Just spotted this on my usual check of the site…

    http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Red-Dwarf-Back-to-Earth/12224

Back in April we passed along the BBC’s heads-up that Red Dwarf – Back to Earth – a 21st Anniversary 3-part reunion – would be coming to DVD “before the year ends“. This morning BBC Video and distributor Warner Home Video have announced that this title is coming out on October 6th, in both standard DVD and high defintion [sic] Blu-ray Disc.

finally a Blu-ray release date, must admit i’m tempted to hold of getting the dvd release and go straight to Blu-ray instead.

But you won’t get a DVD that looks like the one in the show!

Why wouldn’t they? I’m sure they’ll use the same design, just with added Blu-Ray on the front.

Can you have Blu-Ray in the same style, I have only ever seen boxsets in the slip case style, all other releases are in normal blue cases.

Dark Knight was in a cardboard slip case, as is Valkyrie, and quite a few others.

From the outside it would look the same.

seems there’s no problem then. just you that once blu-ray discs comes out the dvd will go from ?13 to ?6 in matter of days…of course if it goes down in a sale might get it then.

God, I hope the Blu-Ray release doesn’t have that god awful blue border around the cover.

Will be getting the Blu as long as it’s region free, which all previous BBC Warner releases have been so far.

Isn’t that packaging a mandatory part of the Blu-Ray spec?

Not on boxsets, I don’t know about regular releases.

I’d guess so, but it doesn’t mean it wont be scrapped when they realise that reinforcing the brand isn’t worth ruining DVD covers. Or when it’s thought that people don’t need to be cock slapped round the face in order to be aware that Blu-Ray exists.

Or that no-one wants to buy Blu-ray.

VERY rough mock-up, but I guess the blue border BR edition might look something like this…

    I actually really like that.

They should put Blu-Midget instead of Blu-ray disc on the top.

I’m still holding out for the triangular VHS release, myself.

I actually prefer the HD-DVD format, which only lost cause of the money Sony pumped into it and the number of companies it had exclusive rights to.

I’ve watched a few things like Planet Earth in both formats, and HD-DVD looks much better. Shame really…
