Very cool, hope you all have a great time!

Interesting to learn that, if the internet is being honest with me, the Czech name for The Cat is the specific word for a male cat rather than just the word for the species.

Interesting they should choose to change the spelling of Kryten and Cat’s entire name

it suggests they don’t see Cat as a name or a proper noun, and just a description. Which I would argue within the show isn’t the case (with the exception of “he hasn’t got a name, we just call him Cat” … well then that is his name. He always wear a belt buckle with it on, suggesting Cat himself recognises it as his identity

No, I don’t think it suggests they don’t see Cat as a name or proper noun at all. It’s just about how he got the name to begin with. He wasn’t deliberately named The Cat as a specifically English moniker (similar to how Jeremy Corbyn – who woz robbed by the way – had a cat called El Gato), it was purely descriptive. They call him Cat because he’s a cat, and he’s too self-absorbed to think he needs any other name. It would be pretty bizarre to have The End wholly in the Czech language, but for Lister to randomly use the English word “cat” unprompted.

Like imagine if this is how it went in the original version:

Screenshot from the Red Dwarf episode The EndScreenshot from the Red Dwarf episode The EndScreenshot from the Red Dwarf episode The End

And then for the rest of the show he was known as “Die Katze”.

Honestly I didn’t actually know about this when I posted my last reply, I was just hedging my bets because El Gato became known 15 years ago and cats don’t live that long. So it was like “I don’t know if he still has him, but he did at least have him for a while”.

We all assume that the Cat will have a similar life span to Lister, but the oldest domestic cat only lived to be 38, and that was itself a huge exception.

How old was the Cat Priest exactly?

I think I need to clarify a few things here :)

Kryten is called Kryton in czech republic, for pronunciation reasons and better inflection.

Cat is called “Kocour” which is the generic name for a male cat. All cats as a species are called “Kočka”, but the male is called “Kocour” and the female is called “Kočka” :). So yes, “Kocour” is name of the Cat in czech translation. I don’t know why that doesn’t make sense to you? :)

Trpaslicon 2025: Confidence, Paranoia and lots of great experiences! 🚀

Trpaslicon celebrated its 22nd anniversary this year, and in the spirit of the Confidence and Paranoia episode, we walked the fine line between absolute elation and a mild existential crisis all weekend – but in exactly the right Dwarf style!

    Great guests and legendary voices

This year we welcomed dubbing legends of the Czech version of Red Dwarf – Martin Sobotka (Lister), Kamil Halbich (Rimmer), Zdeněk Dušek (Kryten), director Janos Vaculík and dubber Zuzana Skalicka (Loretta). Meeting them was one of the highlights of the con and brought a lot of great stories and improvised dubbing performances!

Stats that would make even Holly happy

There were approximately 480 attendees at Trpaslicon this year, including:
    👾 367 visitors
    🛠 51 organizers
🎙 58 guests (speakers, dubbers, special guests)
👶 And several future child-sized fans!

A programme full of British humour, sci-fi and nostalgia

This year Trpaslicon offered a rich programme, with Red Dwarf, Britcom, sci-fi & fantasy, Doctor Who, as well as workshops, competitions and themed games. In the sci-fi line, we commemorated 10 years since Terry Pratchett’s passing, remembered his legacy and re-immersed ourselves in his fantastic world.

Mask competition and VIP evening with dubbers

Saturday night traditionally culminated in a mask competition, featuring incredibly creative costumes inspired by Red Dwarf, Discworld and other iconic figures of British culture. This was followed by a meet and greet with the voice actors, who once again proved that their voices simply belong with the Red Dwarf crew.

Buffet at Pirate Luigi’s: How was your Vindaloo?

No Trpaslicon would be complete without the legendary Buffet at Pirate Luigi’s, where visitors could enjoy Gazpacho, Chicken Vindaloo and other space delicacies. If Vindaloo has “toasted your palate a bit”, consider it part of the experience! 😄

Atmosphere full of Confidence and Paranoia

This year, we went all out with the themed decorations, which, in the spirit of the Confidence and Paranoia episode, gave the con just the right vibe – so everyone could feel either totally awesome or totally depressed. But the main thing is that we had a great time together!

💡 We are already looking forward to Trpaslicon 2026!

The voice actors of the Czech version of Red Dwarf received photos signed by the actors as a gift from the organizers during the main VIP evening

On the left, Martin Sobotka (Czech voice of David Lister), in the middle, Zdeněk Dušek (Czech voice of Kryten), on the right, Kamil Halbich (Czech voice of Arnold Rimmer). They were very happy with the signatures.

Zdeněk Dušek is very sad that Robert Llewellyn will not come to Comic Con Prague, but he still hopes that they will meet one day. Robert was supposed to come, but in the end he canceled his participation. Danny John Jules will arrive instead.

Radio Prague International report from Trpaslicon 2025

Cult British science fiction comedy series Red Dwarf has a surprisingly large number of fans in the Czech Republic. Trpaslicon – adapted from the Czech name for the show, Červený trpaslík – is an annual Prague festival that has been running since 2003 and which celebrates not only Red Dwarf but all things Britcom and Brit sci-fi. Dominik Jůn went to visit.

🚀 We know Lister as a space wanderer, but Craig Charles can also get the crowd dancing as a DJ! 🕺

We went to Brighton to see his show, and we believe it will be worth it – great music, incredible atmosphere and a good dose of funk! Have you ever experienced Craig live as a DJ?

I can´t believe totally forgot to share our crazy memories of Comic-Con Prague 2025 with you. This Happened in April 2025.

I went to Comic Con Prague together with Zammpera and other members of our local fandom. This year, Danny John Jules and Rob Grant were guests at Comic Con!

We headed to Danny John Jules first for an autograph session. We had a gift bag set up for him (similar to the one Craig Charles got from us). The bag contained a Trpaslicon T-shirt, a Trpaslicon Jojo, a Trpaslicon pen, and lots of other odds and ends. Danny greeted us with a huge smile – he immediately started unpacking the gift bag. When he pulled out the yo-yo, he beamed, “Aaah, shiny little thingy!” And when he found the shirt, he immediately wanted to change into it. He was wearing “Red Dwarf” in Spanish and saying, “Come take a picture of me putting on the shirt!”

So that’s what made this amazing photo.

He started asking our names and immediately remembered that the first time he was in Prague, filming Blade, there were Bára and Eva in the crew. And when he found out my name is Bára and that the girl behind us was called Eva, he organised a group photo. He promised to send me the photo right away, but you know Danny :)

Danny was also intrigued by the black London Jets t-shirt I had just worn and asked if we could get one for him too. Because all the gifts we just gave him weren’t enough :) The whole organising machine started to spin – we sorted out our tiny warehouse and handover via the main organiser of the Trpaslicon – Vehali. We only sell our merch at Trpaslicon (that’s why it’s so exclusive), and during the year things are very carefully stored (its somewhere in the boxes in someones grandma basement).

Me and Zamppera had a panel about the red dwarf this year too.

Right after we held a small gathering of Red Dwarf fans in costume

In the meantime, we ran into Rob Grant, who was admiring the fans wearing red dwarf clothes – especially our sweatshirt with the Red Dwarf logo (in Czech)! He asked us if we could get him one too. Meanwhile, Danny was telling everyone on any occasion that he would get a black London Jets t-shirt from us. 😄

At Danny and Rob’s panel there was an AI picture of the Red Dwarf crew in the Czech Republic projected – part of our April Fool’s joke, we made earlier that month. We wrote a short story on our Facebook page that the next Red Dwarf episode would take place in the Czech Republic and that filming was already planned. A lot of people actually believed it. Danny immediately started looking for that dress and Rob already had an idea in mind for the next Red Dwarf adventure in the Czech Republic.

On Saturday, we met up with Rob and Danny again for an autograph session and panel. Rob’s panel brought lots of news, behind the scenes stories and speculation about the future of Dwarf. I shared with the audience my theory that Rimmer is actually an alien because he was born on the moon Io. Rob looked at me with wide eyes and then said: “I never thought of that! I’ll have to work that out!” 😄
Rob also mentioned that he would like to continue working on the Titan project, but lacks funding.

After the panel, we caught Rob as he was leaving – we wanted to give him a contact for the promised sweatshirt. Instead of a business card, he reached into his wife’s bag and gave us a Red Dwarf embroidered beanie. “There are only five hats like this in the world – and one is yours now!”

We caught another glimpse of him at the Komarovo bookstore booth, where he was spontaneously signing the Red Dwarf omnibus. We discussed how to give him the gifts, and through the bookstore and Rob’s assistant, we finalized the delivery of a t-shirt for Danny and a sweatshirt for Rob. We packed the signed books in the bookstore with the fandom flyers we had previously had made.

During the afternoon we went to Vehali’s, who gave us T-shirts and a sweatshirt. And then we went back to the ComicCon. We handed everything over – and we couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Later, Danny posted a video of his trip home – and guess what he was wearing? Yeah. A black London Jets T-shirt. ❤️🚀

Danny John-Jules visited MotoGP in Brno in the Czech Republic and decided to contact the representative of the Czech Red Dwarf fandom – me.

At the Prague Comic Con in April, he saw our April Fool’s Day collage, where he was in a Moravian costume, and promised that the next time he comes to the Czech Republic, he will actually wear the costume (and dance). Three months have passed and he has kept his promise.

The article is so extensive that it is currently only in Czech.

It was crazy project but it was worth anything.

Is the “Slovenian Database” menu called that because the word for “Slovenian” is similar to the word for “dictionary”, or is there a cultural steretype about Slovenians being good with facts?

Haha, it’s actually a quote from Red Dwarf episode Demons and Angels.

In the original it is this sentence of Holly:
“Rude alert!  Rude alert!  An electrical fire has knocked out my voice recognition unicycle! Many Wurlitzers are missing from my database!”

The Czech version then reads like this:
“Větroplach! Větroplach! Elektrický zkrat vypnul můj bicykl vyjadřování. V mé databázi teď chybí spousta Slovinců. Opusťte lov!”
It should be “slov” (word) there, so they changed it to “Slovinců” :)

So yeah, “Databáze slovinců” is basically “Word database” aka dictionary :)

It’s a great pity that Smega Drive doesn’t support diacritics.

What are the differences, what are the localizations in the Czech Republic, etc. I have English transcripts of scripts 1-52 and Czech transcripts of scripts 1-73 (I miss the Promised Land). Does anyone have English scripts 53-74? :) Thanks for the help!

Rob himself mentioned that he really likes the Rick and Morty stories. If Red Dwarf Titan were animated, it could be in a similar style. Thanks to that, he could realize ideas that he couldn’t before.

Unfortunately, in April this year he also mentioned that he do not have enough funds to create.

    Memories of Trpaslicon 2003

The first Trpaslicon, subtitled „The First Universal,“ took place from February 14 to 16, 2003, and started a tradition that has become legendary over the years. Originally a modest gathering of fans of British humor, science fiction, and fantasy, it attracted just over 120 visitors to the Květnového vítězství Elementary School, Czech republic and laid the foundations for the festival we love today.

The first Trpaslicon was rated as a successful „small con,“ where there were almost no hiccups and the atmosphere was extremely relaxed. As the main organizer Kohy concluded at the time: „The event went smoothly, no deaths or injuries, no losses reported. See you next year!“.
