously – what does it say about Lister that, when stripped of his memories and the mental picture of himself that comes with them, he dislikes pretty much everything about himself? It’s almost as if, deep down, he’s got just as much self-hatred as Rimmer, he’s just better at deluding himself. March 2, 2008 at 2:58 am #121065 Ben PaddonParticipant Now that is an interesting point. March 2, 2008 at 3:04 pm #121072 DaveParticipant That is interesting. Maybe that’s why Bodysnatcher & Me2 seem to work equally well. March 2, 2008 at 5:47 pm #121075 John HoareParticipant It’s very interesting. Although I doubt it was intentional by Rob and Doug – it’s just a funny situation that he would hate what he was really like. Not that that doesn’t make it interesting, or worth exploring, of course. March 3, 2008 at 12:20 am #121080 Ben PaddonParticipant I could write a million articles on Hidden, Non-Existent Meaning in Red Dwarf. However I’ll spare you all the tedium of having to read them by not writing them. March 3, 2008 at 9:57 am #121083 AnonymousGuest I don’t think he overtly hates himself deep-down, but for a short period of time in Psirens he gains and objective view-point and focusses on his flaws in the same way that Rimmer does. The same flaws that Rimmer picks on. And from an objective viewpoint (if you didn’t know Lister) then he would seem slobby and moronic. But of course there’s more to him than that. Once he’s regained his memories he regains the complexities and self-delusions that we all have. March 3, 2008 at 11:39 am #121085 AndrewParticipant “You’ve got brains, man. Brains you’ve never used.” This stuff crops up here and there, so I’d say we’re seeing something that IS an intended part of the show. It’s not so much self-loathing as it is disappointment in himself, that he could have been more. But, as a drift-through-life kinda guy, he doesn’t give it much conscious thought. Which adds up. March 3, 2008 at 11:44 am #121086 BazParticipant Well Timeslides starts out with Lister hating his life. March 3, 2008 at 1:14 pm #121091 John HoareParticipant It?s not so much self-loathing as it is disappointment in himself, that he could have been more. But, as a drift-through-life kinda guy, he doesn?t give it much conscious thought. Which adds up. Forgot about stuff like The Inquisitor, actually. Good point. Well Timeslides starts out with Lister hating his life. As much as I love Timeslides – and I really really do – starting the episode with Lister acting out-of-character is a bit of a cheat. Not too much of one – it’s not TOTALLY out of the blue, when you’re in the situation he’s in – but still a bit of a cheat to get the story going quickly. March 4, 2008 at 1:47 am #121107 ChrisMParticipant Concerning the early point with Kryten and the synaptic enhancer, in some ways it’s strange that he was infected by the despair squid in the first place. That being said, it was mentioned in DNA that his brain is part organic so I guess that takes care of that. I didn’t think he breathed though (and surely he’d need to suck it in to ingest it?) Having plastic hands and no veins/blood to absorb the drug, you’d think he would still be immune if it was absorbed through touch. I’m overthinking it aren’t I? Hee hee. It’s interesting to do though, and it doesn’t make me like the episode less. Another thing I wondered about was, how did the DNA computer in, er, DNA change his whole structure since it was only his brain that was part organic? What happened to all the plastic and metal? Oh right it was given to mini Robo-Lister at the end. ;} March 4, 2008 at 10:04 am #121108 AnonymousGuest I thought that we was talking about Psirens? March 4, 2008 at 10:25 am #121109 AndrewParticipant Yeah – someone’s confusing synaptic enhancer with lithium carbonate. Tch! :-) March 4, 2008 at 11:49 am #121111 Danny StephensonKeymaster > someone?s confusing synaptic enhancer with lithium carbonate. SCHOOLBOY ERROR! March 4, 2008 at 12:20 pm #121112 AnonymousGuest AHAHAHAHA! What a silly thing to call lithium carbonate! Here’s someone making a similarly daft error! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Bak28KYLIgc March 4, 2008 at 1:22 pm #121113 John HoareParticipant Oh, god, that’s just a perfect sketch. They make it look so easy… March 5, 2008 at 12:42 am #121150 ChrisMParticipant Whoops. And the first post actually said “Would anyone except Kryten have given Lister the synaptic enhancer? ” which I somehow interpreted in my mind as “who would give Kryten the synaptic enhancer”… which somehow I confused with the Lithium carbonate… whilst not taking note of the actual episode title either. Talk about duncebreed central… Never mind. Still, my examples still pass as examples of interesting things that don’t quite work in Red Dwarf. Even if that wasn’t what this thread was about… Brain like the roadrunner but not half as speedy, that’s me! Meep meep! By the way that Fry and Laurie Youtube sketch reminds me of the Kryten middle name gag.
