Was it just a coincidence that they had episodes with a spooky theme, or was the production gearing towards it? And if so, why did this vibe get abandoned in series 6?

I think VI was a more conscious retooling after they’d tried to write a US sitcom, before that it felt more organic and just wherever their moods took them or what they thought was working.

Quarantine gets comically Halloweenish with Lanstrom rising from a coffin to organ music howling like a werewolf and Rimmer dressing in a sexy costume.

It’s not that VI doesn’t have horror vibes, but it is indeed odd that only Holoship eschews it in V.

It was certainly a lot darker and some episodes had plots that were straight out of a sci-fi horror. It might have been a reflection of the grim, horror-based sci-fi movies that were getting more and more popular at the time.

Holoship still has a melancholy tone at least, and the first appearance of the ship is quite eerie. So it doesn’t seem like such an odd one out to me.

Polymorph, DNA and Justice could also probably slot into Series V without too much thinking, so it’s not unprecedented.

Every Red Dwarf episode is horror when you think about it:

The End – The horror of waking up and finding that everyone you’ve ever known is dead.

Future Echoes – The horror of finding out that your son is doomed to die.

Balance of Power – The horror of your boss being a fucking prick while simultaneously being impossible to beat up.

Waiting for God – The horror of learning that you inadvertantly caused generations of needless war and bloodshed.

Confidence & Paranoia – The horror of your fragile innermost thoughts being put on display for all to see, and also witnessing a man explode.

Me2 – The horror of being replaced.

Kryten – The horror of discovering that you’ve lost your ability to discern reality from fantasy.

Better Than Life – The horror of having your dad call you a total smeghead, being stuck with a family life you hate, losing all your money, being buried up to your head in the sand, smeared with jam and set upon by killer ants, and having your hand smashed in by a tax collector.

Thanks for the Memory – The horror of learning the love that people have for you has actually always been a lie.

Stasis Leak – The horror of watching a sci-fi comedy where time travel is introduced but extremely poorly utilised.

Queeg – The horror of having a choreographer shout at you to complete menial tasks.

Parallel Universe – The horrors of sexual harassment and unexpected pregnancy.

Backwards – The horror of having no true free will / having to suck shit into your arse.

Marooned – The horror of slowly starving to death and being unable to save yourself.

Bodyswap – The horror of having control of your body taken away from you.

Timeslides – The horror of being able to directly witness your younger self and irrefutably comfirm that he’s cringe.

The Last Day – The horror of being hunted down by a deranged homicidal android.

Camille – The horror of you and your mate both fancying the same girl.

White Hole – The horror of needing to depend on an arrogant drunk to save your life.

Dimension Jump – The horror of learning that your failings in life are scientifically pretty much entirely your fault.

Meltdown – The horror… of WAR.

I did actually tell Doug my favourite Red Dwarf was Red Dwarf with a bit of horror in it, a few years back. He reacted like he genuinely had never heard anyone say that before. 😅

Well most people just go Hehe Red Dwarf Funny. So in terms of Tone… whatever Tee Hee Red Dwarf Funny.

I think Red Dwarf 5 having a slight horror vibe is due to the monster of the week formula and i do kinda miss when the show took that stuff a little more seriously and could still be funny. it didn’t need to all be parody. The inquisitor was not a parody of terminator. It could have been. But its probably more a homage if anything. To me thats more ambitious then lets film underwater for real or do de-aging.

It just built on the elements they introduced in the previous couple of series. The monster of the weak element had gorier and darker sides in earlier series and that was developed. The same way the shift away from scenes on the Dwarf itself were expanded upon to be entirely Starbug-based in VI, the regular guests in VI led to the more populated universe of VII and such.

And he never talked to you again.

It was unprecedented enough in Polymorph that they saw fit to warn the audience.

I mean yes, the other thing about V is that there is barely less Starbug in it than VI.

Horror vibe Red Dwarf is my favourite Red Dwarf.

I don’t watch Doctor Who so I’ve no clue in what manner I just got burned but sick burn, either way!

That was always just a stunt, as post-watershed they didn’t need any such warning (and content warnings take place in the continuity announcement before the shoe anyway).

I laughed out loud at that. For some reason my phone likes to correct perfectly reasonable words to other words that it likes better.

Hinchcliffe era is widely regarded as the peak of Classic Who by many (not all) fans, at that time they did a lot of more horror-oriented stories inspired by Hammer etc, with episodes like The (excellent) Brain of Morbius towing the line between pastiche and plagiarism. So he was saying you have great taste.

Sci-fi horror goes back to The War of the Worlds and stuff, but it was good that Alien finally invented it in 1979.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about Frankingstein.

Fun fact – on a certain programme that I used to work on, the production team felt they could no longer trust the channel to do appropriate levels of warnings during continuity, as they were so blasé about it that they were at serious risk of Ofcom breaches. Even though it would be the channel that got in trouble rather than the production company, they just added their own content warnings via their distinctive Geordie narrator before the title sequence, in a manner not terribly dissimilar to Polymorph.

Conventional taste at least. Need to watch more Hinchcliffe before I can say I agree with it.

My favourite novel and my favourite album in one story. Such a pity all the big adaptations have thrown the original story in the shredder. Not that they’re all bad, George Pal did a good job, but the BBC and Spielberg ones are dross.

Funnily enough the writer of Brain of Morbius despised it so much that he had his name taken off it. He went away after submitting his final script and a lot of changes were made without consulting him. It does contain a lot of nonsensical crap that’s hard to ignore but the acting and atmosphere just about carry it.
