Comic-Con Prague 2025 has just released a video recording of a panel discussion with Red Dwarf co-writer Rob Grant and the most handsome man on board, Danny John-Jules.

Rob Grant, who as one half of the Grant Naylor duo was responsible for the birth of the entire phenomenon and co-authored successful novels such as Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life, reminisced about the golden era of the series during the panel. He was joined by Danny John-Jules, whose character Cat — a creature evolved from Lister’s pregnant cat Frankenstein over three million years — is one of the most iconic elements of the British sci-fi sitcom.

The recording is now available in English with Czech subtitles, so you can fully enjoy stories about how the Emmy Award-winning series was actually filmed.

You can reminisce about this giant of space humor here – cctalks.cz/grant

It’s paywalled, but it costs less than a pint of beer ;)

I was at that panel myself and it was great. At the panel, they show Rob and Danny the April Fool’s montage I created that year that got Danny to show up at the Moto GP in costume later that year.

Kocour means The Cat, btw ;)

I think Bobby could have got away with generalising both Kryten and Robocop as robots, rather than having to justify Kryten also being a cyborg with that specific line in D.N.A. If that’s what he was explaining to Peter Weller, no wonder he seemed a little baffled.

Robert also met his Czech voice actor, Zdeněk Dušek (the Czech voice of Kryten). As Robert himself noted, they are like twins who were separated at birth. The panel was very touching and extremely funny. Robert Llewellyn does not speak Czech, and Zdeněk Dušek does not speak English. In any case, they agreed that Robert would one day adapt one of Zdeněk’s films or series into English.

They both have the same sense of humor, so they complemented each other perfectly despite the language barrier.

    He’s not Cybo-Cop.

Trpaslicon 2026 is taking place this weekend, from March
27th to March 29th, at ZŠ Květnového vítězství in Prague. This fan-run
festival is dedicated to British humor, sci-fi, and fantasy, and while
it does not feature the original British actors or creators, it hosts a
variety of prominent Czech guests. These guests include the series’
Czech dubbing actors, such as Kamil Halbich (Rimmer), Martin Sobotka (Lister) and Zdeněk Dušek (Kryten), as well
as the dubbing director Janoš Vaculík and book translators. Although
named after Red Dwarf, the event covers a wide range of other British
comedy series through its “Britcom” line and features other authors like
Terry Pratchett. This year’s edition will also feature a special
remembrance of Red Dwarf co-creator Rob Grant, who passed away in early
2026. For those interested in learning more about the festival’s
atmosphere, an English report from last year is available to read.

Truly impressive to have booked him over a decade after his passing.

This weekend, Trpaslicon 2026 took place. We are still getting together, but at least I can share with you photos of the contestants in the traditional costume competition inspired by Red Dwarf, Terry Pratchett, or other British creations.

Rachel the fornicator, Samuel the chicken-stealer and baby Jesus

    Mr. Lister and Mrs. Lister

    Rimmer with Holovirus

Rimmer with Holovirus, Jesus and Judas

    Jesus, Judas and the Bag

Riviera Kid, Jake Buchar and The Chattering Order of St Beryl from Good Omens

The Chattering Order of St Beryl from Good Omens, Rimmer and Mister Staniol

    Lister of Smeg

    Riviera Kid

Which one is your favorite? :) I was on the jury (sitting at the table in the middle), and it was really hard to decide!

Lister of Smeg is far too attractive for a sci-fi convention. He wouldn’t need a chastity cheat.

He can be a lookalike for Lister from Red Dwarf USA.

They are the parents of Jesus of Caesarea, from the episode Lemons. Samuel has the stolen chickens hidden under his cloak, as you can see in the photo.

In fact, he was leaving the costume competition in the company of the newly married Mrs. Lister, and I heard he used the chastitycheat!

Eh, maybe I’m suffering from computer senility. Now I found out that this scene is actually there. But it’s true that some scenes are not included in the Czech version. Mainly because only the remastered version was broadcast in our country.
