Whilst searching for something earlier, it occurred to me there must a Dave Gorman-esque game in trying to find words that produce only one hit on the SmegaDrive.

    Anyone up for playing?

Nearest I came (without going down the obvious “celebrity names” route) was two scenes with ‘Medium’.

The more common the word, the more surprising it would be. Based on this list, “web” is supposedly the 71st most common word in English, but only occurs as part of other words in the show (Norweb, webbed).

…Which makes it 0 instances rather than 1, so doesn’t count, and I might as well have not bothered with the research and just said znhmibgfmb.

There should be a Smega-Drive premium mode which removes the cap on search results. Then we can find out which words occur the most times (excluding pronouns, articles and connecting words).

“Multiply” appears twice if you count it appearing within “multiplying”:

    But “multiplying” only appears once:

I’d bet “sandwich” would be up there, if you include derivatives.

Not a Smeglewhack, but just wanted to share that the first three results for “penis” almost form a narrative.

Give us a dictionary and we look up penis and swear words. It’s good to see how we’ve matured from primary school.

“Epicure” appears in Salt – An Epicure’s Delight and in Out of Time.

“Higgledy-piggledy” appears in Balance of Power and… Out of Time.

“Miranda” occurs three times, while “Iranian” and “piranhas” only once.

Critically it’s never the same Miranda.

Ionian nerve grip as well, if that counts. More directly “why on Io would they have food?” in Rimmerworld.

I was trying to find a good WW2 quote that I could edit with a Dunkirk reference, and I found that the words “retreat” and “liberate” only appear in the scene below. It’s surprising “retreat” isn’t used more, given Rimmer’s combination of cowardice and fondness for military strategy:

Also, this is the only use of the words “manhood” and “platter”:

So two Smeglewhacks, then. I just wonder whether it’s possible to beat two in the same caption. I’ve only managed it with made-up words:

Now here is one. Does clitoris count or not? In Polymorph it is only evoked in acronym form, while it is mentioned as a proper word in Timewave.

    Therefore…

“Circumcision” is only directly referred to in the Dave era, while in the BBC series it was only mentioned as “a certain Jewish operation”. Also the only time Jewish is mentioned by name, though obviously not by concept.

And on the topic of an episode about both Jews and operations, “bunion” in Lemons (“plasters” is also mentioned for corns in Emohawk). “Insemination” only appears in Polymorph as well, though is obviously referenced in Psirens and Ouroboros (“gamete” only appearing there).
