DwarfCast 168 – Re-Disc-overy: Series V DwarfCasts Posted by Ian Symes on 19th December 2023, 17:16 Subscribe to DwarfCasts: RSS • iTunes “Disgustingly Northern” As we continue our series revisiting the now decades-old DVD releases, the main thing we re-disc-over this time out is that Series V tempts us down conversational side roads like nothing else. So join Cappsy, Danny and Ian as we discuss Juliet May’s short-lived tenure as director, attempt to get to the bottom of conflicting stories about Red Dwarf USA, and uncover more examples of institutional racism within the Metropolitan Police. We also speculate as to what the visual effects workshop smelt like, hunt down pictures of Timothy Spall dressed as a pig, and confess the real reason behind our lukewarm response to the fan commentaries nearly twenty years ago. Strap yourself in, this is a waffley one. I’m gonna be plumping up the cushions for this one later. Has anyone still got the starbug that came with some versions? That looked like a superior corgi to me.

It was a skutter for Series VIII. I have that and the Series V set, and I think those were the only 2 series DVDs that got special “comes with a toy” editions. Maybe they considered making it Red Dwarf for Series VIII, but realised they would have had to use the pencil version, and nobody would have bought it.
My Mr Flibble puppet is open, but is kept in its bag and backing card. And my Starbug toy is unopened and kept in the Series V boxset box, and the Skutter is unopened and kept in the Series VIII box. Anyway.
My Mr Flibble puppet is open 🤨 Actually, I think it’s a puppet that I bought for a sibling that I reclaimed after they opened it “to keep it safe”. Come to that, it’s in very good condition, so I probably opened it, let them touch the puppet, then put it safely away again.
I didn’t have a toy, but for some reason I did pay a couple of pounds extra for a Chris Barrie signed version, the first and last time I’d ever do something like that.
Great Dwarfcast. I think as the content on these DVDs gets richer, the discussions are becoming even more interesting and detailed. The Juliet May situation is a really interesting one, and something that feels relatively under-discussed when it comes to Dwarf in general. It’s remarkable that with so much upheaval behind the scenes, they managed to produce the most consistently great series of Dwarf ever.
This DwarfCast is a glad tiding, because Series V is in many ways the Christmassiest Red Dwarf series: – Holoship – watching movies with your family. – The Inquisitor – The Inquisitor judges whether you’ve been naughty or nice, and if you’ve been nice he gives you the Christmas present of being allowed to continue existing. – Terrorform – it’s so awkward to feel obliged to hug that one relative nobody likes. – Quarantine – sprouts. – Demons & Angels – you get a new toy but it randomly breaks almost immediately and then you have to spend the whole day trying to sort things out. – Back to Reality – you spend way too long playing a single game which isn’t even that good.
Has anyone still got the starbug that came with some versions? That looked like a superior corgi to me. Back when the Smegazine was being published, there was one month when they advertised that the next issue would come with “a Starbug” keyring. Because I was presumably a bit thick, I imagined this was going to be a 3D printed model hanging from a chain and so I spent the time between issues building this up in my mind and getting incredibly excited about this miniature toy Starbug I was going to have and then I got it and, of course, it was a flat keyring with a picture in it. Which was a bit shit in comparison. Jump to however many decades later and this was announced and I was SO excited because this is exactly what I had wanted (but even better because it wouldn’t be on a keyring) and I effing love that little model. Then after some time one of its legs snapped off and I had to buy another one (the one that was sold separately). Then after some time one of the legs from that also snapped off. And so now I have a third one that I am keeping in its box which may forever remain unopened and another one that I try and stand on the shelf in such a way as to conceal its broken leg.

It must be well over a decade since I last watched the commentaries, but to this day I can’t see ‘Terrorform’ written down without hearing Danny singing “Oooooohhhh Terrorforrrrrm” like the old Bodyform advert.

sfx shot of Star bug diverting to a different airlock. Quarantine. when rimmer sends them to bay 47 docking. Yeah this was my thought too. Seems to fit.
This was the year I started uni too. I don’t remember much about it, actually. I remember getting the remaining DVDs while at uni, but this didn’t lodge in my memory. Would have picked it up from HMV or Virgin in Leeds. At the time I’d properly started my comedy DVD collection and usually bought one a week. I do remember looking at the collectors editions with the models and thinking “nah, just want the DVD,” which sums up my attitude to little knick-knacks and things.
sfx shot of Star bug diverting to a different airlock. Quarantine. when rimmer sends them to bay 47 docking. Yep. Realised that after we’d recorded. Add it to the pile of errata. The floor will need reinforcing soon…
This DwarfCast is a glad tiding, because Series V is in many ways the Christmassiest Red Dwarf series: Quarantine – sprouts. And snow. Back to Reality – you spend way too long playing a single game which isn’t even that good. And there’s the Christmassy Lister best ever episode intro. And Noel Edmonds is mentioned in a smeg up.
This DwarfCast is a glad tiding, because Series V is in many ways the Christmassiest Red Dwarf series: Quarantine – sprouts. And snow. And literally mentions Christmas. As do many more episodes than I would have expected (only two came to mind).
And literally mentions Christmas. In fact, in the way Rimmer thinks to bring up Christmas presents, it might even be the (non-mobisode) episode that takes place closest to Christmas Day according to Red Dwarf’s calendar. No Epideme that was Quarantine. Easy mistake.
I’m gonna be plumping up the cushions for this one later. Has anyone still got the starbug that came with some versions? That looked like a superior corgi to me. This one lives on my desk, complete with authentic broken leg.
Great podcast as always, though I’m a little disappointed as I was hoping you guys would join the cast and do your own Craig Charles impressions.
What the hell are you people doing with your Corgi Starbugs? Never had a broken leg on any of them and I 100% suspended them on cotton and filmed flyby shots on my VGA res phone camera.

Finally got around to listening to this and then had to watch the FX footage and deleted scenes, as so much interesting stuff comes up in the DwarfCast that I’d forgotten about. It’s weird because I had remembered the BTR ‘Game Over’ scene with the sprites in Primordial Soup but had no idea there was a version of it on the DVD. Presumably the digger Robert gets so excited about on the commentary:
