Unless he asked her where the captain’s office is, I’m going to be disappointed.

A brief but pleasant chat. More about music than Red Dwarf, obviously.

Funny how Craig says that Clare played his girlfriend. Guess “she played a colleague I barely knew but had an unhealthy romantic obsession with” doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Also when Craig asked her if she gets recognised as Kochanski, a small part of me was expecting her to say “Yes, and I fucking hate it. Leave me alone, nerds.”

Yeah that was quite a sweet little reunion really.

If anyone’s interested, I just uploaded a copy of the interview to YouTube: https://youtu.be/oQKuF7TxVvw

Incidentally, if anyone knows how embeds work here please let me know. I haven’t used WordPress in nearly seven years.

For the forum: just copy the embed code YouTube gives you directly into the box
For comments: it’ll do it automatically when you post the link

    Like this?

Edit: No, evidently not like that.

    Well, I’m stumped.

Had Jane Horrocks on his show yesterday and they touched on her appearance in Red Dwarf briefly. Starts about an hour and 6 mins in.

Thanks for that Stephen.   Mind blown that Jane was doing a Joanne Lumley Impression. I never noticed, but now she’s said it seems like something I should have noticed. It’s not Patsy though it’s definitely Purdey.

Since I’m using this thread as a default ‘Craig interviews people who were in Red Dwarf’ one, Timothy Spall is having a chat with him right now so they had some discussion about his appearance in Back To Reality at the start.

I don’t know where he’s gotten this from as I can’t find any mention of it anywhere else, but in the latest video on the RD Nerd YouTube channel, as well as reviewing Sin Bin Island he says that Doug will be Craig’s guest on his radio show on December 30th.

Enjoyable interview, talked about the future of Dwarf at the end which was stuff we’ve heard before but Doug did add that they’ll approach streaming services in the new year but wanted to give the BBC a year to come to them first. Threw in that it’d make a good Christmas special.

Yeah, nice little interview. As well as talking about approaching the streamers, he also threw in that there had been talks around doing the new special as an audio version, which he said would be easy but that it would be disappointing if a full TV version couldn’t be made.

He also mentioned the rise in AI videos (including of the Queen in a kebab shop, apparently) as evidence of how easy it would be for them to pull off the de-ageing techniques required.

Also, one more detail that I can’t remember if it was new or not: the two Rimmers teaming up to chase the two Listers have apparently been promised a promotion to Officer if they catch him.

Outside of Red Dwarf, on Sin Bin Island he sounds keen on a TV or movie adaptation and said he would be disappointed if it doesn’t happen.

Given that even Disney is wary of using AI like that due to rights issues and public backlash, good luck Doug.

Truly the pinnacle of imaginative uses of visual effects.

When TV and movies de-age actors it costs alot of money. So can you imagine how it would look if you depend on a cheap AI method to do it? Either Doug will revolutionise TV, or it will just look okay sometimes and not others. The CGI Dino in Pete was cool at the time because it was affordable, but looking at it, its certainly not Jurassic Park level. It does look CGI.

I’m going to be pessimistic and say i don’t think any streaming services will take the offer to make more Red Dwarf. Although i’m not sure what streaming services he has in mind.

I admit I am particularly skeptical they will take up the offer to make THAT type of Red Dwarf. Not just the de-aging, but the fact it would probably be a coda to an established series rather than a new series outright.

Yeah, I think it’s a bit late in the day to be looking for a new financial backer. “We’ve done 74 episodes already, we’re just looking for someone to broadcast the last one or two,” isn’t a great opening line.

If they get new backers, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the last one or two. From what I remember, the cast were talking about transitioning from series to specials, not closing out the show.

And who knows, if a backer insists on a full season, they might still give in and come back just to keep the show alive a little longer.

Right??? Just give me some false hope

If a streaming service did agree to fund and distribute one last Red Dwarf special, you’d assume that part of the deal would involve them getting the (exclusive?) rights to stream all the previous episodes too, at least in the regions where the programme is most popular. That might be awkward given its presence on iPlayer and the streaming service formerly known as UKTV Play.

Have there been any times when a streaming service has made a special to revive and conclude a long-cancelled TV series, despite them not having the rights to stream existing episodes of that TV series?

Looking up a few, the closest example I’ve found was when Netflix distributed the Invader Zim movie, even though at the time they didn’t stream the original series in the US. However, Netflix didn’t fund that production from the start; it began as a Nickelodeon production, and Netflix just made a deal to distribute it.

Given that, realistically, the earliest we’ll get anything on screen will be mid 2027, by which point Robert will be 71, I don’t think there’s much life in the show left anyway. I can’t imagine Doug sees it being more than two or three specials at most at this stage.

Since Doug brought the show back to Dave he has been very open to the idea that they can just keep making more and more. And i don’t think Doug wants the show to end no matter how old the cast is. So i’m certain he would tell streaming services that he would produce plenty of Red Dwarf material if they were willing to put the money in. Robert can be persuaded to keep getting in the rubber till he is 85.

I don’t know what smaller streaming services would be interested in Red Dwarf. Something like Netflix certainly wouldn’t be. I suspect Doug knows this and its why he held out for the BBC to change their mind as the BBC/BBCW would be the better option and they don’t seem interested anymore.

Hey it worked for Doctor who with BBC and Disney. for 2 seasons and a spin off.

Honestly think finding a backer would have been easier in the straight-to-DVD era.

I would make the argument it would be easier to sell Red Dwarf as a nostalgic franchise to resurrect in 2026 if it hadn’t been producing episodes throughout the past two decades that wore down the initial novelty of getting new material.

Everyone involved in that decision was under the naive hope it might keep going.

Well yeah but to keep Disney interested at the beginning the BBC pretty much promised a cinematic universe to stream on Disney+.
